I posted this on the Quake Watch 2010 Forum, but wondered if there was anyone here who follows Nuclear Testing on an ongoing basis and would be able to point me in the right direction with this?

Possible Underground Nuclear Test?

I missed this yesterday (because I didn't look at any of the other Global Networks other than USGS) and they didn't show it.

emsc list INFP (National Institute for Earth Physics -- Bucharest, Romania (BUC)) and RAS Geophysical Survey of the Russian Academy of Sciences -- Obninsk, Russia (GSRC) as data providers, but neither show anything for that location, as well as nothing on USGS (as I said). Is this a "can neither confirm nor deny" non statement by the two superpowers? "Cough, um, na we don't do nuclear tests any more"

Novaya Zemlya Island is the location of many previous USSR/Russian nuclear tests, although this one looks a bit further north than the normal test sites at the southern tip of the island.

To confuse matters, using Google Maps the emsc epi-centre is shown as in an unnamed bay north west of " Nennets" which looks like a label for a peninsula, the geofon location is further down the coast and the norsar epic centre is inland from that first bay.

Nuclear Test or not

Can you find any of the seismograms? That may be instructive.

Puterman found this one that shows the event SBP1 which is from SPITSBERGEN ARRAY SITE B1, SVALBARD 78.18 16.39

Comparing that to the image on the link you provided it looks more like a normal quake to me.

2K deep - nuke shots don't go down that far.

The NK tests registered at 0km I do beleive.

I doubt the Russians would want to break the comprehensive test ban treaty

Sorry but that is incorrect, whilst the average depth of USSR underground nuclear tests was around 800 metres deep there were quite a few deeper than 1km and several deeper than 2km, that is why this event caught my eye.
Normally when the depth of an earthquake is unknown and is "shallow" they put 10km, so 2km is quite precise as to the depth in this case. 2km for an earthquake is VERY shallow.

Heres a few historic USSR Nuclear Tests deeper than 1km complied off Wm. Robert Johnstons database lists;

Nuclear Test Database

Of course yall will need a Map to go with that. The event that this is all about is the top one with the earthquake icon. And the KMZ file for Google Earth
