I just came across this and thought the folks interested in earthquakes might like to take a look and speculate what they think may be happening. Could this really be the beginning of a new ocean?

A magnitude 14 quake in Africa has split the ground open.

No.
Just no. There was no "magnitude 14 earthquake"

Using newly gathered seismic data from 2005, researchers reconstructed the event to show the rift tore open along its entire 35-mile length in just days. Dabbahu, a volcano at the northern end of the rift, erupted first, then magma pushed up through the middle of the rift area and began "unzipping" the rift in both directions, the researchers explained in a statement today.

The last reported seismic activity on the continent of Africa was reported on Thursday Oct 14 2010 off the coast of Tanzania and had a magnitude of 5.2. Link here Tanzania quake

Thanks for posting that link. It was a good read as well.

It really hurts to see what I've seen....even more so of what is "on the Waaaay......."
That said, Some people will only ever understand one thing. I thinks that this
is a sign and warning. So be it.

I can't even imagine what a magnitude 14 earthquake would do. No such thing - thank goodness!

yeah, phage. appreciate the clarification. when i read the title my head almost exploded. lol. a mag 14 quake would probably be felt all over the world. could you imagine the tsunami from that? it world split more than africa...

There is no seismometer made that could withstand and register that large a magnitude. 10, maybe 11 is max, and they would be completely saturated at that. So even if you could see that much, no one would be able to determine the exact magnitude above that. It would have to be a guess.

The thread title in itself is making an outrageous lie of a claim, and completely impossible. HOAX.

That blew my mind. Regardless of the earthquake mag. Or how that fissure happened in the ground...its AmAzing.

I'll be falling in line with Phage and some other members on this one OP.

Because today’s instruments are so much more sensitive, scientists can detect even smaller earthquakes that are given negative magnitudes. The highest Richter earthquakes were measured at 9.0.

I thank you for my time,

The eathquake that hit Sumatra, Thailand, etc and caused the horrendous tsunami altered time, the earth's orbit, etc was 9 , 9.2? A 14 would only make a rip in the ground and that's it?????? Come on. Breathe.

I wonder if this has anything to do with current activity on the Sun?

Did the OP even watch the video?
It even states clearly that you should disregard the quake magnitude as stated.
Terrible.

Don't forget that the richter scale is set up so that each integer contains 10 times as much energy as the previous integer. For example: a magnitude 2 quake is 10 times as powerful as a magnitude 1, and a magnitude 3 is 10 times as powerful as a magnitude 2 and so on. I remember hearing that a magnitude 17 quake would literally tear the earth apart from the inside out.

Well seeing as it occured in 2005 I'd say it is doubtful.

I thought wow, he watched a 4 minute vid and replied in only 2 minutes, incredible.
Then I watch the vid and in the first 10 secs a banner comes up in bright red saying to ignore the magnitude 14.

Not sure how the OP missed that...

I didn't have to watch the video.
The claim is absurd and I already knew about the rift.

Yeah I'm pretty sure a 14 would be felt country wide and pretty much rock the nation. Not just open a crack.

I'm going to commission an artist to draw up a new avatar for Phage, him carrying a big sledgehammer covered in stars and gem encrusted handle with the worlds "Slayer of Disinfo" Carved into the head.

It shall be epic.
