The US and UK are investigating the extent of a terror threat after explosive material was found in packages on two cargo planes bound for the US from Yemen on Friday. The two packages - one found in the UK, the other in Dubai - were addressed to Jewish synagogues in the Chicago area. President Barack Obama said the devices were a "credible terrorist threat".

Sorry I couldn't see this anywhere.... apologies if I have duplicated.

I don't understand why a body as 'intelligent' as AQ would bother with this method of attack..... All packages are scanned so bound to be found.... What is this distracting us all from?

It's a diversion from the elections. It keeps stories of voter fraud off the front pages. Look at the right hand while the left hand does the work.

I read it wrong. Read the timeline at the bottom. They saw a suspect item, placed the area on lock down, lifted lock down, found a second device and put lock down back in place. Read it people. The packages were caught in DUBAI. They never made it into the US. Yet, we're taking credit for vigilance. What a joke.

Well one of the packages made it all the way to the UK before it was found, and the article seems to suggest that they were only found after a tip off from the Saudi secret services.
Looks like the security on cargo flights isn't actually very good if thats the case.

There doesn't seem to be any word on if the packages contained actual bombs i.e. something that was set to explore or just explosives

Okay, here's the skinny.

UPS failed to catch it in the first staging, but caught it in the UK upon a second screening.

FedEx caught it at the source and nothing ever made it on a plane.

Passenger flight 201 is escorted in by fighter jets.

Nothing made it into the US. The scrambling and such once the plane reached here were just a precaution. Can you explain to me why it seems our officials are taking credit for anything here?

It sounds to me like they don't want a private company taking credit for foiling a terrorist ploy! So they have to down play their efforts by having a passenger flight escorted to land in grandeur fashion.

To 'wag the dog' means to purposely divert attention from what would otherwise be of greater importance, to something else of lesser significance. By doing so, the lesser-significant event is catapulted into the limelight, drowning proper attention to what was originally the more important issue.

Perfect timing!

After watching the BBC 1 news this morning, they have comfirmed that the device in the U.K is definately an explosive device.

Sky News have also speculated and I quote "It has all the hallmarks of Al-Qaeda". A credible news channel shouldn't say things like this without 100% proof.

OP has a source with the confirmation and the words linked to Al-Qaeda

I will try to find the quote that I have used...found it here: Sky News HD

Here is another article talking about dry-runs (scare-mongering?): BBC News UK

The article is pretty muddy on that point but I think it's saying that the package found in the UK was put on the UPS plane in Dubai.
Judging from the picture with "flight path" - "intended flight path"
Thats how I'm reading it anyway, it could be clearer though.

I don't know what happened to BBC journalism, the article is pretty confusing on the details

Yeah I know, it took me a while to figure out what was actually going on. The timeline they give was a tad confusing, but I think I got it sorted out in my previous post now.

All indications show that all packages were caught before they even got across the Atlantic. One in Dubai by FedEx and one in the UK by UPS. The passenger jet from Yemen had "a package from Yemen" on board. Big shocker there. But then again they have to say a package from Yemen made it in to confuse people as to whether or not an explosive device made it into US airspace.

And I agree, just because an explosive uses one chemical make up doesn't mean you can go off and say where it came from. It's like a nuke being dropped on Russia and automatically thinking it was the US that did it.

This is the part that interested me the most:

The two packages - one found in the UK, the other in Dubai - were addressed to Jewish synagogues in the Chicago area

Now why would they allow the press to say that?

Even if it was true, I'd expect that to be covered up...

There seems to be afew topics kicking around in the last few days alone, that are aimed at destruction/deaths/fear:

1. BP's new logo to Beyond Petroleum.
2. Creation of SYNTHIA gnome.
3. 8 countries (and still rising) hit with the NDM-1 SuperBug.
4. 2 explosives found with speculation of a dry-run.

Definately turning up the fear dial...what else are they trying to distract us from??

Isn't it something when you realise that news like this makes people around you gasp and jump about and then you realise that you are sitting there scratching your head muttering... "So.... what is this REALLY about then?" and trying to see past the bull to whats behind.

People I know are like "What the funk Yzzy.... what hidden agenda? What diversion?"

LOL .... I can't even remember what it was like to be so trusting of the MSM.... if I ever was! I was knocking on doors at 13 years old asking my neighbours in a whiney teen voice "Do you know about CND?" and handing out leaflets...

How are some people so accepting?

I thought everyone might like and agree with this.

Instead of a news conference, giving whoever made the devices unwarranted attention, how about this?

Statement that should have been released:
----------------
The threat we faced on Oct. 29, 2010 was a minimal one. It does not deserve to be made into an event of any significant importance. Therefore, we will only be releasing a statement at this time.

Upon a second level inspection at East Midland Airport in the UK early Friday morning, UPS security measures were tripped revealing a suspicious device later revealed to be an explosive device sent from Yemen to an undisclosed location inside the US.

A few hours later FedEx in Dubai also confiscated a suspicious device postmarked to the same location.

As a precautionary measure, we escorted Emirates Flight 201 to JFK airport where extra care was taken to determine if the flight posed any risk. It was determined after the flight landed that it posed no threat. We also on a federal level checked the cargo of two FedEx planes that had packages from that region and that too was deemed to pose no threat.

We have no clues yet as to whom created these devices. They are made from materials that are readily available to anyone with enough conviction to search them out.

The main message here is that it was caught early. I want to personally thank all those involved in the detection of these packages for their diligence and commitment. It truly shows a united global front against extremism violence.

-----------------

Does that not sound like something that SHOULD have been said? Because that's what happened.

Nice statement!

The BBC news is making a real meal out of this story today. Theres been more or less no other news featured since I woke up at 7am just a constant repetition of the same scaremongering with very few actual facts

100% fart so that is a terror act outside with people around, thats as silly as grown people on tv talking about this rubbish.

Oh yep america is being attacked, have you people not seen the size of america.

Why do people fear terrorism, when people in gov and police are far bigger dangers to there lifes in very real ways, lol.

I say again, the size of america, why would you worry about terrorism, what are the chances someone will die in america of a terror act?

I say again police and gov fact are more danger to your lifes than any person across the globe. This is like the star wars thing where the ewoks attack the evil empire, lol. What a joke that is.

No one is out to attack americans, the biggest dangers you have in your life is gov and police, and thats a fact.

I find it laughable that this occurs just two days after the British Airways boss called for a reduction in draconian security measures for flights to the U.S. .

Coincidence? I think not..

Too much coverage for a minor incident

I wonder if this will have any repercussions on International mail delivery..
I fear there might be some serious price increases ahead in the name of security maybe restrictions on what can be sent by airmail.

Yeah, I was thinking of the same thing especially with Christmas comming.

My advice would to be wary of presants with a Yemen postmark!
