Budget Cuts for MOD?

The Mail on Sunday published leaked details of cuts that all three armed services could face. These included 10,000 RAF personnel being cut and four of the Army's 40 battalions being axed, the paper said.

The Mail on Sunday also said Chancellor Gordon Brown is planning cuts that will see six of the Navy's 30 warships taken out of commission.

At least one air base - probably Coltishall in Norfolk, the paper said - would be closed and 41 Jaguar planes axed.

The Navy will lose four Type 42 destroyers and two Type 23 frigates, the paper claimed.

The Ministry of Defence has dismissed as "speculative" a media report that it is to face the biggest cuts in 20 years in an upcoming spending review.

I know it is the Mail but their do have a different editor now and I doubt they would do the same thing again (hoax things) because people would begin to stop believing them and stop buying the paper.

If it is true I think is it very sad indeed. The British armed forces have already had so much taken away already; RAF Jaguars, Air Base Closures, Replacement of Sea Harrier FA2 by the GR7 or 9 because it is cheaper to do this but they aren't as good on a carrier.

I so hope this story isn't true because the Armed Forces deserve better for all the hard work they do.

apparntly the cuts are 'hushed up' the information came from a leaked report, but the Labour Government is denying it ( more lies )

there proberly will be heavy cuts to the armed services, it's stupid as the Armed services are more spread out and under more pressure then ever before

they should copy the Americans instead of cutting its military we are going to spend 1 trillion in ten years to make it more independent and more bigger as a force so it can act alone better. Britain's military is getting smaller and smaller what is happening.

None of the politicans who decide the army budget and what we spend it on have ever been in the military their just pen pushers who hate the very idea of a strong military

Wars cost a hell of alot of money to prosecute and this is not usually factored into annual budgets that are set a year ahead of time.In order to balance the books other areas have to be cut. Since wages cost 1/2 the budget and operating cost amount to atleast 1/3 , these become the prime targets for such emergency cuts.....THe other alternative would be to get the hell out of this fiasco of a war

I swear ime going to emigrate to the US, our country is way to soft we are probably spending more money on social bs(paying for people who cannot be bothered to work etc).
Why cant this country get its priorities sorted out?
What happens if there is another falklands situation?
Why do we continue to cut defense spending when our troops dont even have body armour?
Why cant we build 2 carriers that are half the size of a nimitz?
Why is our navy only 1/4 what it was 25 years ago and still rapidly depleting with very few new ships being built?

We need to take a leaf out of the united states book,many may hate them but at least they protect their citizens to the best of their ability!

I swear those @$$holes in office are going to complain in a few years about lack of troops. Plus what happened to the great British Empire. And there gonna complain about unemployment after laying off there own personel.

We could always send the polititions to fight once they have laid everyone off

I know this is a British thing but America needs one strong allied and at the moment it is Britain but if Britain cannot help the us in the future or is not strong enough to back us up in a war what will happen to our relationship will we dislike you just like we dislike the French just a question.

one thing that bothers me is how can we spend 21.0138 billion pounds on defense and yet our troops are still are not well equiped

Seriously, I cant see the problem. We have had a general decline in the defence budget since the end of the cold war, because the fact is that we are no longer the power we once were. The position of high regard that our military still holds within the world theatre is not down to money, but the tireless dedication of our military personnel and the high quality of training that the forces provide.

I understand the need to protect ones own citizens but our armed forces currently have more than enough to do that ! What they dont have the ability and budget for is traipse halfway round the world and participate in a war that has no need, purpose, or even moralistic justification.

WestPoint23, how is a bigger, highly funded military which is more able to make decisions on its own better ? You say that as if its something to be proud of ? Surely educating our children to a reasonable level, erradicating poverty and disease, feeding and housing the homeless, putting the unemployed back to work, ensuring that the elderly have a dignified and decent retirement free from fear and worry, and also possibly giving aid to the developing world thru aids education, cancellation of debt and working towards ending famine and genocide would really be something to be proud of !? Or would you prefer yet another Nimitz class Aircraft Carrier to strengthen the fleet of 15/16 that you already have ? And dont get all uppety and think I'm having a go at the US, Im not, i'm just questioning all of our priorities here ?!
