I have been on the low carb no sugar diet for years as i have a family history of diabetes.
It worked for years till i was hit by the auto immune disease sarcoidosis.

Sarcoidosis can hit any organ of the body and can include endocrine involvement.
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov...

Another problem is the treatment for sarcoidosis prednisone also can cause diabetes.

After the sarcoidosis started i went into metabolic syndrome and from there into diabetes.

My big problem is that between the sarcoidosis and the heart attack it caused i am unable to exercise other then walking a short distance.

most of my problem was caused by the doctors.
in april 2002 i started having severe body wide Muscle pain with cramping and sleep disturbance. the doctorrs would not give me anything for the pain.
in June of 2003 i was DXed with sarcoidosis.
and in Sept 2003 DXed with fibromyalgia. and still no treatment for the severe fibromyalgia pain. execpt anti depressants that did nothing for the pain.
in Dec 2005 was DXed with severe sleep apnea, still no treatment for pain.

in March 2006 i had the heart attack and 5 way by pass surgery. they finely gave me 30 days of vicodin for my recovery after i left the hospital.

April 2006 got my CPAP for sleep apnea.

Oct 2006 ask the doctor for ether vicodin of gabapentin for the fibromyalgia pain(i had got some bootleg gabapentin and found it worked for my pain.)

Jan 2007 was DXed with neurosarcoidosis and found out from the Rheumatologist that one of the many doctors back in 2003 listed on my records that my pain was not real and i was a drug seeker/user.(they never tested any of the many blood samples that they were taking for drug use just put the label on me and where i worked did drug testing and i always passed.)

So from 2002 till 2006 i had servere untreated pain that did not allow me to exercise that along with the heart attack caused by the lack of exercise and the metabolic syndrome caused my weight to go from 200 pounds of Muscle(i worked as a underground hard rock miner when this all started) to 280 pound and i lost most of the muscle.
I still am in pain to the level that i can not work or exercise and now have type 2??? diabetes.

And what do the doctors still tell me. That i need to get more exercise.

eating more meat and not excersizing will surely cure your diabetes.
after all, sugar is the culprit behind all of modern societys ills, it has nothing to do with meat.
nothing at all, meat has tons of protein and B17!

i weighed 253 pounds at 6'1", it is important that i get down to 200 lbs as quickly as possible,so i'm in a "fasting" mode. once down to 200, i will start eating whole grains, and small portions of fruit. all red meats have fat marbled in, no matter how lean they report to be. i get some fat from low-fat cottage cheese that i have during the day. i also eat about 2 to 3 ounces of peanut butter on a daily basis.
since i had 2 heart attacks when i was 38 years old, my fat intake is even more critical today, when it is combined with having diabetes 2.

So why are you avoiding fat?

And why are you eating so many carbohydrates when you have a carbohydrate intolerance. Would you drink more milk if you were lactose intolerant?

I saw this news come out last week and wondered if there was a ATS thread on it. I would've checked then but I had been admitted to the hospital with DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis). Spent one night in the Critical Care Unit then another night in a regular room.

It was one heck of a week! I didn't even know I was diabetic. As it turns out I'm one of the weird late on-set type 1's. Well atleast that's what their thinking. Will not know for sure until the antibody test comes back. But my doctor is thinking it's likely because I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis, another autoimmune disorder.

I had to go through carb counting survival training with my endocrinologist's dietitian yesterday. I was told to say low carb. I'm averaging about 40-50 a meal. Even with that, I'm running around the 200 mark. (plus I'm still hungry all the time!!!!)

As for type 1 or 2, I've been reading the past few days about the "hybrid" type 1.5 or LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults). This type is thought to be very rare, but I now know at least 2 people that would fall into this category.

Which brings me to a question. Besides obesity and ethnic groups, could this type of autoimmune diabetes be caused by environmental factors? We read all the time how pesticides and food modification can damage the body's systems, could this type of diabetes be the effect of such things? Is this new study part of a cover just to hide the fact we are slowly being poisoned?

That's horrible news. Good luck to you in managing it. This is one of the best resources I know of for diabetics: www.diabetes-book.com...

Adult onset type 1 diabetes isn't too common, but is becoming increasingly so. Type 1 was originally called juvenille diabetes because it was thought to only occur in adolescents.

It's great news to hear that your dietitian is recommending low carb; however, 200g a day is not a low-carb diet.

Besides obesity and ethnic groups, could this type of autoimmune diabetes be caused by environmental factors?

Great question, and one that warrants it's own thread in my opinion.

The obvious answer is yes. But to what extent? Viral infections in children are known to be causes of type 1 diabetes. Other than that, it's up in the air. I personally think that, based on observational evidence, dietary factors play the largest role, specifically, the effect that exessive carbohydrate consumption has on an unborn child. We do know for a fact that this type of act can cause a predisposition for a child to develop type 2 diabetes.
