It is a very complex subject but in the simplest terms there are tectonic earthquakes - ones caused by the movement of the plates, and volcanic
earthquakes caused by - yes volcanoes or rather the magma moving under the volcano and coming up splitting the ground as it goes. This is not the same
as tremors which are harmonic frequencies caused when magma moves along conduits.
I definitely agree with muzzy, this is nothing at all. After all when Baja California was running wild there were well in excess of 600 earthquakes a
day just in the one place. Same with Yellowstone when that is having a swarm.
Can it be the most minimal movement of the plates?....Or is there a required measurement?
Yes, and what do you mean by required measurement? The distance can be from millimetres to many metres when a fault line gives. The amount of movement
and the type of rock determines the intensity of the shaking (Mercali scale) and the wave produced gives the strength of the quake in one of several
scales but usually
Richter ML or
Moment of magnitude Mw, or body wave magnitude Mb.
