Lol, the only MMORPG I ever played was FFXI, moneysellers ruined that game bigtime. If it was anything like that situation, than I doubt it was slander at all.

The clause went like this... paraphrased....

"All content, including characters and ingame items are the property of Blizzard."

Then after release Blizzard went out of their way to publish the banning of gold sellers.
Later they even took some to court. See it was recognized that one can't have
a fantasy environment, where people are free to act out their fantasies
if everything they say can-and-will be used in a court of law.

YouTube has started paying people for the content
of their channels. The fact that comments
are not disabled on the accounts
that are recieving payments
is entirely premeditated
by google. The old
YouTube was
immune.

THIS ... IS ... REPRESSION ... UNFOLDING ... BEFORE ... YOUR EYES.

"Rape, bodily injury, stalking, criminal harassment" All of which are already illegal without a new bully law....
How can you raise a kid not to be victim of those things? How about martial arts?
edit on 22-10-2010 by TKDRL because: (no reason given)

Oh yeah and rape.... he two males, 17 and 18, were charged with statutory rape. That is crap, Unless they actually raped her, as in forcing themselves upon her, that charge is crap. Unless the woman is like 30 yrs old, there is a whole double standard with this "law". I lost my virginity WILLINGLY at 13, to a 17 yr old girl, had I been the 17 yr old, and the girl the 13 yr old, I would have been toast if her parents found out.

How can you say that Bullying shouldn't be a legislative issue? It's been left in the hands of parent's before...has it gone anywhere?

For the most part, the bullying is not done by the majority of the kids out there. Parents need to raise their children with the proper values of respect. I know stories pop up about kids committing suicide, and it's really sad, but the government should not pass laws to protect us from the speech, thoughts and ideas of others. We should be free to say as we please, and use discretion accordingly. Children have little discretion and I refuse to let the lack of a child's discretion be the cause of my government dissolving the anonymity of free speech. Not limited speech, FREE speech.

It won't happen anyway. Google isn't obliged by law to hand over the IP addresses in question, BUT, considering the statement the Google CEOSchmidt made....

"The only way to manage this is true transparency and no anonymity. In a world of asynchronous threats, it is too dangerous for there not to be some way to identify you. We need a [verified] name service for people. Governments will demand it."

I imagine they'll either hand the IP addresses over willingly, or... they'll try to create a precedent by letting the issue of identifying the anonymous go to court.

Yes, but have you ever been the target of a long, repeated attempt to defame your REAL NAME?

Because that's what this woman was dealing with.

Would you not want someone of authority to step in if some anonymous guy was posting images and video of you, calling you names, etc?

Topix is a great example of that kind of speech, and there are already numerous cases in the courts of people being taken to task for slandering people online.

I cannot speak for anyone else here.

But I have been a target of long and repeated attempts to defame my real name, my career, and my honor.

It's called character assassination.

I went through it for six years and they were Hell because it was a Manager who I caught in a huge lie.

I was an employee of five years at the time and she was a brand new Manager.

By the end of the six years though she quit before she got fired due to my reputation outlasting her lies.

Personally, as I mentioned before I take down bullies, and I took her down because I went on the defensive.

She made a few fatals mistakes and screamed at employees in front of other employees, customers, and friends.

Why the people of America and elsewhere are so sue-happy is beyond me because I see courts as useless.

Unless it is for something actually relevant like, you know, an actual crime, not this namby-pamby nonsense.

I do not want someone taking on something I see as my business, either personal or business, in regards to bullies.

Let them attack me as they are usually too stupid to cause any real harm, anonymous or otherwise.

While I hate politics I learned office politics along the way and use them very easily.

I missed the part where they were trying to create a new bully law. I guess I'll have to go back and read that.

So in order for a kid to not be harassed they have to take a martial arts class? Hmm...So I suppose that means that (if the money was available for a parent to do so) these harassers shouldn't be charged for raping or stalking because things like martial arts is around? That doesn't make sense. Because my original point was that legislative should be involved because of how far these bullies go.

Which you are allowed to say how you feel about someone to their face, correct? But lies and opinions are different. Especially when you record these lies on the internet for the world to see. I agree parent's should raise their children to know better. But this isn't always the case which is where the government comes in. Giving your opinion about someone is different than harassment. Very different.

And sorry, you may have responded while I was adding another paragraph in there.

tell me, if someone was posting harrassing videos of your MOM, from the safety of anonymity, would you not want to law to step in and enforce the law?

The videos in question aren't even harassing. They just depict the girl this revolves around at some kind of training class.

If someone posted a video of my mom at a training class on youtube, and someone on youtube called her a whore, I would not care.

Lies and opinions are different. If lying is a crime we'd all be in jail. Harassing someone by lying about them just makes the liar look obsessed. And if it's anonymous lying, who is going to believe an anonymous comment on youtube? And as we boil it further down, the comment in question is "whore". That's a typical teenage youtube comment, nothing to sue over. Is it true the woman is a whore? Probably not. Is the video going viral with 1 million views? Probably not. I'm anti-bully, but I equate this issue as I equate the free market. You should be able to not sell to or hire blacks or mexicans or asians if you don't want to, but when word gets around about your practices, you'll be reaping your own harvest and people will not buy from you because of your racism.

Same concept here, most people see a harasser online and just write them off as a little kid, its not a huge issue.

Yes, but even that, could you imagine what would happen if her work found that? Her friends or family? A future employer? An adult woman being called a whore wouldn't look good to any of those people. But I did get a little off topic when it came to harassment and calling the woman a whore. I lost my point with my semi rant, sorry about that.

Absolutely agree, LS. Just because there is a system of communication called the internet, does not give one the right to utter libel, aspersions, and calumny which can include the destruction of lives, reputations and livelihoods. Also include personal humiliation and anguish.

I hope she wins this; gets him good, and it's a lesson for other like-minded pigs.

Why do you assume it was a male calling her a whore? I have seen way more girls ostracize other girls for being a whore, not many males will do that. That is my experience, that it is usually jealous females that toss that word around, males are usually happy to get sex where they can.

I could imagine. The friends and family would think to themselves, "How rude, that child leaving a comment like that about so-and-so. The parents need to pay more attention to what that kid is doing online. And where did that child get such a foul mind!"

The employer would probably not be on youtube investigating prospective hirees, but if he did find it, and had seen any other youtube video in his life, he'd probably say, "Typical youtube trolls."

I've enjoyed the thread, but I'm off of it now, leaving it for others to use.

Okay... Wow... I read that part about them trying to make the new cyber bullying law before..but for some reason that didn't stick. No I don't agree with them taking way this luxury of being anonymous, first of all they are obviously able to find someone who is anonymous and charge them easily. Second, We are a bit more protected being anonymous from other's who wish to harm other's by not having our names plastered everywhere. Wow...I understand where the rights thing comes in.
I'm kind of impressed with myself for holding up in a debate that long without actually knowing what was going on.

Internet should remain anonymous simply because they will use these kind of situations to implement laws.

Even though i think we are all being watched on the net. The net is the only thing we have that connects the entire world properly.

Like another member said, what will happen if a major company you talked bad about or insulted sues you?

Or if the Goverment accuses you of being a terrorist because you insulted them?

I think the bully thing is pathetic. There are so many pathetic people out there thats for sure.

Once these laws are made then you can say its the begining of the end for internet freedom.

Lets say im watching a video posted by someone on youtube, the video lets say is of a gang of nazis speaking about their ideology and i want to make a comment, a negative comment because i dont believe in those things, should my name be posted. Then should i worry about my life?

Keep the internet anonymous.
