Everyone must be sleeping, because I'm not seeing too many comments yet regarding Krakatoa. This is some scary stuff. For every volcano near Toba that goes off...it gets a bit more nerve-wracking.

TRIBUNNEWS.COM, JAKARTA - The tourists who want to make a trip to see the beauty of Mount Anak Krakatau activity is recommended so as not to fall to the ground to close. The recommended safe distance is 2 kilometers from the volcano of Anak Krakatau. "Tourists are not banned, just as long as the waters are advised not to go down to the ground. A safe distance about 2 miles," said Officer Observation Post Mount Anak Krakatau, Anton when contacted by phone on Saturday (10/30/2010).

According to Anton conditions around the area of Anak Krakatau volcano is still considered safe. In fact, continued Anton himself, also allow the community who want to see wisps of smoke from the volcano activity of Anak Krakatau. "In fact, it took a good look at the picture of Anak Krakatau volcano smoke," he said.

As known earlier, the alert status given to the eight volcanoes in Indonesia. That is, the status of the eight mountain hazards are located on level two.

Alert status of Mount Anak Krakatau has been embedded since October 31, 2009 and the last four days, the number of eruptions over 100 times. (*)

Is that good or bad news? Does this mean its quite normal to see activity at this volcano. This is probably why the msm hasn't bothered reporting it.

This thread has got me riveted.

Nothing at all on msm about Krakatoa erupting. I've just been channel-hopping and it's like it hasn't happened.

Y'know, if it weren't for threads like this and the other 'What's Going On In ...' threads we would never know anything like this was/is happening.

I don't usually contribute to these threads because my knowledge of volcanoes is a fraction above zero - all I know is they blow up sometimes.

Many thanks to the OP and others for bringing this type of 'proper' news to our attention

Happy Halloween!!!

Please note last sentence in John Search report.

Sunday 31st October 2010
Merapi Volcano, Indonesia
Eruptions continue at Merapi volcano, Indonesia. People have been asked to remain in evacuation centres, and flights may be disrupted from Adisucipto International Airport Yogyakarta. Volcanic activity is still high with 38 lava avalanches occurring between midnight and 3 pm yesterday. An eruption column reached 3 km above the summit. Pyroclastic flows extended down the south, southwest , and western slopes of the volcano, with a maximum runout distance of 7 km. Ashfall was reported 20 km from the volcano. At 00:50 hr yesterday there was an explosion at the summit of Merapi which affected a radius of 2 km from the volcano. The explosion earthquake was felt by people at Srumbung village, 12 km from the volcano. At 0:35 hr yesterday there was a large pyroclastic flow recorded which lasted for 22 minutes, and flowed in the direction of K. Gendol, K. Kuning, K. Krasak, and K. Boyong. At 0:16 hours yesterday a pyroclastic flow lasted 7 minutes and flowed towards K. Lamat, K. Senowo, and K. Krasak. The Center of Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation in Indonesia reports that a major eruption is possible.

Well on doing a little searching on Anak Krakatau I found out that there has been activity there since April 2008.

The most recent eruption began in April 2008, when hot gases, rocks, and lava were released. Scientists monitoring the volcano have warned people to stay out of a 3 km zone around the island. There are several videos of Krakatoa uploaded onto YouTube showing recent footage of it erupting, and inside its crater filmed at the edge of the volcano rim.

Found Info Here

‘Mt Anak Krakatau’s eruptions record tremendous increase’ is the headline at Indonesia’s Antara news agency, on a lengthy story reporting a rise in the numbers of earthquakes and ‘small eruptions’ at the volcano, which is in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Sumatra and Java:

There's actually been activity there prior to 2008. I posted this in another thread but I'll place it here too.

On December 29, 1927, a group of Javanese fisherman who were startled by steam and debris bleching from the sea above the collapsed caldera, thus marking the reawakening of Krakatau after 44 years of calm. The activity continued, and on January 26, 1928 the rim of a basaltic scoria cone first appeared above sealevel. A year later, it had grown into a small island which was quickly dubbed Anak ("Child of") Krakatau. Anak Krakatau has erupted in most years since. Typically, these are rather mild strombolian to vulcanian eruptions of basaltic andesite lava flows and associated tephra deposits. Although they present little danger to surrounding islands, the eruptions from Anak Krakatau provide a constant reminder of the horror of 1883 - Lest we forget.

More specifically, from a post by JustMike in the aforementioned thread are dates of previous eruptions.

TrueAmerican,

thank you very much for clarifying the Toba situation. I hope no-one took it as if I meant that there were harmonic tremors at Toba. In my own post, I said:

I'm also disturbed by the news from "True American" that there are possible harmonic tremors at Toba. [...] I'm sure that we'd all appreciate any update info from the research that's being done on this right now -- or even a new thread devoted to it if that's the better way to get the analyses into members' hands.

I specifically said possible harmonic tremors, because I respect your knowledge and you'd said (on page 1 of this thread):

I have been receiving some, what I regard to be, "unusual" signals from a station that sits on Lake Toba. PuterMan and I are working on it to try and identify them. I suspect that they may be Harmonic Tremors, but there is so much going on on the island of Sumatra, including another close volcano showing activity, that it is extremely difficult to pin these signals as coming from any particular source.

Forgive me if I have misunderstood you or unwittingly misled our members. I took "may be" to mean "possible" but by no means did I consider it as meaning probable, let alone definite -- as you hadn't indicated that.

I am greatly relieved to know that you have now been able to exclude harmonic tremors as being responsible for the signals/traces from the Toba region that you've been studying.

Thank you and again my apologies if I've got things in a bit of a muddle.

Mike

It looks like Merapi has the potential for a very large eruption, and it sounds as if the authorities are starting to lean in that direction as far as warnings, etc.

I think that Krakatoa is a very active volcano, so it isn't at all suprising to see it join in. From the footage I have seen of it, I question whether it is one of the typical 'smaller' ones though, or larger than usuall. It is hard to determine that, based on reports. Until otherwise noted, I am going to assume it isn't out of the ordinary.

Having said that, while it may be ordinary, it is still one more volcano down there that is erupting along with the others and several more on raised alert status. My attention is on Toba...praying she remains silent.

Thank you all for contributing to this thread. I have been researching about this stuff for awhile now and its nice to know that other people see that things are going on that are not usual. Its not fear mongering to be informed and to be concerned about whats going on there. Toba is a very destructive and earth changing volcano that any activity that is anywhere close to it needs to be taken seriously because we don't know how the system down there works and how things are connected. Scientist can speculate but none of them can tell us for a 100% certainty that they know how it all works.

This is Mr. Lee here;

On Saturday November 20, 2010 between 4:30pm and 6:35pm Halemaumau crater at Hawaii Volcano's National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii will erupt with explosive force.

First sign:
1. Heavy rain fall at Halemaumau crater on Wednesday November 17, 2010.

2. Second sign on Thursday November 18, 2010 hundreds of small quakes will be registered at Halemaumau crater.

3.. Park Rangers will witness on Friday November 19, 2010 six rainbows on the Eastern Rim of Halemaumau crater.

4. On Saturday November 20 2010 the eruption will take place in the afternoon towards evening.

5. Halemaumau crater will fill up with lava and pour out by December to the East moving over the Saddle Road
heading towards the capital city on the Big Island of Hawaii known as Hilo.

6. This lava will strike Hilo by Decemder 25, 2010 unless the lava is stopped . Only one way "kuliana".

(This prediction made on Friday October 29, 2010 at 10:41;35 pm Hawaii time.)

Michael Kumukauoha Lee
Ewa Beach Oahu, Hawaii

No sorry Mr Lee, you cannot go changing your predictions just because they did not happen.

On another thread you applied all this to the two weeks at the end of October with the crater filling in November and the lava then running up hill to get over the ridge to go towards Hilo. You said there would be a large swarm in October before this happened. There was/is no swarm and there is no increased activity.

I suggest that since you cannot even be bothered to answer my questions you stick to informing congress about your predictions and leave the real work to the scientists.

Even if we allow you the leeway of changing your prediction once I for one certainly won't permit it again so if this latest round does not happen on time then you are Sir, as I suspect, a charlatan. Stick to seaweed and preserving the Hawaiian culture - you might be better at that.

Aside from that Mr Lee your revised prediction has nothing to do with the topic of this thread.

Bummer, those are seed files and I have not sorted out extracting those yet - but it is on the list to do.

I have the SEED file from PS.KSI for the 26th so I may have a go at it tomorrow circumstances permitting - you know what I mean.

Yeah, I wanted to ask you about SEED files, and if you planned to implement them in QuakeData. Vase or GEE won't read them either, so I got JRDseed- but for some reason it won't boot- I have a hunch it's because of GEE running with like a zillion stations loaded.
They are both Java heavy programs...

GEE will take SAC, mSEED and PNC files, but not SEED.

And as to Krakatau- you nailed it- it's the child playing- Daddy's home, but still asleep. The Aussies around here better get some earplugs- just in case.

JustMike- yeah man, no biggie- I updated my first reply about Toba, and you probably just missed the ETA.
I am getting better about not totally freaking out prematurely- cause HT's at Toba- and yeah- it's time to FREAK!!!!

Puterman, I was just able to listen to the sound files. They are awesome!!
It sounds like an ongoing thunder storm with the rumbling never ending. I wonder if this is the grinding that I envision is going on here
. Then there is the whistling as we have heard in some of the yellowstone recordings - I wonder that is the magma chamber or if it is a common occurance? You listen to these all the time - What is your thinking on the sound we are hearing??

Only news I'm finding for today on the volcanoes in Indonesia is John Search

Tuesday 2nd November 2010
Merapi Volcano, Indonesia
Activity has increased at Merapi volcano, Indonesia. Between 06:00 hr and midday today earthquakes increased, and there were 8 pyroclastic flows with a maximum runout distance of 3.5 km. Emissions reached a height of 700 m above the summit. Merapi remains at the highest alert level 4. A 10 km exclusion zone remains in place around the volcano.

I found this on another Thread and thought it fit better here - thanks for the post megestyk7 - hope you don't mind I used it too.

By SLAMET RIYADI, Associated Press Slamet Riyadi, Associated Press – Mon Nov 1, 9:12 pm ET
MOUNT MERAPI, Indonesia – Deafening explosions of hot gas rattled evacuees miles (kilometers) from an Indonesian volcano Monday, the latest eruption in a deadly week. The country reported increased rumblings at 21 other active volcanoes, raising questions about what's causing the uptick along some of the world's most volatile fault lines.
