Hello,
Let me introduce myself... and explain why i, like many of you am drawn to this site.
My name is Carl i am nearly 31 (13th Nov) and live in York (guy fawkes birth place) in the UK

Let me start at the begining..
My school reports always used to read "Carl has the ability to become whatever he desires" but when i left school after been a bit of a bad lad, where i was more interested in girls than educating myself i found myself becoming a father at 16, and like many i had no direction and little ambition and ended up wasting much time smoking the green! Eventually i found some determination to prove myself and become a good dad and for reasons i still can not remember i found myself walking into the recruitment centre and signing up! this was in 97!
In the last few weeks before leaving to join her majesty's finest i remember having my first premonition ( was still smoking weed at this point ) but i clearly made a statement to my friends that in a few years that i thought i would be on the hunt for Sadam! How close to the truth this was i would not to realise until a few years later!!

I progressed well in the forces and found a trade i excelled in! I become a combat communications engineer and was fortunate enough to achieve one of the higher pay scales and rapidly got promoted twice within three years. With my trade i was often moving and takin up new posts all over the world and i was constantly getting great recomendations from my piers, my work would often involve been the first into "the battle" making sure comms were set up before the troops rolled in!
Before Sep 11th i was stationed in Cyprus and although it would be unwise of me to say exactly what we were doing needless to say that Cyprus is a good listening base for the middle east. Anyhow for those who remember there was a big excersise in the desert, cant remember for the life of me its name but it was a huge gathering of many parts of the forces but a great oportunity to train in the desert!!! ( first coincidence of what was to come ) Secondly been based in Cyprus at the time all the Army personnell used to wear desert combats! and we were ordered to hand them back in and were issued green combats! all this before september the eleventh.
So when people ask, yeah i think what happened was pre-meditated and planned and that 9-11 was known about long in advance! this gave those who be an excuse to enter the middle east to achieve there long term plans.
Anyway to cut a long story short and try and hold your attention a little longer, i did become involved in the hunt for Sadam altough not too directly, i was involved in many parts of what was op telic and would love to divulge my stories but by this point i was working for a part of the armed forces who like to keep there stories to themselves! for now at least. I went on to further conflicts including Afghanistan and carried on doing my job to the best of my abilities and in turn kept getting great recomendations from those who matter.
So this brings me to the last part..
Finaly I ended up working in the UK in counter terrorism for a part of the government that is little known about, this got me out of the uniform and into civies and needless to say my hair grew long! It was this work and the insight into how little we actually know about that really started to make me think! I was involved in things and privi to information that i really would be in danger if divulged. And the truth is i didnt like it! I hated keeping secrets and even more so hated not knowing what else! Eventually i left the forces and became a fully fledged civillian again only this time a more suspicious and paranoid one!

I have many stories i would love to tell and maybe i will eventually get the courage to do so! Been a so called expert in comms i have made it at present very difficult for anyone to trace my I.P address and locate me so i may chose to do so in the future, but i do remember the stern and severe face of the officer in charge when i signed that officiall secrets act!

My appologies if this is a little random but this is a small explanation of why in my oppinion i have got to this point and am searching like the rest of you in this suspicious community.

Thanks

Welcome to ATS Carl.

Make yourself at home, plenty to see and do here. If you get stuck, just shout, theres plenty of people that have been here a while who will help, or there are the staff of course.

Interesting background you have there, there are a few others here who are ex-forces too. Some will talk about stuff, some won't.....but those who "can't talk about it", generally don't.

Have fun.

Again my appologies for the slight randomness but maybe just testing the water at the min! I do have some interesting stories to tell but at the moment i prefer to hear others stories! I have my oppinions however and always willing to share that and hope i can bring something interesting to the table.

Thanks again zaelot

I was hoping and not too suprised to find other ex-forces on here! I think that between them/us there are many stories to tell some that would really shock and upset those who are a little ignorent or unaware, not sure i am ready to take the lead just yet though.

Thx for the kind welcome

No probs.

Here you will find ex members of the armed forces and serving members too, from all over the globe. Their opinions are sometimes welcomed, sometimes less so. There are members here that are not overly keen on the armed forces or the actions carried out by them, but you will learn to accept everyones right to an opinion.

I'm not saying its always easy lol, but people can be passionate about their beliefs here.

What i have found though, is that you have a broad range of military experience here. From the younger ones that are thinking about joining up, to the older ones that really have been there, done it and probably seen more than you or i will ever see in our lifetimes, they are all here.

Thats where a kind of mutual respect happens, or at least i like to think so. We all like to tell stories, but sometimes there is no need. You just give little grin and "know".

I think in the current world climate, its good to have the input of ex and serving military here on ATS, as long as they remember that the forums are a level playing field. Soldiers are not better than civvies, and vice versa. We all tend to learn a lot off of each other here.

Anyway sorry for the ramble, like i said, enjoy your stay and i look forward to seeing you around.

CX.

Again thanks for your help and direction!

My initiall introduction i honestly wanted to give some understanding of where i have come from and how i have got here!
I realise that some people have a negative view of those who have served or are serving but i think that there is a need to share our experiances ! Its how we learn and adapt, and i am all for that these days, and more so than ever am i ready to accept and listen to others opinions.

Hope to see you around this sight

Welcome! Your background sounds very interesting, can't wait to hear more!

When you had to sign the secret act as you stated above, and got that stern look, what did he tell you? Was it something like "we know where u live" or "welcome, now keep your trap shut"? Lol

Or was it just oddly quiet as they watch and waited for you to sign?

Just curious, welcome again!

Always good to have another ex forces troopie on here....
I find that they generally have a more grounded view of whats really going on "over there".wherever that is........
I hope youll find this as warm and friendly a place to hang your avatar as any out there....
I have been here for long enough to know that there is truely a meeting of minds going on here....and who can say where that will lead?
welcome!
