The U.S. Debt

ok, so I was talking to some friends the other day and we started talking about the trillions of dollars in debt our country is in. All i have is one question about this debt. How are we paying it off? Does our goverment make a monthly payment to these countries? I don't understand why our debt even matters now. That amount of money doesn't even exsist how are we supposed to pay it off? Any info on this is greatly appreciated.

Other then that I believe it is impossible. The Federal Reserve is happy where it is at because the deeper the US goes into debt the more wealth they accumulate.
