Just 2 to 3 hours or so before the big one hit, we had these:

4.6 2010/10/21 15:38:07 24.844 -109.160 26.8 GULF OF CALIFORNIA
4.2 2010/10/21 15:14:09 24.509 -109.168 10.0 GULF OF CALIFORNIA
4.7 2010/10/21 14:26:42 24.558 -109.288 26.0 GULF OF CALIFORNIA

You'd think with all that energy release, it would be enough... But then wham, 6.9. And that's what makes prediction near impossible. The trend was 4.7, 4.2, 4.6... Let's hope it's over.... But I don't see any aftershocks yet...that's curious. Usually we see some small bumps- but then again, the station I am forced to watch is pretty far away...so I can't really tell.

This bears watching - I have a lot of friends in Caif. I am hoping enough energy has been released but one certainly not perdict. Still wondering about the sun activity in relation to quakes. S @ F

what app lets you know about quakes? i might be interested in checking that out.

Hey, if you're on an iPhone I use 'USGSSeismic' - it's free and basic, but good, although now it's got ads (i refuse to update it to the ads) its what made me pop on here at 6am this morning and checking it in bed! I thought Cali might get something with all those 4's it's been having, I posted the other day in Quake watch that I had a feeling it wasn't over - really hoping that it is now though!

So far looks like the media is reporting no damages no tsunami, looks like it was nothing major. And I mean that in a good way. Has anyone heard otherwise yet?

I often subscribe to the "coincidence camp" side of things and don't think that governments, or anyone, can actually cause quakes especially at specific times but this is indeed interesting.

From freetree64's post

The warning sirens will sound at 10:21 in the morning.

And today is...

...Right. 10/21, at least to Americans. Just thought I'd point that out.

Just to let you know

there was no 6.9 - only a 6.7

Very astute observation, I missed that, and thank you for bringing that to our attention, I still feel very uneasy about the timing of this quake, in lieu of the large earthquake drill, just seems too uncanny....

As from what I can tell a 6.7 happened and then didn't happen and then a 6.9 happened.

It is all kind of confusing.

DELETED: Event US 2010crbm

***This event has been deleted after review by a seismologist.***

Geographic coordinates: 24.754N, 109.240W
Magnitude: 6.7
Universal Time (UTC): 21 Oct 2010 17:53:14
Time near the Epicenter: 21 Oct 2010 11:53:14

Location with respect to nearby cities:
116 km (72 miles) SSW (194 degrees) of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico

Just another mysterious "deleted" notification from the government.

You all know that earthquakes created by magma movement under the earth are not considered "real" earthquakes.

I few up in Cali, my first quake was a 6.0, scared the crap out of me as I was just a teenager. Biggest I saw there was a 7.3 just before I moved out of state.

I use Earthquake Notification Service

I set mine up with a gmail account and it syncs with my phone automatically. Painless and easy setup.

Just an FYI for those not familiar with the area; the Gulf of California is not actually in California, but Mexico.

The concern for California is the fact that they share a fault and that this may in fact be a pre-curser to something bigger a bit further up the line.

On that Note, I have been following deep tremors up here in Washington State, which pretty much stopped a few weeks ago....but today now there has been a large cluster in Northern California. Check out this interactive map: MAP

Coincidence? Hmmmm.....

Just thought I'd show you guys what this quake looked like at a seismic station about 100 miles away, IU.SLBS. This is the station that was not available online at the time it hit, but was working. The USGS has it listed as the closest station in their phase data. It is now back up and running.

This is mo betta than the typical webicorder graphs, because you can see the actual peak ground acceleration. It shows the waves created on all three broadband channels of the IU.SLBS seismic station.

And at a hundred miles away, it registered 8.66 mm/s on the BHE channel.

At the time, all I had available was station TA.214A, and was monitoring it live because of the other previous quakes mentioned that had hit the Gulf of Cali. So I saw the big one come in on TA.214A, which registered similar big numbers, but much much further away.

This is fun stuff, this seismo talk.
Sorry to bore yas if I do.

ETA: Aha! Now that I have SLBS back, I can see that yes there are aftershocks happening. Had a 4.1 already listed at USGS, but I have seen an additional small 2 on top of that. I really hope that plate boundary doesn't let loose and unleash the Tsunami from hell. People will hardly have much time to react, considering that location.

I use the same thing, but it's a lot easier if you just use your phone number followed by the service you use (your phone has an email address).

For example: [email protected] or whatever yours may be (I use AT&T but I forget exactly what the address you use for your phone is so you will have to check).

However, the above way also worked (the one I quoted). Just sign up and then have it forwarded to your phone.

I like getting text messages though; much easier IMO.
