A big part of (urban) survival when things go sour is blending in or standing out when the situation calls for it.

Sporting a big camo bagpack in the city is in my opinion a bad idea. You might as well walk around with a sign saying "I have all types of usefull gear, come and get it!". If you are hiding out in the woods, a big bright orange backpack might cause problems as well.

My simple solution to this problem are two rucksack / backpack covers, wich gives you three different looks (and it's waterproof). You can ofcourse carry more covers depending on your needs or surroundings but you might want to reserve space for other usefull things.

Let me give you a example of how i am intending to use it;
Plain grey backpack: Urban surroundings
Woodland camo cover: Woods
Orange cover: For when i want people to see me

The same principle applies to clothes, keep a set of plain normal clothes and some camo clothes in your B.O.B.
Situations can change very quickly and if you can adapt you might live longer.

So that's my quick little tip, i hope it might be usefull.
Any other ideas on how to blend in would be very welcome!

I was actually thinking about this 2 days ago. I planned on having a set or 2 or regular clothes, camo, winter clothes, and night time appropriate clothing just in case. Be prepared for whatever you can. S&F... Good post. I would say maybe a small makeup compact with various shades of color to change appearance if needed.. fake scars, bruises, etc.. pair of scissors if a quick haircut is needed. Beanie or hat, bandana..for warmth/cooling or to hide hair.

If someone is going to steal your bag I don't really think that they are going to care what colour it is, just how full it looks

You might be able to conceal yourself from humans but the dog packs will know where you are and when the shtf
dog packs will be a serious danger.

Indeed, there is little you can do against a dog tracking you. My idea is just a lightweight solution to humans spotting you.

Hahahahahahahaha!!!!
That is awesome . I was being serious though. Some Halloween makeup and you can make yourself look injured or whatnot if your in public and trying to look different etc. The Military uses "makeup" to blend in with surroundings.

As far as night time colors dark blues are better then black.

B.O.T. is hilarious.. oh man.

Dogs will be a problem as their meat is kinda chewy.
I have often thought about having a fake "official" uniform with me in my B.O.B. - search and rescue or some other civilian group that is often given access to disaster sites. It might allow you to pass through undisturbed.

Those of you with BOTs and BOBs need to think about weight and bulk, is it really worth having those items taking up room better given to water/food/fuel/etc? Perhaps if you are walking out of the city, a bicycle to hang your BOBs on would be better? a bag each side of the cross bar, 2 rear panniers, plus a small back pack with the real essential
items in it in case you have to run. ( for shelter, until you get your weapon out)

Here is a serious question. I am thinking of getting one of the toddler hiking packs that have the seat for the little one to ride in. Its gonna lessen what I can carry however I wont have to tie my arms up with holding a kiddo, anybody else with little ones what are you gonna do with them?

I figure one of these www.csnbaby.com... with a roll type pack under it would probably do ok.

Anyone elses thoughts? I would bug in and intend on doing so for a couple of days or till i see how crazy it is, because I live in the middle of a larger city, but eventully your gonna have to go somewhere.

If the S has HTF and you are ANYWHERE with a backpack I'm going to assume you have supplies, clothing, and/or food in there. It makes no difference to me what color it is. The best camouflage for your backpack is not to be seen with one (or more).

dave, thank ya. i was gonna post the same thing... when you have to "bug out" the color won't matter.. if someone sees you with a full ruck sack, they're after it, no matter whether it's grey, black, camo or fuscha... ya beat me to the punch.

Actually there is alot you can do to escape dog tracking ! If you know you are been tracked that is !

1 simple avoidance tip would be to tie plastic carrier bags round your feet ! once you get relatively far away discard these bags then tie a fresh set again round your feet ! do this two or three times during your escape! also if you can then travelling through water as much as possible ! again discarding and changing clothes can throw off a scent. Circling round and making fake tracks also helps ! there are many techniques to throwing tracking dogs off scent !

the problem is, any pack is a flag...

the only decent camoflauge is to be seen with it on a regular basis. so it's nothing out of the ordinary. like i do..

i live in a "larger small city", population about 200,000, give or take. i've always worn military surplus clothing, as it lasts longer and i've had to buy my own clothes since i was about 15. so, it only made sense to buy stuff that would last "forever". m-65 field jackets, alice packs and boots.

also i don't own a car, so, i walk everywhere. when i go to the grocery store, i take my alice, drop it off at the service desk, then pack my stuff in it when i head home, by doing this i reinforce two ideas in the minds of passersby,

1) it;s absolutely normal. it's not unusual to see me, with an old military bag full of stuff.. it's just the way it is. an everyday occurence draws know attention.

2) that i have nothing. in todays society, if you have no car, and always carry backpacks, you're generally seen as extremely poor, or homeless, when the SHTF, the people i have to worry about already think i can't afford supplies, or valuables, so i'm less likely to have problems.

granted, this isn't a perfect plan, if i have to "get it and go", there are always gonna be problems. my concern is more of making it out of the city than anything.. once i hit the woods, i'm good.

so, imo, if you're looking for a better camo, wear your pack alot in public. try not to buy a brand new pack as the "shiney-ness" will draw attention... an old, dirty bag, whether just a backpack, or military surplus is better than a new one. ya night even think about doing something like poking a few holes in it, lacing a shoe string or boot lace through it, makes it look older and in worse shape, plus... never know when you might need an extra lace...

this goes for your bug out clothes as well, in my opinion, wearing all camo will draw too much attention to you. when the SHTF, the last thing ya wanna do is look like some gung ho army nut. but then, the above also apllies, if the people in your area are use to seeing you in camo, then fine. if not.. prolly not a good idea to be decked out in full military gear.
your bug out clothes also, should be comfortable, look worn, and foremost, "in place". the more out of the ordinary your gear looks for your area, the more attention you draw.

ATTENTION + SHTF = BAD

but, that's just me..

Good info but useless to me since I'll be hoofing it with my own pack. Pretty hard to convince them to wear baggies on their feet.
My pack could handle a decent size pack with a bit of help from me. They'll be looking to take out the alpha and the beta (again, with my help and at my direction) and all the others will scatter. I hope it never comes to that, though. It'd break my heart to lose one of my own and I don't relish sewing up a dog without anesthetics. Super glue would work on skin tears, deeper rips would be a problem. Antibiotics are another issue. I have a good supply of oral antibiotics but I'd better be picking up some injectible penicillin.
