Just wanted to say I totally do this too, regarding the newbies!

I usually only do it if the person said what I was thinking of saying better than I could.

As I now have the "You are an experienced contributor to ATS. Please be an example for our newer members and make every post matter," statement on my POST page, I guess I'll have to leave more than a one-liner.

I usually star a post if it looks like a lot of thought has been put into it or if it makes me laugh.
Sometimes I will give a star if the post is so full of crazy that it transcends crazy and moves into the void of ultra bizarre mind bendingly awesome

I ain't no ''star whore'' !

The majority of posts do not fall into the categories I listed above, and I was always under the impression that there's a limitation on the number that you can give per day, so I don't hand them out like confetti...

Come on now... I believe you would star nobodys post if you could...
We wont make fun of you or look down, just admit it..

I rarely tell anyone I starred them, though, as in the star and flag for you, sir syndrome. I don't understand why people do that either.

Back when WATS was around, we had I think 3 WATS a month.. So it was common to see "I gave you my last WATS" or "I wish I had another WATS" because we had to use them sparingly..

This new star flag thing kinda sucks I believe.. Like most people pointed out here they give them away like nobodys business, or they dont give them away at all(me).

I think if we went to the old system it would be alot better, because we would have to actually put thought into whos post we would give a WATS to..

WATS means Way Above Top Secret Award.

I think it was a good idea because we had quality posts then, most posts today suck in comparative to then.. Oh well get wit the times I suppose.

I agree with you. Oh and I didn't star you for it

I find the star system only serves to boost egos really, for both those giving and those receiving.

I mean, when someone makes a post - their second post in all entirety since joining the forums an hours before posting - and simply says "Hey I like your forums" and gets a star, promptly before being banned for being a spammer troll, it kinda says something about what they mean...

IE; very little...

Oh well... I'll just keep trying to star my own posts however, maybe one day I'll be able to

I tried to respond to everyone who's posts stood out to me, don't worry if I didn't respond personally to you though I read everyones post on this thread and they were all very wonderful:

I don't star everyone I see unless I'm in a particulary stellar mood.People that take the time to post on my threads almost always get stars. Sadly, I don't recall the WATS system, I've only been a member since 07, and have been off and on, so I'm guessing it was before this time? After checking my profile though it appears I have 3 WATS left. Which I am giving to you for taking all the time to post your replies. Thanks again.

I hand out sympathy stars too especially for when members are getting teased by other members. I almost always give the person a star to make them feel a little better about their idea. Its a pat on the back type of gesture. Reassurance.

I too star people that have stated what I was about to say! This happens a lot actually. Its fascinating.

Your posts describes my star craze brilliantly! I go on star binges too, sometimes depending on the persons post count, they can last hours. I often wonder if the person notices that their stars are being abnormally inflated...

reply to post by Atlasastro

That is soo hilarious! Total art of war going on there. I may have to try that out sometime...

Your reply was soo different! Thanks for taking the time to post. I never thought of the star system like that at all. But I am positive a lot of us have experienced something similiar to what you stated. Thanks again for posting.

reply to post by FlyersFan

I find that fascinating. I believe another member earlier on in this thread had hinted at what you stated also. I also find it fascinating because before reading your reply I noticed how close you were to 15000. Quite an accomplishment.

reply to post by JustMike

Yes I totally am in agreement on every tenth star being a different color like you mentioned. It would certainly look neat
I too star people who let a human side show through their posts. I starred quite a few people on this thread for that very reason alone.

reply to post by SquirrelNutz

People who post things of brilliance or profound points of view always get starred by me too.
Especially if they say something that really makes me step back and think. Or if it is something that is completely enlightening.

reply to post by Davespanners

Your post is brilliance! I love starring the posts I see in various threads that are completely out there. Full of crazy, as you put it. I often find that through the crazy, there is usually a hint of ingenuity. So those people always get starred by me.

reply to post by Ladyinwaiting

Your post stood out to me! I do the exact same thing! And not just to round a post off from 99 to 100 either. I often find myself compelled to boost star counts if someone is close to a major milestone. Such as 9891, I usually find myself starring all their pasts posts to help them reach 10000. I often wonder if they ever notice.

Hii thanks for replying! I definitely think they boost egos also. For both parties as you said. I do prefer the giving stars covertly though. Especially if I'm making it a point to star all of someones past posts to raise their star count. Covertly is the best, it makes me wonder if they ever notice

Thanks again for replying.

I hardly ever give out the S&F memo either! Mostly because I am more conservative with flag giving and very liberal with handing out stars. Thank you for all your replies

It is very sad that people don't give stars to very informative post like "Ok.. Second line".

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my thread. Regardless of the context of your post, just the fact that you took the time to read and respond deserves a star in my opinion. Thanks again

Being a relative newbie to posting on ATS I use stars to reward posts that have really made me think, have substance or are generally well presented. I haven't awarded stars to people with nice avatar's although I have contemplated it.

Using the greatest of reverse psychology techniques you must not star this post at all

Nice to hear how people use the scheme tho - have a star on me :p

I star when someone presents an opinion backed by facts - I do not have to agree with their point of view, but believe they deserve a star because they are contributing to the post and they are able to support their point of view which gives everyone a glimpse of the big picture.Like you I sometimes go on star spree's and other times I do not bother to star.

I must admit I am probably more likely to star a post that supports my view, but I try to keep it fair.

My two reasons are -

1) When it's an ovbviously thought-out post, especially when displaying wit and intelligence.

2) When it's obvious it is NOT a star / flag farming thread / post. I hate these subjects that people post up just because they know it will give them flags or stars galore. It's just too obvious.

I star things that people say that need to be read by the world at large. If someone makes an important point, I star it, so that more people might read it.

Because 'Flags' are BS

i come across a 'Flag' worthy thread as often as i find Hens' Teeth...............few & far between

youse guys are waaaaaay to liberal with the Flags... i guess because your not savvy
as to the merit and import of the meaning of a 'FLAG'...

the 'Flag' is not a STAR... the FLAG tells everyone else the text/content/ is of a thought provoking
nature...and is a TEXT BOOK worthy entry...to be considered as a mind altering compostition
and causing a mild-to-radical change of world-view

these glib threads with 99+ stars & flags... gives the site a GLP character, which is of no good to anyone!

oh...hell with it.... i think i'll start giving Flags tooo...
since i've been stingy all the way up to now... awarding less than [6 Flags] on the plus 7 thousand
posts i've made---over the 6 years i've (as St Udio) been active--- but reading more than 10k threads==

too bad i can't sour the polls with multiple Flags...as the system actually deserves

thanks for the Star...oh unknown star awarder... the whole series of pages will soon look like the night-time canopy of Stars in our northern hemisphere pretty soon --- Yahoo !

well to me this thread is good because it give members some idea of what other members appreciate, and may help make this place better than it already is. i don't know about anybody else but i appreciate knowing what people think about posts and what they appreciate and do not appreciate, it helps to improve the content, well i think so anyway.
