Just saw this over on Pop Sci's site:

Researchers at Fermilab are building a “holometer” so they can disprove everything you thought you knew about the universe. More specifically, they are trying to either prove or disprove the somewhat mind-bending notion that the third dimension doesn’t exist at all, and that the 3-D universe we think we live in is nothing more than a hologram.

Could it be? How is it even possible? If it all is just an illusion, then wouldn't the mechanism not be able to tell if it reality was actually real? This all pretty mind boggling stuff.

Hogan and his team are building a “holometer” to magnify spacetime and see if it is indeed as noisy as the math suggests it might be at higher resolution. In Fermilab’s largest laser lab, Hogan and company are putting together what they call a “holographic interferometer,” which – like a classic interferometer – will split laser beams and measure the difference in frequencies between the two identical beams.

Quite technical operation they have going on. Who is Fermilab funded by? Well looks like quite a few people and companies actually: www.fnal.gov...

unlike conventional interferometers, the holometer will measure for noise or interference in spacetime itself. It’s actually composed of two interferometers – built one atop the other – that produce data on the amount of interference or “holographic noise.” Since they are measuring the same volume of spacetime, they should show the same amount of correlated jitter in the fabric of the universe. It will produce the first direct experimental insight into the fundamental nature of space and time, and there’s no telling what researchers delving into that data might find out about the holographic nature of the universe.

I'd be more than interested to find out what data is revealed regarding the holographic nature of the universe. I imagine that once it is built and launched a good portion will be published a select few scientific journals. And a larger portion of the really interesting stuff kept hidden from the populace.

For any physicists out there here is the diagram blueprint:

Some info on Fermilab: Well for starters this Holometer project doesn't appear to be listed on their main site. And they are mainly a governmental institution under the Department of energy. A lot of insightful info on their facility can be found here: www.fnal.gov...

Pop sci source can be found here: www.popsci.com...

So what are your thoughts Ats?

Wonderful idea, and the Universe is a Hologram, I am excited to see that these scientists are out to prove it, to change how we view, well, EVERYTHING, but, I'm sad to say that it's not going to work.

They are treating the Origin point like it's in 2D, using X and Y (left and right), without the Z (high low).
They are treating the universe like it's a square, like the pixels are blocks, but in reality, they are spheres, our universe is spheroid, if you wish to frame a picture, then you must touch it on all sides, know what I mean?
They've got to get one light, one wavelength to shine in a total 360. They've got to get the right light, they have to test the entire known spectrum to see which wave, long or short, will reveal our illusive dimension.

If any one is wondering why they think this is possible watch this video. It is cartoon but really breaks it down. This experiment along says alot.

This is great

Shame we will never know the truth if it turns out its all a big hologram

Wouldn't they be able to design an enclosure utilizing a series of mirrors (possibly curved) to facilitate the needed 360 degrees?

I'm not much of a physicist but this was the first thing that popped into my mind.

If it is all a hologram, then I wonder what is outside of it? Perhaps there are multiple halograms? or Possibly even halograms within other halograms?

I'm sure they know what there doing. They are scientists utilising funding that will amount to millions. They're not going to ruin their reputations and risk losing funding/jobs.

More like billions,.. But yes I suppose you're right.

I haven't seen that movie yet! I have a pirated copy that I've been putting off watching. Will definitely be checking that out tonite!

you never know is right

Ya it is really mind blowing that the act of observing along is what makes a particle act different. In my opinion it is the ultimate question to find the answere for.

I wonder if two people observe, they both see it differently? Highly doubt it, but its quite the experiment they have going on. Can't wait to hear the unfiltered and edited results 20 years from now
Because we all know that whatever they find, won't be released in full at first...

it is possible, and they should make an enclosure full of mirrors, but do they know that? because their blueprints only show 4 curved mirrors, it won't work, 4 is not the number you're after.

Get your best thinking hat on then ! Inception utilises quiet a bit of brain power. Destroyed my perceivable reality for a good few hours after it finished lol

Would an enclosure of 1 singular 360 degree curved mirror work? I'm just curious more than anything.

Your post is also making me think that the blueprint they released to Pop Sci isn't the one they are using. Why sabotage their whole entire project by using an inadequate series of mirrors for the light? ...Makes me think they blatently aren't releasing the genuine design of it.

This sounds very interesting. I think we're living in exciting times. I wonder what crazy idea will be common knowledge in the next 20 years or so.

I couldn't agree more. I'm anxious to see 2020 (and beyond). I think there will be great advances in those 10 years.

Like some others here I'm not sure we'll get to know, not because we need to be deliberately deceived for monetary reasons but for sanity reason. Imagine now that they actually find a graininess to our space time that would be strong indication of something intermittently designed. We could be all living on a million year or more advanced holographic computer screen.

Anyhow the point is do we need to find out or not and if we do find evidence what will that do to our civilization.
