WASHINGTON – The White House blocked efforts by federal scientists to tell the public just how bad the Gulf oil spill could have been. That finding comes from a panel appointed by President Barack Obama to investigate the worst offshore oil spill in history

In documents released Wednesday, the national oil spill commission reveals that in late April or early May the White House budget office denied a request from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to make public the worst-case discharge from the blown-out well.

I swear.... the people can't trust the Gov't in ANY way, shape or form. Why are they afraid to release info? Why keep the people in the dark?

Because.... they are hiding Something.... what will it be? Time will tell.

Keep digging folks... I smell smoke.....

BP estimated the worse scenario to be a leak of 2.5 million gallons per day. The government, meanwhile, was telling the public the well was releasing 210,000 gallons per day - a figure that later grew closer to BP's figure.

So what is this msm report saying? If I read it correctly it states that the actual numbers were closer or at the level of worst case scenario...

This seems like more BPBS jargon, steering the masses into a bit more time, and distancing themselves from the catastrophic tear in the ocean floor which is still killing millions of lifeforms, creating manmade problems with the Gulfstream and contaminating humans and animals alike.

And BP shuts the feeds down while the oil volcano stirs to reerupting.
What is it with Obamas imbecile behavior these days is he actually happy about this oil volcano.

I realy love this little piece of info

The report shows "the political process was in charge and science really does not have the role that was touted," said Christopher D'Elia, dean of environmental studies at Louisiana State University.

that is just scary

Pardon? What do you mean 'taking glory'?

Interesting that this study found the "White House" guilty of blocking initial estimates was found by a panel appointed by the White House.

I woke up this morning to see the MSM/Fox running this story.

A little bit behind but better late than never.

Guess the people in the power/decision positions at the news corps didn't see my post until they got home last night.... lol

Have a good day everyone.

Anyone in the Nashville TN area?

I'm not sure why you find that very compelling. Politically, he had little choice but to establish the commission. (*)

Moreover, in this age of toothless accountability, I'm sure there were those who thought that any message issued by the commission could be controlled or sufficiently managed.

Cheers to the honest members of the commission who upheld their fiduciary duty to the American public.

S&F

This was all about damage control, not for the spill, but for BP's name, and Obama Administraions rating.

scepticism rose again last month when government agencies produced a report saying about 75% of the oil had been captured, burned, dissolved or dispersed.

Bill Lehr, a senior scientist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, stood by the report yesterday.

The authority of that report was also challenged when a leading oceanographer told the commission that more than half of the oil that spilled into the Gulf was now buried along the coast or on the sea floor.

"Over 50% of the total discharge is a highly durable material that resists further dissipation," Ian MacDonald, a scientist at Florida State University told the commission.

"Much of it is now buried in marine and coastal sediments.

Wow...you guys hate Obama so much...it's hilarious.

So...what happened to the whole Gulf dying out? Or that the oil will reach the entire east coast and kill off all sea life there? Or the big methane bubble? Or that the oil will pollute the entire Ocean and we will all die off? Or that this was going to leak for YEARS???

It seems like there were no shortages of scary theories out there...and most of them involved a side theme of "Obama isn't doing anything about it".

Well guess what...he did do something about it...he acted on day one...and look...the Gulf isn't dead...the Oceans aren't dead...we aren't dead...oh and the oil isn't leaking anymore.

So I guess that Obama...acting and limiting the disaster...is a bad thing...right? Or was it BP that saved us all???

I often wonder why fervent Obama supporters can't see how indistinguishable they are from the previously fervent Bush supporters.

It is no wonder why matters in this country fail to materially improve.

No. You clearly miss the point. I'm saying this information doesnt damn the President, as some in this thread have implied. The White House ordered the study in the first place. Wouldnt that be a great example of government accountability and transparency?

Or are you one of those right wing apologists who will try to make the entire Deepwater issue about "Obama" and not decades of mismanagement of the MMS by both Democrats and Republicans in Congress?

Naw, that's too complicated and messy, right? Better just blame Obama and vote for Pali !

Tell me, what part of the post you were responding to was a 'fervent supporter'?

All he did was point out that blaming Obama for a systemic problem that goes back decades is incredibly wrong.

Funny how all you have to do on ATS is blame the president (Bush, Obama, anyone) and the ignorant rubes will lap it up, while totally ignoring the true extent of the problem.

Blaming the POTUS for a problem with Congress is a symptom of someone who has ZERO understanding of how the US government actually works.

But if all you got in response is to call someone pointing out this fact an Obamabot, well, you are exposing yourself as lacking this basic understanding of civics.
