An option to disable the popup in the user preferences would be very appreciated and a proactive solution to the concerns of many of the users on your site.

I wouldn't even mind an unobtrusive banner with the same information, but a popup message is very obnoxious!

quite frankly this "enhancement" gets on my nerves more and more with every passing day. Good job to whoever birthed this brain child. When traffic slows, I hope you're also genius enough to make the obvious correlation. Ugly and (should be) embarrassing.

OK, maybe we can't get SO to get rid of this, but is someone at least working on making it function properly?

I noticed two other people in this topic getting the "9 friends"-thing. Does this mean this glitch only affects the three of us and that it DOES work for everybody else?

Same, mine shows as 9 friends and I have none on these boards.

Not a big fan of this pop-up, or any pop-up for that matter.

Pop-ups just plain suck.

Just let us turn it off by choice.
Is that too hard to code??

SO will not re-code this anytime soon. I'd bet on it.

Not when he has the gushing praise of 30 of his closest sycophant cloister club members swooning with glee. They have his u2u on speed dial.

64 flags on this, and indeed... still all ignored.

Hereby i respectfully ask for the option of turning the welcome pop-up off.
The info in the pop-up is nice and interesting but i would prefer to be able to click on a link to see it and not every time i enter the site.
And i feel the same about the new messages pop-up.

It would be nice if every one could set their own preferences of how and when it will be displayed.

Tanks and respect.

Pretty sad, as ATS is IMHO becoming much like real life and we are not allowed a choice in what happens. I am no longer allowed to ignore people, especially frakheds who's only purpose is to piss people off. I am not even allowed to skip posts from my foes, er, rivals, as there is no warning when they post yet I get to see all my friends posts. What good is it to have the friends/rivals if you are unable to see who your rivals are?

Now this. 60 some flags, way more than the thirty emails received, five pages with only one person saying they like this pop-up, yet nothing. We still have to deal with this idiotic pop-up that no one likes.

ATS is still a good site but the features that have been forced on us or forcibly taken away really butter my toast. I ain't a leaving because of it but I will bitch and complain every chance I get. Maybe, someone will listen.

All these changes and the best features are either gone or radically changed into something useless or annoying. Whatever. I should go pee in the wind as my words will have about as much impact as that act.

Well I'm newly joined, been lurking for some time, and I must say that I too don't like the pop-up. Would be nice to have the disable option. Thanks

Adding my name to the chorus. I hate it and it gets annoying with each passing day. Please continue to flag this thread to express your displeasure - we need as many flags as we can get!

This was an item that was one of the most requested features prior to the ATS 2010 Launch.

Is it really too much trouble to simply click on where it says close?

I haven't finished reading the entire thread, so someone may have already asked this and it may have been answered, but I felt it necessary to be perhaps another voice querying the obvious...

Requested by who? What were the statistical methods used to analyze and demonstrate the popularity of the request? How were the original so-called requests worded or was it a generic form that people clicked radio buttons for? Is the administration of this domain/website/limited liability corporation willing to publicize these reports and demographics? Is the supermods response (which I am responding to) rational or emotively reactionary (as it does sound a bit condescending)?

To answer the supermods question, it isn't much trouble, but just as annoying as any other pop-up ad. Particularly when folks (like me) end up having to close that little pop-up over 300 times per week. It should be an option, not a requirement for membership. There is absolutely nothing on that pop-up that is at all useful to me.

Please forgive me if I seem snotty or snippy or condescending at all, as that is not my intention either. I'm simply asking, and attempting to be as respectful as I can. Again...absolutely NO disrespect intended with any of these questions or statements. Just my honest questions and opinion.

Thanks for everything else you all do.
edit on 26-11-2010 by Control because: Please note that the questions themselves should also be viewed as an expression of opinion as well as a query. And an apology in advance if anyone took offense to the questions, opinion or perception of tone and intent.

Agreed with the pop up frustration

PLEASE STOP THE POP UPS

They are not necessary, and just interrupt my time at ats. UGH ENOUGH ALREADY!

My life is already full of enough pop ups

Harm None
Peace

I do not care for it either.

I know it is easy enough to click the "Close" button but an on/off would seem almost as easy.

Just added a flag. That now makes 70 flags. I would like the ability to disable it. I find myself spending less and less time on the site. It is becoming too much hard work for less and less reward.

It's tacky!

I also dislike the welcome popup. IMO its just an ignorance tool for new ATS users so they can find their way around. For us users who have been here for 2+ years its really annoying. Although I DO appreciate the mail popups seeing as how the previous mail alert before you upgraded never ever worked. But please atleast give us the option to disable it. It really serves me no purpose.

I think it is ridiculous that we have to private message anybody to maybe get a response. I for one will refuse to. I run a forum and don't expect people to email before I take them seriously.

Flagging this topic is far more democratic and allows us to see the real feeling amongst ATS users.

And maybe no-one complained earlier because we are mostly a patient bunch, and it took about 30 visits to get annoying. As i visit the site about 10 times a day. Its getting really old around about now.

71 flags and counting ........

It's all an unneeded push for "socializing" the site. I can see how a few might find it interesting to know exactly what their friends are posting, but this isn't facebook and I don't really see the absolute need for it. I wish they'd give us ATS members a little more options as to what we see, alerts that are given us via U2U's and the likes.

If you have to push more socialization, why not do what facebook did? Make a little icon with a little counter at the top of the page showing you recent activity from your buds?

Something like this I whipped up in Photoshop:
[atsimg]http://files.abovetopsecret.com/images/member/4131878467f5.png[/atsimg]
*Note the member is fictitious.

A lot less intrusive then the current welcome back popup.

My 0.2 of course.

I agree, becoming VERY annoying, I searched for a few minutes the other night through the MY ATS and TOOLS options but couldn't find any way to shut it off.

Combined with the increased amount of superfluous and whiny threads on ATS lately, this might be the straw that breaks the camel's back for me as a user.

Today I was thinking about how ATS has, actually, changed my thought process on a number of things. It was here that I learned to rethink 'gravity', for instance. It may well have been one of those junctures that, had it not happened (thanks nme), then I may never in my life had stumbled on it. I am getting away from the net, but still spend a disproportionate amount of time here.

But, yes, the pop ups are a waste of twenty or more seconds from every hour, not good. All of us are mortal with limited time. I feel strongly enough about it to agree with this post. The quality, too, is getting quite thin and sort of mainstream. It's as if someone handed out a bunch of cell phones, like in the early days of thought modulation, and everyone had to call whoever and blurt out any and every stray thought. Still, this site is among the best place to integrate coming news, however, and to be fair...there are scads of threads I cannot read about because they imply an imminent tossing of our slimeball government, and maybe much more.... I am thinking of the threads that expose the termite activity of those working on bills that make growing your own food illegal, and others. They want us ON THE GRID, and on THEIR terms, period. It's like they already spent the money they are eyeballing. Disheartening.
