Well the site has been there for ages, it's just others get the publicity. Kind of interesting if you think about it.

Interesting story, thanks for the link

I haven't heard of this site either. um...so what am I missing if anything?

I s&f because I am just watching everything that is going on at this time.

Nothing surprises me anymore! I must be in a New York state of mind!

This could not have been a Government anything.. the intelligence level of any government, is less then a gnats on a bad day..

It would have been either a private funded venture, or a government funded contract hit, sheesh .. when will people learn the government is nothing but idiots and hot wind..

Take away their toy's and they would be disparately looking for how to add 2+2..

I wouldn't worry about it, just throw a 1024 or 2048 encryption key into the works, and the "guvment" can go "F" themselves all day long..

The question that's still in my mind: Why does the Wikileak maintenance take so long? Their IRC message still says 'back in a week'. And why would a Wikileaks Insider (if it was one of them who said this) send a whistleblower to Cryptome? I'm sure they know about the sites security (issues)

The person that I was referring to said NOT to send the info to Cryptome stating that the security was not up to par. After that, Cryptome went bye bye, and they are as of yet unsure if some info went missing after the email account hack/site hack.

Wow, looking at a stored web image of Cryptome set off all my virus detection programs. Lost my connection for a bit, and had to reset some settings, but I've obviously fixed it. . .unless of course, Mel Gibson's sitting outside in a taxi singing. . .oh, nevermind.

No, it's strictly opinion. If I was running a govt. agency and wanted information on a certain group of people, the honeypot is how I'd do it.
Hack a website (sloppily on purpose), knowing full well the website will be back and on line in a matter of minutes. But this hack will cause the targeted group of people to go check it out. The hack was only superficial. There's actually a 2nd, 3rd, or more levels to the hack. After the site is back up, I sit back (as fictional head of govt. agency) and collect my information.
Honeypot= cryptome website; flies (targeted group)= whistleblowers, conspiracy theorists, hackers.

Like I said, it's strictly an opinion.

A) Its called TAX PAYERS We have a right to know what they are doing with our money
B) This is a conspiracy site, minding other peoples business is in the T&C so long as you document it
C) My need to know outweighs their right to cover it up

That's sort of why I think it was a 'test run' if you will. See how the public reacts etc. No reaction, no problems. They can obviously take down whatever they want so some random blogger isn't going to be a huge problem. Sites like this only have power when noticed, this one was apparently well known and it's not even in the MSM yet as far as I can tell. Looks like we showed em we dont care.

i agree. this is a dangerous sort of precedent to set. just because good old fashioned hackers hack sites like the riaa and mpaa sites to make a point, doesn't make it okay for the government to hack and shut down sites it deems to be against their agenda. they are the government, if they want to send a message, they have every forum available. they have no place hacking websites. this is bs. this really sucks.

Encyclopedia Dramatica (while fairly amusing) has NOTHING to do with this thread. Isn't it past your bedtime?

the new US cyber warfare department better have a good vetting process for applicants otherwise all it would take is one smart hacker to pretend to be in alignment with the US , then get a job there , start building and implimenting how own virus into their systems and BAM down goes the cyber warfare division

can anyone say ghost in the shell !

Haven't been near Cryptome since the `90's but it was hilariously funny disinfo site back then. My first take on this story was that the hackers were providing a public awareness function. We, well at least the net literate readers are supposed to think server stats and the lack of security for that information. Not that we should trust the Cryptome sys admins much more than the hackers with our menu selection tastes.

So let me guess, when we find out who did it they won't have to go to jail like anyone else who would have done this, because they are part of the government. Great.
