Would it be a good idea to get rid of the points here on ATS? I ask this because of all the asteroid impact threads, prediction threads, etc. that are being well overplayed over and over again. Is this done so people can score points knowing that many people here on ATS will reply? How many separate post was there for the aussie bloke story?

I'm at fault for replying and posting threads as these but it's getting out of hand. Scroll the posts and see what I mean. I also understand why we have the points but is there a way to not supply points to certain threads? If your worried about bandwith and one liners then you should worry about these kind of posts.

I like the point system a lot, i remember the old resistence system where we had alien resistence, nwo resistence etc. If you see members posting one liners, just contact a staff member
When i first came to ATS, i would try to reply to every thread, but now i only reply to threads that interest me. Thats why i started the NWO index thread, to stop the same subjects being repeated again and again. But i do see where you are coming from though

Hrm... let's see, you've been a member for three months... and you already have the idea that something that's been around for a year is no good? As far as we can tell, the point system is the most reliable means to gauge a member's contribution to the community... far better than simple post count. Certainly some threads become problems, but that's a small percentage compared to the majority of quality contributions.

I've been around for much longer than three months and a member for much longer than three months. There has been a name change and the date was not updated and others before that.

Good contribution spittincobra....maybe I'll put you in for a one liner.

been a member a copply weeks now and still havent figered out the point of getting points lol. you get a free car if you get so manny points mabby? if that true count my points in lol.I come here to enjoy the post every one wrights and I have a fealing that if there are realy a hundred thousand members most are just here to read and post a thing or two.
having points or not matters little to me as i would still read and respond to post. But to all thoes who want points i say great and enjoy. I see no reasion this site should stop points though there are thoes who like them and want them.
On the other hand in a few years I could have more points then every one humm .Got to post more.lolol

I always thought the points system was ridiculous also, but what do I know...

The point system here at ATS is one of the best systems I have ever seen to both reward and guage the quality of members and staff.. Not to say that a low point count means that you have less value as a member. The point system is by far better than just a post count. I have been a memeber of another forum where everyone was driven to get to 1000 posts.. and everyone was posting meaningless crap just to get their post count up.

You want to take my points?

You better be willing to fight for them!

Points are earned not just given.. if you create a great topic and get many great replies why not be rewarded for it?

I would argue that one of the reasons among many that ATS is so HUGE now is because of the point system. It can motivate people to produce quality content. It worked for me!

A perfect explanation, Gazz. Plus you can purchase various additions - which adds to the 'fun'. I've got everything I need right now, but whenever I run out of ATS space, I can just purchase more. And who knows what new things are running through the mind of SkepticOverlord with regards the ATS store ?

I think the only possible problem could have been those people posting single lines full of
and
and
just to get points, plus those posting meaningless crap ... but that's been dealt with.

Points don't seem to get in the way of anything and add quite a bit to the ATS experience. The situations where members appear to be simply "point-grabbing" are quickly detected and dealt with. Getting a bonus from "applause" is wonderful positive reinforcement, and points are a good, easy way of offering prizes for participation in debates, contests, etc.

As Pisky mentioned, the ATS store is a great feature. I'm just afraid to buy anything because I know that as soon as I do something great will come along (like Webmail) and i won't be able to afford it!

it took a lot of hard work for me to get my points, i love the point system. To be honest, im going to marry the person who thought of that idea
I say, starting earning points then you will grow to like it
Also "point whores" are dealt with by the staff

You got to love ATS!

Sharing knowledge is the objective of members who "deny ignorance", not points. Perusal plus pre-planned posting prevent piss poor pointless prattle.

I only have 8,000 points but I know I've contributed more to this board than most of the people who have 20,000; 50,000; and even the 100,000+ people.

Get rid of the system.

One could argue the point system encourages ATS activity. I for one, like to deny ignorance.
