New York state's highest court has struck down the state's capital punishment law in a ruling that has overturned the death sentence of a convicted
murderer.
The State Court of Appeals in Albany, New York, ruled on Thursday in a 4-3 decision that a provision of the law that deals with instructing juries of
the consequences of a deadlock violated the state's constitution.

The Govenor of New York is a conservative Republican; this means he will probably look for a way to reinstate the death penalty and/or correct the
statute. The current State administration believes that it (death penalty) is a deterent to crime.
