Will Google's Online Operating System Revolutionize the Computer

www.foxnews.com

That big old hard drive in your computer? Google says you don’t need it anymore. The company is also betting you won't need that Windows, Macintosh or Linux stuff either. No, Google wants you to access, operate, and edit all your files on the Internet.

To help with that, the company has developed a lightweight operating system of its own, the first new competition for Windows and Macs in years. It's called Chrome OS. And it could have a profound effect on the way we work with computers.

You won't be able to put it on your current PC. But Google wants it to power your NEXT computer.

Great just what we need google knowing everything!!! As if they didn't already. How many people honestly think they won't use this to their advantage? And what about the times your away from the net? Even in this modern time the internet is not yet everywhere. Big brother has got to be loving this news release.

Interesting prospect but seems like it is in the wrong hands. Google already has enough privacy issues with giving away personal information, why would I trust them with all of my files?

Google has continually proven themselves so irresponsible that no even remotely intelligent person could ever trust them with any personal information, let alone power their OS.

That being said, I am sure a large number of Americans will embrace this idea.

Making your computer like a terminal... sounds like going back to the 80's with this. This is not something new, 30 years ago computers used to be a simple keyboard and a screen and all storage was in a vac. Now, it is called "cloud computing".

Computing is starting to look a lot like fashion, all with it's periodic trends.

Well wow. Interesting. ...I've always loved Google - changed my life, opened new worlds, multiple universes. Can't think they're bad guys.

But, also interesting:

a web-only desktop such as Chrome OS is only as good as the Internet apps it has access to.

...and not just apps. Why is this announcement coming out on the heels of COICA?

COICA law - say goodbye to internet freedom

I can tell I am going to get into quite a few interesting discussions on this site with people about technology. It seems like most ATSers immediately look at new technology with a leering distrust about how it can be used by big brother to control our brains and steal the souls of our children. I guess for sake of balance I will play the side of rationed optimist when it comes to technology.

This is the way information is going. I think in the next couple of years you will see the end of all storage media. Goodbye hard drives, disk drives, thumb drives, CD's, DvD's and Blu-Rays. You are all going the way of the record and cassette. As the bandwith available to the internet increases, ( and we are expected to be up to 100 TB in the next 5 years) it doesn't make sense economically or in terms of efficiency for everyone to buy all these different mediums of storage when we can have all the information in the world at our fingertips over the net.

Another place you can see this trend clearly is with Apples new Macbook Air. It doesn't have a disk drive and all the software for the computer will be downloadeable from an app store.

The problem is that cloud computing is something these people are pushing alot now. I always said google is run by the american military intelligence groups, and we can guess what that means.

On topic, the cloud computing concept may appeal to alot, as mostly tech as shown to be sold as a gimick to make life easier, when it really is just taking our freedoms away, having all our stuff on there computers.

These people probably ahve some visions of some cloud computing monoploly or something where none of us can access without them letting us.

I just wonder how home servers that ms are projecting, is going to work in this.

I would prefer a system in future where you have a home server each at home, but google seem to want it all cloud computing.

Im unsure if i should jump for joy about this or run and hide in the woods
Correct me if im wrong but didnt Google sell out to the NSA,CIA,FBI,Homeland Security for all the information connected to their browser content,Earth maps,Street view,Data bases,IP logs? Im not sure if i would trust enough to let them be my operating system.Remember Echelon People!

Well without a doubt in my mind they probably already have any info that they want, and can probably get any info that they want. I just prefer to make it harder for them rather than having it on one system with instant access? Perhaps I am flawed in my logic? I will be sticking with my linux either way!!!!

Call me crazy but google should should stay at what it's good at search engining. There is already products like carbonite that backs up all your files online but atleast you pay a fee and they know if they don't keep their customers safe they loose all business. Googles does not care about anyones safty anymore they are so wrapped up in the money power and fame business mostly power they have so much money and everyone knows google so if a company is only looking for more power please watch out..... I think i'll keep my harddrives and back them up IF I want to a trusted company that MUST keep me safe or risk loosing my business.Google cares about the customers? ahahahahahahahahahahahaha

I think it will completely change the way computers and operating systems are viewed, and while in the short term google may profit, ultimately it will not be in their favour, and will serve only to bring down Microsoft's stranglehold on PC OS's.

Firstly, out of any major operating system, Windows is the ONLY non-Unix system, at least all the others are largely inspired on it, ie GNU/Linux, BSD, MacOS, and even Google's ChromeOS, are all largely Unix inspired and based. There is a reason for this; Unix is very stable, and can be made to work on basically any platform.

Linux, and BSD to a lesser extent, is totally free, has all of the functionality of Windows and is just as easy to use; the problem is most people simply aren't aware that there are alternatives, or are scared of a new OS.

Google's Chrome will be a huge hit on netbooks and tablets, small computers that are internet-focused. It will get the word out, so to speak, that there are alternatives.

Excessive hardware on desktops will be largely under utilized, since everything is stored on google's servers. You will see a short term plummet in desktop prices as cheaper models are produced geared towards ChromeOS. Gamers, casual or hardcore, will be left out of the loop; they will at first stick with Windows, as it is by far the best supported by game makers.

But there will be many problems with these changes. Public network infrastructure, already under tremendous load from movie downloads, file sharing, HD content and just general excessive usage, will slow to a crawl with every action taking place in The Cloud; the practicality of the operating system itself will have slowed to a crawl.

But something will have changed for the better; people will see that there are other options, that there are other OS's available that are totally usable besides WinBlows.

The migration may be slow at first, but with time, as more and more make the leap to Open Source, software and game developers will follow, bringing with them the games and products that many people stick with Windows for. Google may well end up holding a stable footing in the portable, net-centric computer market; but this OS has no place in the standard desktop PC world, and will serve only to show the false monopoly that Microsoft has held despite continually producing half-baked outdated and incredibly overpriced software.

Problem with Linux (although I do love Linux and have my select few favorite distros.) is that there is no compatibility for Windows software (ya wine... it doesn't work that well does it.). This is fine if you are going to do standard computing stuff but what about the gamers?!

I honestly don't see this as getting very big. People have been praising the name of cloud computing for years, and still yet people are still on individual machines. If you notice in the source, the person claiming that this is the "future" is the owner of a cloud computing company. Of COURSE he wants it to be the future, it will make him rich.

One of the biggest issues with this system will be how under-powered it is. People use a lot of software on a daily basis that is OS-specific, and takes up quite a bit of resources. The article itself claims that there isn't any finance or accounting software for it yet. And Google Docs is kind of a joke compared to OpenOffice.

Another issue is privacy. I can almost guarantee you that there will be a EULA clause about how anything stored on Google servers are subject to their whim, and it's almost assured that anything they deem fit can be deleted/reported to the authorities at any time. That's to protect their own butts. And by using the software, you'd be giving them that right.

Will I be using this OS? Not a snowballs chance in baptist hell.

P.S. - It's Fox News, people. Just Sayin'.

This link is to a letter sent from former Microsoft chief software architect Ray Ozzie sent to Microsft, basically stating that the era of the PC is over.

Interesting read.

Google ChromeOS will open people up to the fact that there are other options. More and more standard desktop users who are non gamers or even some casual gamers will make the switch. Following them(go with the market) will be a slower shift of developers towards the growing linux market will develop games for it. The transition of developers may take some time, but if the market starts to shift that way, you can be sure game developers will follow.
