I just relayed the news i saw in the paper this morning mate.

But I do agree, i always hope to see something like this strange fish discovery. A totally new species unknown to us, and never before seen. I love this type of stuff.

Lets assume that this is a morey eel.

How then does it land up of the south east coast of South Africa?

The waters here does not contain morey eels.

Ok, the one guy in the article said, that it looks like the black Mussle Cracker (cymatoceps nasutus)
They have 4 prominent canines and 2 rows of molers in each jaw.
I'm on my cellphone so I can't copy ec. The website that I found some info on is Treknature.com

I really have no idea my friend...

Could have been stuck on a ship or so from somewhere else

Could have been pooped out by a sea monster...

No clue man, just reminds me of morays, you have to admit that it look very similar to a moray head.

That thing is ugly as sin. I have a theory that these newly found species are either a mutation are engineered by aliens. If anyone wants the article translated, just open the link in Google Chrome, it will ask you if you want it translated from African to English.

It looks like the decomposed head of a hyena to me.
I see no scales or anything to make me think it's a fish of some kind.

Except that can sometimes cause restriction due to copyright or imposed problems to hotlinking.

I prefer to always save a local copy = fair rights surely? and embed it in my images section.

I always thought the url address was traceable credit to where the picture came from. I never really thought about it as being illegal to share information. But then again, I just figure I'm not going to live long enough to learn all the laws, so I just to the best I can. I didn't know we could get in trouble or ATS could get in trouble for a picture.

Thanks for letting me/us know,
ET

just a single, crappy, low res picture of this thing? Something's "fishy" here.

Reminds me too much of this.

S & F

I love these threads. Simply because we have split the Atom or flown in space doesn't mean we know everything there is to know about Earth. Not to mention the depths of the oceans.

Not a moray:

And where do you guys see any fur? What I see is a decomposed creature, that is missing at least half of its lower body. Based on the decomposition and inflation by water, and lack of any lower body parts, the only thing we can base any real conclusions on, is the jaw.

And based on that, my vote is on a young crocodile species, maybe a caiman:

The accompanying article with the original pic, has a piece in it where the marine biologist, confirms it has got hair, or fur on it.

You do have an interesting take on it though. I think the jaw is the key in this pic as to what it might be.

I will update this thread if they ever do discover what the hell that thing is.

Ah, I thought that was your take on the picture.

But even though fur-like structures are seen among some ocean species, I don't expect it to be an ocean species. Not with that jaw.

Edit: Does the article say anything about the size? That could be the major determinant for figuring it out.

Just an update people.

I followed this story since it was released. And the case has been resolved.

According to this article it is a seal.

Marine biologist discovered, after closer inspection, that it was a decomposed seal, maybe 4 months decomposed.

However not a seal from our waters, but one drifted from antartica.

Sorry, i was hoping it was something more exciting.

I geuss you were right GemWolf.

Case closed.
