recently i had the urge to pick up a bible for the first time in many years.
i think it's been since my bar mitzvah that i have studied the bible deeply.
i believe over the years i've spent more time within other religious text.
now that i have begun another delve into the bible, one of my main research goals
is to follow proven fact.
so, what is absolute truth?
where can i go, or what can i see or read that will prove certain passages,
the bible as a whole, or certain books?
i have no doubt there's been discussion of this topic, so link me please.
i have internet access, a passport and traveling money.
the idea is not to get me to waste my time following your opinion.
the idea is to honestly give me directions.
perhaps a map of sorts towards the truth.

Well it's all about Faith! People interpret the Bible. As well other religious text and will believe in what they say. Some except this and others except that. I guess the one that makes more sense to you.

www.biblehistory.net...

Here's an example:

'Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land..... And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up his spirit..... So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that happened, they feared greatly, saying, "Truly this was the Son of God!" Matthew 27:45-54 The first reference found outside of the bible mentioning this darkness which fell over the land during the crucifixion of Christ, comes from a Samaritan historian named Thallus, who wrote around 52 A.D. His work was quoted by another early historian by the name of Julius Africanus who researched the topic of this darkness and wrote the following: "Upon the whole world there came a most fearful darkness. Many rocks were split in two by an earthquake, and many places in Judea and other districts were thrown down. It seems very unreasonable to me that Thallus, in the third book of his histories, would try to explain away this darkness as an eclipse of the sun. For the Jews celebrate their Passover on the 14th day according to the moon, and the death of our Saviour falls on the day before the Passover. But an eclipse of the sun can only take place when the moon comes under the sun, how then could an eclipse have occurred when the moon is directly opposite the sun? (Scientifically it is impossible to have a full moon on the same day that there is an eclipse of the sun.) Another first century historian who also mentions this darkness was Phlegon who wrote a history entitled the "Olympiads. Julius Africanus mentioned a quote taken from the Olympiads which said: "Phlegon records that, in the time of Tiberius Caesar, at full moon, there was a full eclipse of the sun from the sixth hour to the ninth . . . It is evident that he did not know of any such events in previous years." Phlegon is also mentioned by Origen in his work ‘Against Celsus’ Book 2: "The darkening of the sun took place at the time of Tiberius Caesar, in whose reign Jesus was crucified, and the great earthquakes which then took place, Phlegon, I believe, has written an account in the thirteenth or fourteenth book of his Chronicles."

Religious texts are man made social tools designed to help keep really stupid and sometimes very dangerous people under control. Have fun on your quest.

religious leaders are stupid, lying, or crazy... all three?

thanx for the responses.
just to elaborate a bit.
this is not at all about me trying to convince my self judeo-christianity in any form is the way for me.
to be completely honest, i'm not sure what i believe.
i do believe in an energy that sustains life, but beyond that i'm not convinced of much at all.
i love historical accounts and historical fiction.
what better book concerning this than the bible?
i've traced historical books in the past.
walking a good chunk of louis and clarke's adventure.
wetherills tracks in his quest of the anasazi cliff dwellings etc.
i'm considering a middle east venture and would like to visit places that may help me research my quest.
out of the way, off the beaten tourist path.

My life was so much easier before I started asking the questions you are asking. The anonymity of this forum is great in that you are able to gage other peoples responces... before you speak to people who will hurt you for not already knowing the truth as they see it.

and thus at the same time exposing the different conspiracy theories involved.

tell me to go to where it says the burning bush was, for example.
beside being on the spot the bible tells me of,
what other proof is there?
fact, fiction or historical fiction?

edit to add, i didn't think this would be very tough.
something in a museum confirming a story.
i guess proving that the historical players ever really walked the earth isn't easy.
to bad there were not cameras on the street corners.

Hi.

Your best shot, I think, is to look into biblical archeology. This is a very good source, the subscription price is reasonable, and there's lots of content for you to explore, as well as the magazine.

www.bib-arch.org...

The long and the short of it is that it is very difficult to say what of the Bible is true. Archeology isn't going to get you to the ultimate question, whether the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob exists. But I think it's an excellent place to start looking for what can be established factually.

If you are interested in traveling there, then you can find links and advice through the website and magazine about opportunities to do so.

I hope that is helpful to you.

My opinion,
The Bible, as it carries some very valuable ideals and morals is not a fact.
as people have evolved over the thousands of years, what was seen as a miracle
today can be easily explained by simple science,.
Example: fish falling from the sky = waterspout in the area
Plagues = droughts,. simple climate frequencies
Much of these things have been proven already,.
People were much more likely to see divine intervention due to lack of knowledge.
This can still be witnessed today with tribes still living in remote jungles.
I also believe the Bible if it were a fact, would not have required so many REwritten versions

rubbertramp,

What you need is a good Bible software that runs the Hebrew Greek dictionary with the Bible and the KJV comes from the best manuscripts. Also with that get the propgram called "Treasury of scriptural knowledge". Forget theology and let the Bible itself be your guide, it is the Truth and theology is theroy that someone has dreamed up. Look if you are truly searching for truth He is searching for you. Joh 4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. Another good piece of advice is this one. Ac 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. Always ask Him for His Spirit to be with you to guide you as you don't want to be decieved. Ask for wisdom and understanding of His Word and He will hear you. Then you must listen for Him in your heart for that is where the Spirit speaks. He not only convicts of sin but of Truth when you have arrived but you must do your homework. Weigh all possiblilities that make sense and don't decide until He convicts you. The right path is hard to find and few there be that find it. Mt 7:14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. That is the reason you must be extremly careful as you adversary the devil is out wanting to destroy all he can. 1Pe 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: My friend these are perilous times to get to come to the knowledge of the Truth.

The Truth is a precious gem, that's who He is and also His Word is Truth.
Search diligently for it and it will find you.

Truthiron.

Faith? Faith in what? Faith in faith? What does that mean? Why do people mishandle the Word of God? Why don't we read it like any other non-fictional book? Instead, people pick and chose what they want to read or interpret, instead of reading it in context. Never take a sentence out and use it. If you did that, then you can say that the bible itself says there is no god. But if you take it into context it actually says the fool in his heart says there is no god.

The Christian faith is NOT about being a GOOD person! It's about Christ! It's a story of man's fallen nature and how God redeemed man's rebellious heart by sending His Only Son to die in place of our judgment, that we all deserve. We are under the curse, it saddens me to see all these people that don't see the truth and can't see it. That we, by our very nature are enslaved to our bodily desires. Living for pleasure and resisting pain on the account of others. Christ came to set us captives free. All we have to do is look upon him and believe in what He has done for us. Much like the Israelites had to look upon the brass serpant that Moses was told to make and raise up, so that all that were bitten by the poisens snakes, looked upon it and were saved from death. Jesus mentions this in John chapter 3. Why the connection? Because, the serpeant represents our orginial sin in Adam. Christ is risen on the Cross to neutralize the sin that dwells in us. Only if we look in belief. Will we still sin, yes. But that's what the sanctification process is that the Holy Spirit works in believers. Be in the Word and think of what it is saying. It is a mirror to show our true faces. If you were to open your thoughts up to the world to see, you would be mortified for everyone would know all the evil, betraying, hateful, lustful thoughts that run through it. I pray that you all see Christ, He changes your hearts to believe and love Him, and that you take what he says by faith and walk in Him by faith..

This alien thing is getting out of hand

He plants a cedar and the rain nourishes it. 15 Then it becomes fuel for a man. He takes a part of it and warms himself; he kindles a fire and bakes bread. Also he makes a god and worships it; he makes it an idol and falls down before it. 16 Half of it he burns in the fire. Over the half he eats meat; he roasts it and is satisfied. Also he warms himself and says, "Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire!" 17 And the rest of it he makes into a god, his idol, and falls down to it and worships it. He prays to it and says, "Deliver me, for you are my god!"
18 They know not, nor do they discern, for he has shut their eyes, so that they cannot see, and their hearts, so that they cannot understand. 19 No one considers, nor is there knowledge or discernment to say, "Half of it I burned in the fire; I also baked bread on its coals; I roasted meat and have eaten. And shall I make the rest of it an abomination? Shall I fall down before a block of wood?" 20 He feeds on ashes; a deluded heart has led him astray, and he cannot deliver himself or say, "Is there not a lie in my right hand?"
Isaiah 44:14-20 (ESV)
