So I tried to buy chewing gum at school the other day...

There must have been about 6 or 7 different types of gum and ALL of them contained aspartame!

I've noticed that lately, even some brands of gum which are not marked 'sugar-free' contains aspartame, although some brands have a mix of sucrose, aspartame, xylitol and sucralose. My question is WHY?

All I want is regular gum without poison in it. Yeah, regular gum has sugar and stuff and it's probably not that great for your teeth, but sugar is a heck of a lot less damaging in the long run than this disgusting product called aspartame. It used to be that I could buy Juicy Fruit without a problem. Well, the other day I bought some without a thought, only to get that familiar sickly aftertaste. And it was regular, not sugar-free!

Recently at Target, ALL of the brands of gum on the shelf had aspartame. I finally found one brand at the checkout aisle which did not. What is going on? I thought people were becoming more health-concious and suspicious of artificial sweeteners, and that the manufacturers were in turn paying attention to what people want to buy! Or does the general public really just not care what they are putting into their bodies?

Very upset.

I think buying gum and thinking about being healthy and only putting good things into your body are polar opposites by way of reasonable thinking.

Whilst the cognitive dissonance it must take to do this is astounding, asking others to point out the obvious flaw in reasoning is remarkable.

Stick to fruit.

Chew on raisins.

Who cares about consuming Rat poison if it saves you some caloric intake right?

I noticed it too here in Canada. It cost's more for real sugar in your gum if you are lucky enough to find it. Freaked me out this summer when I realized it.

I never buy gum and was curious how long it has been this way. Seriously, no gum with real sugar at our only grocery store and they have alot of different kinds of gum.

I hear ya. It's hard to find good gum these days.
If they are putting aspartame in products that are not specifically labeled "sugar free", I suspect that its more economical. I don't know if aspartame is cheaper than sugar but it they buy it in enough bulk, it very well could be. They are probably adding the other ingredients to get it closer to the real sugar taste while adding aspartame to keep the costs down or to simplify manufacturing. They know not everyone will buy sugar-free gum but if they could make the same (or very similar) product and slap both a "regular" and "sugar-free" label on it it would make things easier for them.
If we are being poisoned by increasing levels of aspartame in the products we buy, I don't think it's something they are doing to intentionally hurt us, they probably just don't care if it saves them a buck.

It has been known since the 5's that Aspartame is deadly and has come up in congress when it was finally allowed to be used in Soft Drinks in the 70's. It converts to Formaldahyde once it is above 94 degrees. The Government knows damn well what they are doing.

I go to any organic place and I always find just regular old fashioned chewing gum without aspartame.

One also wonders why you can't find toothepaste without flouride in it. Even kids toothpaste has flouride in it! Is it not obvious that a kid is going to swallow that stuff when brushing his teeth!

Only recently did I finally find a toothpaste without flouride, it is a relatively new brand on the market as well. and it gives the reason for not putting flouride in the toothpaste "some people do not want flouride in there toothpaste". what does that say about other toothpaste companies?

Ha, ha! I like this thread because this kind of stuff really ticks me off, too. Recently, my husband bought me what he thought was a Pepsi because the label was very similar, just darker than regular Pepsi. I took a swig and wanted to puke. Why? Aspartame! I didn't let him hear the end of that for a while.

Thereafter, I purchased a bottle of Gatorade G2. After taking a drink of that and, again, almost puking, I took a closer look at the label and saw that I'd purchased the "low calorie" version which contained our good friend aspartame's buddy, sucralose. NASTY! The only way to tell the difference in the packaging of the regular Gatorade and the G2 version in this flavor was a thin white band around the G2's bottle that says "low calorie."

Also, there have been at least two occasions where I've purchased single bottles of REGULAR Pepsi and clearly, I can taste an artificial sweetener such as aspartame. I hate diet drinks, so that "diet flavor" sticks out like a sore thumb on my taste buds.

I know, I know, you're gonna say, "Give up Pepsi, idiot!" Well, at this rate, I will be doing just that. As a matter of fact, Ive just finished tackling the toxins in my tap water with a purifier. No wonder people are starting to grow their own food. Every where we turn we're being poisoned by some toxin. Can't wait to hear what health issues we've been subjected to by microwave ovens...that's why I got rid of mine.

What does that say about Americans? There's a mountain of evidence confirming the dangers of fluoride, yet Americans are either unaware or ignore it. Have you noticed there's a bottled water company who recently began putting it in their water and they PROUDLY display this fact on the label like it's a beneficial thing! What does it say about our politicians? Isn't it their job to write legislation to cease this kind of thing? Surely they are aware of it and know of the activists out there working to stop it!

Real sugar seems to have an even worse reputation. As a hypoglycemic who often finds themselves dizzy while running errands due to poor planning, can certainly appreciate the value of a sugar laden piece of candy until I can get something more substantial. But I have found a lot of people have a higher level of negativity towards real sugar than they do aspartame. I was just talking to two good friends of mine the other day trying to explain that is something is made in a lab, not by nature you weren't meant to ingest it. The responses of two people I consider to be very intelligent left me dumbstruck.

And the 'inert' ingredient in toothpaste?

Aluminum hydroxide.

And, when you add flouride....

Aluminum flouride anyone?

Use tooth powders. There are a number on the market.

But watch out for triclosan.

Which is also a neuro-toxin, as I recall.

My husband is also in need of sugar at times. He is a type 2 diabetic, and a long haul truck driver. Often they aren't able to pull over and eat at times needed to get the sugar into the blood, and needs that piece of sugary candy to not pass out. It's very hard to find a bag of candy these days that isn't aspartame or xylitol. I don't even allow xylitol in the house because if one of the dogs ever gets hold of it accidently, it can be fatal to them.

Exactly, at regular stores here in town (like Wal-mart, etc) 90% of the toothpastes have fluoride. The one brand that doesn't is almost 5 bucks for a not-so-big tube.... the real cringe-worthy products are the fluoride mouth rinses for toddlers, or worse, fluoridated bottled water for INFANTS! It's one thing to rinse your mouth out with this garbage, but ingest it? At an crucial developmental stage in your kid's life?

Sucrose is table sugar.

And xylitol is a sugar alcohol. (they aren't artificial)

If you don't even know the difference between common sweeteners, isn't there a chance that statements such as "sugar is less damaging than aspartame" could be baseless and untrue?

Truth is, sugar is much more damaging that aspartame (given the current data).

The potency of a poison is extremely dependent on the dose. The determining factor regarding the toxicity of a chemical is the dose. See Water Intoxication.
