Winter will come early to Britain next week as snow is forecast for the north while the south will shiver in frosty sub-zero nights.
The cold snap will seem worse after temperatures soared to 75F (23C) last weekend.
Forecasters warned snow is due in Scotland and possibly northern England next week, with frost as far south as southern England, which will see bitter 48F (9C) daytime maximum temperatures.
“A northerly air stream in the middle part of next week means coldest conditions will probably be in Scotland, with sleet or snow showers and snow settling on higher ground,” said forecaster Brian Gaze of independent forecasters The Weather Outlook.

I tell you something its been freezing the past couple of nights as it is but i don't buy in to this global warming crap just normal cycles we go through.
Just wish they were warmer cycles

So what do you think about this normal

Edit to add this little bit

The Weather Outlook, which has an accurate seasonal forecasting record, warned the UK is now being gripped by a bitter series of winters comparable with the harsh 1939-42 winters which made conditions so horrendous during the Second World War.

Thanks

From the link in the OP.

..Doesn't seem that weird to me.

Just seems to get like that around this time of year, every year.

I am going to check with Al Gore on this......(pause)......

He says it is even further incontrovertible proof of global warming, and the existence of manbearpig.

Seriously though, I think we are entering a cooling phase in our world climate. May even get ugly soon.

I agree with you there. I have been following the climate debate closely (I am a retired chemist/farmer) and if we do go into a cooling phase as the natural cycles indicate it may effect the food supply. especially since thanks to the "freedom to farm act of 1996 the USDA did away with grain stores.

If a big volcano goes off we could be in a world of hurt.

Not entirely sure what planet some people are on, but in Winter in the UK it does get cold, frosty and can (and does) snow. I know that every year the press gets all excited about the snow being the worst ever, but it's normally just the same except some people get more pathetic about driving.

It's probably a good bet that there will be snow.

That's all fine and dandy in winter but.

Winter
The day when the north pole is furthest from the Sun is called the 'winter solstice'. The Sun crosses the sky at its lowest point all year. Therefore it crosses the sky in the quickest time so this is the shortest day of the year. Winter solstice happens around 22 December and marks the start of winter. From then on, the days start getting longer.

As you know its October i know we always say winter is way before december but i do think its getting colder earlier each year my opinion thats all

Thanks

As a serious weather fanatic, and a resident in North East Scotland, i can tell you that it is normal to have low daily maximums of about 4oC this time of year (on a cold day) and nightly minimums of -2/3oC at this time of year, however, the last timw i remember snow at low levels in mid/late October was 1997ish! If anything, a flurry could be expected but to have it in the papers is unusual. Scotland is notoriously colder than England in winter and we frequently have snow when they dont, but like i said its not very common to have snow forecast for low levels at this time of year.

I did hear about the Gulf Stream slowing and not recovering, i wonder if our winter will be worse this year compared to last year (worst winter in 30 years)...

I just read that Telegraph article in full and it concerns me that TWO (who are very accurate at long range forecasts) are stating that this could be the worst winter out of the past 3. If their projections are right and its more of an Easterly flow, then prepare for mayhem. If the cold comes off of the East and not North East as usual, the central/western cities will have a lot of snow to deal with. That would include cities such as Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Glasgow, Cardiff, not to mention the M6 motorway. This would leave the East side of the UK to bear the colder temps, which, if it drops below -15oC, you can expect your pipes to burst, rivers to freeze over and inevitable deaths (esp elderly). Cities affected by the cold temps would be London, Edinburgh, Newcastle but to name a few.

The UK is not prepared for this. They will not have enough GRIT (not that it has an effect below -10oC), nor does it have the means to deal with the snow deluge that could result. Even here is Scotland, we got a wake up call as to how it used to be, if that report is accurate and were in for another 1943 episode, i shudder the though of what could happen to the UK's infrastructure and aged people.

I don't think the UK really gets a lot of snow compared to other countries. Very cold snaps seem to come in cycles, so sometimes it's a few years between really cold winters.

I used to pray for snow as a kid so I know how rare it's been in my life 'cos I never seemed to get what I asked for, and I live in Scotland.

Just a few years ago I was doing the garden in a t-shirt in the middle of January. On the coast mind you, so that probably has an effect on snowfall.

Very cold last winter though and I think this year will be the same. I do find it a bit worrying. From what I understand, global warming melts arctic ice, which then dilutes the salty sea water. If the balance is tipped then the atlantic conveyor could halt. Then that will bring a mini-ice age to countries in the northern hemisphere. I do believe it could happen overnight. So global warming really means cold, for us.

That, alongside over-crowding, lack of food, (if all these strikes are to go ahead this winter), and chaos could happen at any time.

Global warming is happening and has happened since the dawn of time. The Earth and its climate is forever changing. What is scary about this is the fact that even though the UK is being warned about the "potential" severe winter, they will not make plans. People in the UK have little idea what its like to feel temps and snowfall like it was in the 40's or 70's. Last year was but a reminder of the potential. I have seen pictures of what it was like. 15' snow drifts blocking the entire road. Animals having to be dug out, no running water, electricity pylons downed due to ice.

This country is NOT prepared for extreme cold. The Thames in London used to freeze (1890's). We were in a warmer spell but i personally feel that warmer cycle is over and a lot of physical changes are happening in the world, not just in the UK.

The Gulf stream slowing down happens every single year at the same time, in thesame fashion. The concern is that it hasnt properly restarted yet. Or at least got to its full capacity. Thats not to say that it wont get to its maxima but its taking its time in doing so. That could result in this prediction and the models used for long range forecasting. I would say that forecast is accurate.

Its strange that the Telegraph should report this, and TWO should mention what they have in that article given it was only last week we had this thread created here on ATS.

Coldest Winter In 1000 Years On Its Way

Like i say, if the snow starts early, it will continue through til April. Make sure your prepared for it.

I agree ... October does seem a little early to be talking 'snow' ... jeez it's only 5mins since summer stepped around the corner.

On the matter of 'blankets with sleeves' ... sir, I detect a note of sarcasm in your tone
I was given one of these by my elderly mother last year (yes I know it should be the other way around ... what can I say ... we're a weird family) ... and they are officially called 'Snuggies' ... good idea on paper ... not so good in the fleece ... especially if you're trying to get out of one in a hurry when a visitor turns up unexpectedly (total nightmare and very ungainly).

However, my 19yr old son thought it was hilarious that his cool, witchy mom should own such a garment ... and likes to show me how versitile said garment becomes when put on back to front and you do an impression of a Gospel Singer (admit it ... you WILL try this the first chance you get)
