Maybe because in none of few actual quotes provided is anything said about anyone being appointed as "contact" for extraterrestrials. Maybe because it's just a bunch of typically sensationalistic tabliodlike distortion.

If you are right and it is a hoax then it is a big one to say the least. But it seems that big hoaxes are the new in thing now days. I still want to see the story on MSN or CNN or some other BIG news out like The AP. We will see.

There are TWO threads on here with the SAME title. Come on people do a search before posting an new thread. The same story and subject is bad enough but the same title now that is too much.

For what it's worth, 2 websites that are not currently reporting this story are the United Nations and the homepage for UNOOSA.

I'm not sure what that means, if anything.

Of note is that Othman was the head of UNOOSA from 99-'02, then went back to Malaysia to head their development of a space program, and was recently brought back to UNOOSA to work on some project regarding international cooperation over space issues.

Still tough to say if there is anything to this story however.

Okay I just SEARCHED the entire United Nations website (www.un.org...), using the name Mazlan Othman, then the following as search terms: extraterrestrial, alien, ET, first contact, NOTHING comes up as she is the First contact Ambassador, so put this into the HOAX column.

You all can do the search too and see for yourself, Ms Othman is the Director of the Office of Outer Space, nothing more.

I do not want the U.N. involved in making contact or appointing anyone to make contact with aliens on behalf of mankind. I would rather see We The people vote on a referendum on who we want as a spokesperson or persons for mankind.

The U.N. would take advantage of the situation and want to have total control of the people and cut deals with the aliens in other words WIIFT- What's IN It For Them. ^Y^

The website of the Telegraph newspaper in the UK has the story about Dr. Mazlan Othman, including the first contact for extraterrestrials angle, so I doubt it is a hoax. There may be something about it on the UN and UNOOSA sites soon. Ross

The title is the headline.... the other story is in breaking news and I wanted to know what the UFO community thought of this.

If you would do a bit of searching yourself you would see that what you have said has already been pointed out! Make sure your gun is loaded, and not with blanks, before shooting it.

OK, put it in the HOAX category, because you can't find anything? It is stated that they are set to announce this, not that it has been announced or finalized. Why would it be in the UN database already, as it has not been finalized???

I know that it does happen, by everyone who who start any amount of threads here, especially when dealing with this subject matter. However I do not EVER seek to perpetrate a hoax and have checked to the best of my ability and have found this seems to be legit, so far.

It would probably serve well to wait until after the announcement is set to be made and do more searching for information to add to the thread before exclaiming hoax.

Looking over the website of UNOOSA, I find no news later than August 26th. The UN site has no releases later than September 25th. I surmise that the former site is infrequently updated, and that at the latter, they take Sunday off. Dr. Othman will speak about her work this coming week in the UK. This should help clarify matters somewhat. Ross

I agree with you. I believe that anything that will come of this will come this week. Hopefully we caught this early enough to be able to follow it throughout the process and can find all the truth that is in the article.

Well all I was saying was the two threads with the SAME title make it hard to tell one from the other one. I was making post in one and then not being about to find them did a search and then found out that there were two threads with the same name. The title of the second thread should have been flaged in some way to show it was a duplicate thread. Maybe some thing like this "U.N. to Appoint Earth Contact for Alien Visitors (duplicate thread)" may have be nice. I was jumping back and forth like mad man trying to find where my post had gone.

I see that the Telegraph newspaper website has now added a short video repeating the main points of the written article about Dr. Othman. One or more other sources yesterday had it that she had already been appointed to the 'first contact' post, but the Telegraph has repeated that the appointment is pending, but apparently considered very likely to go through. Looks like they jumped the gun on this one - the Malaysian in question denies it.

Reports that UN is appointing ET ambassador not true

The link given above, and reputed to deny the appointment of Dr. Mazlan Othman as first contact for extraterrestrials, can not be accessed. It is reported to not be a valid address. Ross

So, The Times of London, The Telegraph, and various other main stream media printed this rather amazing sounding story without troubling to confirm it first? That's rather amazing in itself. I wonder if such multiple examples of journalistic laxity about one particular story, on one particular day could really have occurred. We aren't given the actual question that Dr. Othman responded to in the negative. In the context of the Gaurdian article it sounds as if she might have been denying that she was going to speak about extraterrestrial life in a particular meeting this week, in the UK. I can see an error in reporting of this sort occurring, though it is still isn't admirable. That the essence of this story was made up out of nothing, and this fact went undetected by multiple news organizations, I seriously doubt. Ross
