Besides you would not send hundreds of ships down into the atmosphere of a world that YOU KNOW to be populated, WHO YOU KNOW posses weapons of mass destruction and just expect everything to be fine and dandy. You would only do this if you had the upper hand and could defeat their weapons with ease.

It would seem to me to be more plausable that one of our own space crafts returns to earth with some sort of carbon munching self replicated spore that ends up destroying all life as we know it on the planet. Then little green men in shiny ufos invading the skies over our cities.

But it's a difference when someone Expects they to really be hostile than using their human natur mechanism.

I would pull out a weapon then gun some of em down

I would then be the first offical recorded person in history to kick off an alien war with earth and probly the last or if we win get praise for grabin us some new tech

For this act of prosperity i would recieve

Aliens gone - inherit some new space systems + Free cool tech = Noble peace prize (cos we would be united in destroyin every other alien species) + Scientific award for harvesting tech to advance us



nah not really i would start selling them crap like time shairs and cheap items that would break when they get back home

Well then does anyone's opinion of what to do change if there were the case....

It's about 8pm..prime time TV, you sit on the couch munching cheetos and watching Reno911, on comedy central. Suddenly the screen goes black and the TV speakers set off an alarm.

This is an alarm by the emergency broadcast system: In 5 minutes the President will make a special and life altering address to the nation. Please tune in to a local station for this address.

You usualy don't watch those things but this one seems to carry a more sense of urgency.. and the fact that it is spontanious is a little unsettling. Switching to a local station you see a zoomed in Presidensial Seal on the screen, at the bottom of the screen are the words, "Please stand by."

Soon enough the screen comes alive, the President is harried and wide eyed. His hands are trembling and he clears his throut three time before finaly speaking. "My fellow americans, this morning the government of every nation on earth recieved a communication of intelligent alien origin. The message was short and clear, they have asked we gather our leaders, or representatives and appear at the U.N. in two days for a formal meeting with the them. We ask that you stay calm and stay clear of the U.N. building. Any personal aircraft flying near the U.N. will be escorted out, and pilot arrested, any aircraft that does not compley will be shot down. You have two days to gather with friends or family if you wish. The day of the meeting, marshal law will be in effect in NYC, citizens are asked to stay inside their homes. We have not yet decided if the meeting will be televised live, we will keep the american people up to date through your local news network, over the next two days. Thank you and please stay calm.

As for me I stick to my orignial plan..outlined above. Still seems like the safest bet.

well,

the neighborhood gets pretty dangerous a few bl;ocks from my house, so I'd actually be worried about rioting. The aliens might be friendly (which would be implied by 'warning' us of their arrival before doing so), but that doesn't mean that some moron won't decide to use this as an excuse to loot or 'screw the Man'.

But... now that I think about it... if we received a message ahead of time, I think the President would deploy the national guard AHEAD of his anouncement as a way to deter rioting.

So... in a way, we might be able to guess when this is about to happen if we see certain things, like

1.A sudden, unplanned deployment of the national guard
2.A situation where the president's schedule suddenly changes
3.radio and television systems are told to expect a presidential address at a certain time
4.World leaders suddenly change their plans or head to a specific destination.
5.Soldiers/national guard are deployed to critical industrial/resource sites.
6.Trains/aircraft are grounded/kept in the station.

i think they might make slight covert moves before the announcement.. but not deployment or anything they would hope people might notice...

it would be my opinion people would panic more if the army deployed before the announcement.. or even feel threatened or attacked.. deployment after the announcement most people would realize it was protection.

Ideally...

they would want to time such a disclosure with an event that could 'cover' for the preparations (like say that we were going to condition red because of a terrorist threat... then, when all of the equipment is ready to move out, make the revelation).

true enough.. with an added apology for the "neccessary" deception..
i did not think of that, but that would probably be high on the option list.. if the situation were ever really considered.

you know it occurs to me that we here probaly give the government some really great ideas ... lol

Think about this: What if the space people used some high-tech to get our bodies "froze" so we could not move at all only look and hear but not talk, they landed and walked in peace lokking at us then they walked back to their spacecrafts an dissapeard. and the "frozen" was gone what would the peoples reaction be then (joust some fast fantasy thoughts)
Well it would be difficoult to show them selfes for all frozen people thoe.

If ships appeared ala "V" or "Independence Day", I think I'd likely gather my loved ones and drive straight for nearby McDill AFB, hoping to be vaporized rather quickly, rather than be like those in "To Serve Man"....

If they appeared all over like that, it wouldn't mean they are here to just say "hi"...that's strategic positioning, and means nothing good will come of it......

While I admit that appearing enforce would be suspicious I can't say I would immediaty think they were going to attack.

Being advanced I'd assume they could destroy us from space.

There was a show called Babylon 5 about a space station. Humans were almost wiped out because we accidenly killed members on their Holy council, abourd a craft we encountered in space. As a sign of peace they "opened their gun ports", and we, taking that as an aggressive act, fired.

Anyway they called off the attack, but by that time we were nearly extinct. It seems they found we shared a "soul" or DNA with them.. and they did not want to commit genocide against a relative.

Anywho my point is they are aliens and they will have different customs.

I can't help but recal "Mars Attack"

We releassed a Dove, the sign of peace and they blew us to bits. We kept thinking we made some unknown aggressive act.. and continued to try to make peaceful cotact.. and they continued to blow them to bits... then finaly we realized they just liked blowing us to bits!!

First off, any phone calls that you would want to make would have to be from land lines. I know every New Year's and all day on 9/11, all the cell phone networks were busy.

Second, I don't live in NYC, but I live very nearby, and I have to say I was very surprised by people's reactions on 9/11 and the day of the blackout. After seeing what I did during times of confusion and bewilderment, I would assume that MOST people would remain pretty calm. I don't think most people would be thinking, "HOLY SH1T!!! We are all gunna die!!! I have to get water, and weapons, and..." blah, blah, blah. A lot of phone calls, people stoping what they are doing, and either going out to the streets or clued to their TV's, but not a lot of panicing. That's just my opinion though.

As for me, I'd probally sit in my basement, glue myself to the TV, and get plastered. If they are peaceful, I'll be hammered,in a good mood, and ready to party. If not, hopefully I'll be passed out when they attack.
