There were 4 reports, all from different locations. People reported they saw UFOs near The Planet Jupiter. Personally, I think it's interesting because most UFO sightings that I've read or heard about were on Earth. The pictures aren't so great but I thought I'd share this.

Interesting.

I would wonder if these people were maybe seeing a couple of Jupiter's moons. Not discounting what they saw, especially when one of them disappeared later. It is not certain that they can even be seen with the naked eye......

I have been avidly watching Jupiter for the last few weeks through a telescope and have not personally seen anything but its bands and moons. This is a great post and I will be keeping my eye on this one (and Jupiter) thank you. S&F

And no you can not see Jupiter's moon with the naked eye, they are hard to see with the telescope (yes i have a crappy telescope...lol) but you can see them as bright dots next to Jupiter.
edit on 10/06/2010 by BigDuke6 because: More info.

I doubt they could be seen with the naked eye, there more or less only just visible as tiny specs of light with a good set of binoculars from personal experience. As for one disappearing, it could have easily moved into Jupiters shadow which would I guess make it appear to vanish.

Also (havent read the op link since the site asks me to fill out a survey before doing so, no thanks) where in the world where the sitings being had? Since someone might see something 'near' or around Jupiter but really its just that the objects are just doing stuff coincidentally between the viewer and Jupiter. A viewer a few miles away might have seen nothing or put the lights near some other star or planet.

Currently Jupiter is more or less directly above you in the night sky in my country.

you know jupiter has like 100+ moons. i can only see 4 of them with my 6in reflection telescope. you cant see the moons without the aid of a telescope of some kind. maybe there were looking at the moons.

Are you near light pollution? You should be able to see more of them through a 6'' reflector.

Under good conditions once, in the 1990's, I saw 9 of them through a 60 power spotting scope that I used for shooting.

From your link:

Illinois - 10/17/2010: I was outside lowering a flag. I glanced at Jupiter off to my left. It was visible in the southeast sky at about 70 degrees. I immediately noticed two stationery star like objects in the sky visible near Jupiter. I knew these had not been visible in the sky previously because I work outside in the evenings and had been watching Jupiter all summer. I looked away, thinking I would get out my astronomy app later to identify them. When I looked up again, one had disappeared and the second was fading as I watched. I watched it until it was no longer visible. Both lights were bright white, star-like and not moving. They did not reappear. I started to post this after that time but did not. I'm posting now because of similar reports on 10/18/2010 in Nevada and Oregon. Seeing these marks my fourth UFO sighting in 10 years living in east central Illinois. I am always curious about these and I was curious about this as well.

Thanks for the post!

I hadn't seen your thread that you linked to before this. The moons were my first guess, it is weird because they are difficult to see with the naked eye.

Some times are better than others for seeing more moons. Some of the larger ones may be behind Jupiter at times, so you will not be able to see them.

If you check out some astronomy web sites, they will list best viewing times of the year to see more of them at once.

I have looked at your link ______beforeitsnews/story/228/759/MUFON_CMS
and will confirm a report for them with my very own eye witness account in Hawaii. Here we have very clear skys great for viewing at night and I am an avid stargazer. So I know whats up there and where its at. I have seen many satelites and know what they look like and how they travel they come thru regularly because of island location in the middle of the Pacific. What I observed last night at about 8:15pmHST Nov 1st ,2010 was unlike any thing I have seen before. It was a flashing light as bright as some of out most closest stars and was seen about 5-10 degrees south east of the planet Ok here's the weird part: It was a steady flashing light when first observed and was pulsing approx every 7 seconds. Then it seemed to slowly travel in a south westerly direction and pulse less intensely as if it was traveling away from us. Not fading across the sky like a satelite or shooting start or comet. It drove away from us as in farther towards Jupiter! Even more interesting is that it didnt begin to move out of its original location until I became aware of IT . It was as if it was observing me observing it.
