I hope your right.

I`d forgotten all about it after all the noise concerning the web filter from a year or so ago, then read this article a little while ago saying its coming in this December.

I hope I'm wrong because the Filter will be updated possibly daily with sites not to be accessed. Anything considered Seditious, according to our relatively new Howard Era Laws, will be included. Which means sites like this perhaps, and many others.

All the protesting voices made no difference it would seem, and so we see how it is to play out here. Funny that as it seems we trial things for other countries to observe before working toward doing the same.

I meant (thought it was clear) I hope your right its been scrapped.

Just did some searching on it,here`s the latest I found....

www.theage.com.au...

It sounds to me its nearly dead, but still has a slight pulse.

Which is pretty confusing when they mention December for Australia in the OP link?

Back to the OP, the day they take our free flow of information, which we call the internet, is the day the human race is lost to tyrants. I hope to never see that day myself!

I agree with you entirely, but that last statement coerced me to post a reply.

Do you know how long it took to get what we consider the internet? I've been using a computer since the 80's and always had dialup access to bbc's.

it gets ridiculous when people equate the internet as we have it today, handed to us in all it's glory, as a god given right.

It's not. if we had not had nodes, and all that jaz, this would be a mystery. man....

Yes I do know that. I've been using a computer myself since DOS and Windows 3 lol! Also have a Networking degree.

I didn't say the internet was a right, but I do believe it should be. Knowledge is power and I believe TPTB want to restrict our knowledge as much as possible.

I dont believe this will pass..Too many problems with Big Bussiness networks.
That's what will stop it. Not the screams and protests from us peasants.

IMHO, the solution is education.
Teach the people what to look out for in regards to scams etc.
Monitor your childrens access or add personal Parental Locks.

The only hard one is Child Porn and they are smart enough to find a way around a filter anyway.

If you let Goverment decide what you can or cant view then thats the beginning of the end....

I did some reasearch on this a while back, but i heard it was 2011 that it was going to come in.
Either way, the last thing we need is the government yet again influencing what we see even more than what they already do.
Wouldnt suprise me if ATS was blacklisted.
I'll just jump on my kangaroo and somehow get to NZ.

What a disgusting event this is for the free world that we here in Australia are becoming a POLICE STATE. There's been no terriorism in this country none! However our rights are diminishing all the time.

It's illegal to protest in groups of more than 6 now unless you get permission from the police.

It's illegal to boycott any business regardless of what they have done. The business can sue you for loss of sales. You can only sue them if your rendered 15% or more disabled.

Our phones can be tapped at any time.

It's illegal to film a police officer in any circumstances.

We have cameras everywhere.

I have personally been assulted by police 3 times, once on police camera (this was then investigated by the assualter's mate, here in Sydney!!)

Immigrants litterally have more rights.

Citizens here that come from the first white settlers cannot afford houses while anyone from Asia that's wealthy come right in to buy the house.

Our most honorable leader in decades get's kicked out of office for his reasonable position against Israel.

We're being taken to the cleaners here!

I dont mind the cameras.

I dont mind immigrants seeking a better life,so long as we also help battling Aussies here. (I would like to see the undesirables that already live here shipped off or shipped back)

I dont mind harsh gun laws and restrictions.

But when it comes to Gov censorship,I see that as very dangerous.More dangerous than any of the ills of the internet.(as bad as they are)

There are many Pollies who are totally against it.

If it does come in? and as you say we will have to take drastic steps to reverse it,I hope there are enough Aussies out there willing to go the distance. You can count me in for the long haul.

Agree with all bar the camera's.

It's the 'we accept any wealthy migrants' that get's to me. I want migrants too but not a generation of renters (lower class) both Australian born or migrant. I know it's a cash ejection to Australia but enough of selling our land/houses, let's import less junk and rebuild our export manufacturing?

With the wikileaks document it was apparent that the Australian web ban was around 98 percent porn sites.
It seems weird that the most popular porn site known to USA citizens has just went offline starting yesterday.(so I heard)
it had x and a n, and a x and another x.

I fear it may have already begun.
When adult video sites start disappearing, you will know it is implemented.
If our ban list will be anything near Austrailias that is.

Reason? It is hard to sift and spy through a populations internet habits when the are streaming pornography half the time.

I don't know. . .to be honest, my wife downloaded a movie. . .the next day as soon as she loaded her homepage, there was big red message saying essentially quit or we'll terminate your service. Needless to say I took it seriously. I don't know how it works, but somebody sure knew she'd done it.

Saying this is going to get me ridiculed because it has happened before, but it is the truth.

There exists right now about a million or more scams per minute trying to con people for their identity an money on the internet.

Just today I got about 6 e-mails claiming to be the IRS and they need my info, providing a spoofed link to some random website. There is about 4 e-mails in my box pretending to be UPS and I have a package on hold that needs to be delivered, and I need to fill out info. There is about 6 e-mails claiming to be awesome credit card deal that I should apply for which is fake. And, how often do I get a chance to have millions of dollars to my bank account from Nigeria? To often.

This doesn't include the millions of rouge websites which are getting cheaper and cheaper for thieves to own which spoof legit stores, banks, services, etc., which will just take your money and send it overseas to some foreigner laughing all the way to the bank with no way to track them.

The internet is a real-virtual world with very little authority. The real-virtual world is getting larger and more popular, and younger people are getting better access, and so are the thieves and con artists.

It is the truth when I say the internet is a con artists dream, and sprawling with illegal activity (not talking about file sharing).

It is the truth when I say innocent people are being taken advantage of every day by evil men on the internet.

It is the truth that something should be done to reduce the crime rate. I'm not saying add censorship, or spy on people, or kill anonymity, and privacy... but do something to help these poor innocent people out.

As a computer tech. it's almost like watching little ol' ladies get their purses snatched and you not doing anything about it.

That's just the truth.

I agree about all those sites but the Australian plan did nothing to stop them.
There is not even a US government agency to report many of the sites conducting illegal activity.
Even reporting many of the site conducting illegal activity to there host does nothing if the site is in China, Vietnam or a number of other countries that support the criminal activity.
Just tracking the Canadian pharmacy sites and few are even in Canada most are hosted in china and run by Chinese scammers.

I do progressive IP address searches and only about 20% of the Internet is open to the public,
The rest are things like ATMs to banks, wind turbines to control rooms, company intranets, ECT ECT ECT.
you have to know the ip address and have a user name and password just to get on these.

If the government wants to filter the Internet the way around is to set up intranets.(back channels)
People trading identities have these that they use to buy and sell stolen identity information.
Child porn groups have these to trade child porn.
If you find one of these sites by using a progressive IP address search all you might find are two boxes on a white page.
the first is for the user name and the second for the password. The government will not know ether so they will not be able to enter the site to check what its for and without knowing they may crash a wind turbine by filtering it or shut down a ATM..

That means that the reasons the government claims for the filtering of the web are all bogus and BS.

There are better ways to stop crimes on the internet.
But the government has never tried any of them.
One that is posable is what is called a internet passport for anyone dealing with more then a set amount of money per year. say $1000.00
Anyone doing business would have to get a internet passport before doing business on the internet from there government, a host company, Or other means, they would have to show valid ID and be fingerprinted and be given a passport number and code to identfy themseleves and there sites.
If criminal activity is detected then the site could be blocked and/or shut down.
