Plum island is a very dangerous place and their has already been multiple virus outbreaks in the past that were catastrophic. The government is relocating plum island to Kansas state university in Manhattan Kansas. Why? Why the hell is gunna be relocated to a college town full of people.I have family in manhattan so I'm against it. If a viral outbreak happened in manhattan it would be worse than any disaster before. Plum island should be shut down and not be relocated at all. It should stop for good.

LOL, trying to pump up your post numbers by posting multiples of your own comments, eh?

Can't wait to hear what else you think should be "shut down for good" . . . the entire chain of Walgreen's drug stores because they sell pharmaceuticals? The White House for harboring corrupt politicians? Santa's workshop at the North Pole for making defective toys?

Also, I'm ever so curious why you think you don't have to post evidence of your conclusions in your original posts--or for that matter, post any at all?

Page 3 of this document talks about Plum Island....the whole doc is interesting...definately worth a read.

The risk of an accidental release of a pathogen is extremely low. The risk of an
accidental release of a pathogen is extremely low, but the economic effect would be significant for all
sites.

As described in Section 3.10.9, the economic impact of an outbreak of foot and mouth disease
virus has been previously studied and could result in a loss in the range of $2.8 in the Plum Island
region to $4.2 billion in the Manhattan, Kansas area over an extended period of time. The economic
loss is mainly due to foreign bans on U.S. livestock products.

Although the effects of an outbreak of Rift Valley Fever virus on the national economy has not been as extensively studied, the potential economic loss due to foreign bans on livestock could be similar to that of foot and mouth disease outbreak, while the additional cost due to its effect on the human population could be as high as $50 billion.

As far as i can see from the small amount i've read, the document is talking about potential incidents, but it's an eye opener for sure.

I was shocked to find this information out way after it has "been in the works" and can not even imagine the lack of coverage in the area. Aside from tornadoes I believed this to be a safe area yet now I want to tape up my windows no matter how far I live from the actual site. When it comes to situations like this I have noticed the extreme "sugar coated" approach to be the norm. Many are seeing this as an opportunity to build wealth and jobs, while this may be the case the long-term may be far worse than imagined. I am truly disgusted that decisions like this are made without letting tax payers make a stand for what they believe is right for their family.

Thank you for posting this I know I am late to respond yet with the things that keep going on I am waiting for the fault in Manhattan to give out or some super tornado and this just tops the cake. Here are a few links I have found and one even glorifying the company with a new study program.

Good find.
From the link: Sounds like the want the more secure location for a reason. Maybe the Mauntuc Monsters really did come from there, and they fear it will happen again . The new location just seems more risky, being closer to livestock.

DHS has determined that an accidental release of foot-and-mouth disease would have a $4.2 billion impact on the economy, regardless of the lab's location.
-from the site above(quoted)
Being closer to the "beef belt" surely won't help as aerosol(which is one of the ways foot-and-mouth dx is spread) can spread at least 100 kilometres(62... miles) in favored conditions, and later antigens spread from fomites(shoes, cars, etc). Seems an oubreak would occur faster. Less faster then from the island, across ocean inlet to NYC, then later to UpstateNY.
