Israel navy halts Gaza-bound boat without violence

www.google.com

ASHDOD, Israel — Israeli naval forces seized a sailboat Tuesday carrying nine Jewish activists toward blockaded Gaza without meeting any resistance and then escorted it safely to shore, the military said.

The incident came four months after a deadly Israeli raid on a Turkish-led international flotilla, in which Israeli naval commandos killed nine Turkish activists, one of them a dual Turkish-American citizen.

The sailboat Irene, like the earlier flotilla, was trying to breach Israel's three-year-old naval blockade of the Palestinian territory.

Well they stopped them.

Thank God nobody got hurt this time around.

Now of course comes the non stop rounds of Rhetoric from both sides as they each try to jockey for global public opinion. Here is a bit of the back story.

On Tuesday, a U.N. expert panel investigating the deadly May raid accused Israel of suppressing seized footage from the Turkish-led flotilla.

Israel imposed the blockade in 2007 after the Islamic militant Hamas group seized Gaza, a crowded seaside territory on Israel's southwest corner.

Considering the passengers were Jewish themselves, why would the Israeli Navy attack in the fist place? In other words, why is it surprising or noteworthy that the Navy didn't attack?

I think many are missing the point here. I could be wrong but. It shows the world that many Israelis are getting sick of their own Governments actions. This just drew attention to the growing opposition within Israel itself.

I'm sure many will see it differently.
So be it

#1. I want to reiterate that when sources claim Gaza was seized by Hamas but leave the fact that Hamas was elected Democratically, they have a clear Christian/Jewish Zionist agenda.

#2. There is no number, just the fact that there is a holocaust survivor and a women whose son was killed by a suicide bomber in this boat.

Real people..

The Zionist terrorists must be defeated, peacefully would be great, but let's see how the negotiations go, I predict the usual

When you put it like that, that makes sense as to why it is noteworthy. At least more noteworthy than the point you originally appeared to be making.

However, people who are dissatisfied or disagree with their Government's actions is nothing new either. I for one never hear of it coming from Israel, but I think it's safe to say that that has less to do with internal oppression (a la China or North Korea), and more to do with Israeli anti-Government activism being overshadowed by the seemingly eternal Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

I not surprised that there are some in Israel that are unhappy with how their Government deals with Palestine and other Muslims, but it is no different than us in the US who are unhappy with the imperialist, warmongering policies of our own Government. Hell, I would be willing to bet that there are some Muslims in Palestine who are sick and tired of the back and forth, and disapproving of their Government's actions.

Maybe the typical Westerner doesn't realize this (which is why you might of posted this in the first place) but dissent exists everywhere; even in war-torn countries, and most certainly in oppressed countries as well.

Firstly her necklace was damn ugly..

Second, why the hell would you raid a flotilla at night with live ammunition, filled with activists, then try to defend your actions..

Usual Zionist terrorist jibrish..

They are terrorists and must be held accountable for their crimes, then again the US helped create the UN, the US can destroy it. Watch and learn

I think it's a simple case of the world is watching closely now. Israel have made too many mistakes recently, and plenty of publicity fumbles. The world can only buy the Israeli sob story for so long.

But who knows? It's all very easy to speculate while I sit on my sofa, with my big TV on in the background.

*I deleted the other comment about Israelis changing opinions of their government, because I thought you meant that in relation to the soldiers actions not the activists themselves. Oops

I can't say I disagree with your post. I didn't get a chance to read what you first posted though.

Ha ha I work fast. You didn't miss much, basically just said that the soldiers on the mission wouldn't have changed their opinions of the government, as there would be plenty to replace them who still loved the current administration if they didn't toe the line.

Typical generic throw away comment! Anyway didn't make sense in reading back

Israeli 'Irene' passenger: The IDF were violent on board

An Israeli passenger who was on board the Irene, a boat carrying Jewish activists and aid to Gaza that was intercepted by the IDF on Tuesday, says there was violence on board despite the IDF Spokesperson asserting otherwise.

"There are no words to describe what we went through on that boat, " said Yonatan Shapira, a passenger and former Israeli Air Force pilot.
