The constant complaining and fear of the United States becoming "not free" under Obama truly alludes me. What rights of mine have been violated? Am I being beaten on the streets for no reason by police? Are secret police coming into my house and harassing me? No. I'm pretty sure that doesn't happen to any of you either. You could go to the street holding a sign saying the US military are full of queers and that "God hates them" without repercussion. You could also get on Yahoo! and say that you want Obama dead with the same outcome. Is that not freedom?

Was the United States free when only white males could vote? Or only property owners? Or when there were slaves? Or when African-Americans couldn't want down the street without being killed, beaten, or harassed? Is that freedom? I simply do not get it.

I want to know what "free" is to you all.

Well most of the things you say you can do, people have been arrested or bashed for...

Have you not seen the articles about police bashing 94 year old men, tasering grannies and pregnant women, bursting into someones home and shooting them or their dog..

Then theres the "no fly list" that you dont know if or why you are on till you try to board a plane, not to mention the scanners before you get there..

You are filmed everywhere, your phone and emails are scanned.

You can be pulled over in your car for no reason, or even on the street for legally open carrying...

The list of why you are NOT free is endless..

The USA is a free country, and lucky to be free.

I don't understand your question.

If you consider the option that you are not free you simply aren't. In Iraq, USA, UK, Mexico, Russia all of those places I am free. I have freed myself from the mental imprisonment of my mind and that is something no human can take away. (except myself)

What are the specific number of laws in the "land of the free"?

How many laws are there? Am I free when I conform to them all?

rhetorical questions, not even google knows.

So, no country is free.

We have to live with it and get free within our own minds.

Somewhere around 600,000 with umpteen-million ordinances, give or take a few million. Get crackin' on your studies. Ignorance of the law is no excuse!

Oh, well, you said "specific". If Google doesn't know that I'm sure God has himself lost track.

Freedom to me means being able to do anything you want as long as you arent hurting anyone else. In my opinion any society with as many laws as we have is not truly free. We are fortunate compared to some other countries around the world, but then there are others with less restrictions than here. Freedom can have different meanings to different people so it is simply a matter of opinion.

You know, it is easy to use one's own experience and extrapolate it so that in one's mind one's own truth becomes the truth of everyone. But this is flawed logic and leads to erroneous conclusions.

You believe America is free? Why then do you pay so many taxes? Are you aware that the Federal Reserve isn't Federal? It's a cartel of private zionist bankers, who many years ago deceived the Amerian people by persuading the then Government to hand over to them - and I repeat these are private, commercial, zionist bankers - the authority to print America's money. So, now they create money out of thin air and lend it to the US government at heavy interest rates. Because of this, most of the income tax paid by Americans goes only to pay the interest ALONE on the money 'owed' to these private, criminal, zionist bankers.

Without this huge scam which defrauds the American people, there would be very, very few taxes to pay.

Now, currently, how many days of the year does the average US citizen work to pay off their total taxes?
Typically, about 5 months of the year. The largest part of that goes straight into the pockets of the banksters, called the Federal Reserve, which is neither Federal nor has any Reserves.

So, for at least five months of the year, you are slave labour to the filthy rich criminal, private, zionist banksters.

Try not paying your income tax to this Zionist mafia and see how free you are, see whether you are free or whether you are a slave.

Then read Mary Croft's book: How I clobbered every beaurocratic cash-confiscatory agency known to man.
Free download: www.hackcanada.com...

Next, put to one side the 'I'm alright Jack' mentality and look around you. Look at the documented, serious increase in police brutality. Look at the increased abuse of tasers. Look at the way whistleblowers are attacked and silenced....free speech? It's a myth.

Then look at the MSM, and see that all the news agencies are owned and controlled by zionists. Search on the internet and it's easy to see all the news never given the mainstream channels, Start to think instead of following the mainstream propaganda herd, and you will see that the mainstream news channels are simply mouthpieces to spread zionist deceit. You are not free to receive the real news.

Then do some research on patents for things like free energy, see how they have been suppressed by the zionist corporates. You could have free energy, but that wouldn't make the zionist mafia billions of dollars, so it is suppressed, and worse. See how many inventors of such things have been attacked, threatened and even killed.

Then read: The Truth, The Zionist Hidden Tyranny. This is available on many internet sites, one of which is: the-truth-is-freedom.blogspot.com... You need to be aware that this has been called a hoax by some. Make up your own mind after reading this interview transcript. Look around, see for yourself whether you can observe any of this in US society and government, and in world government. Make up your own mind.

This information is just the tip of a very big iceberg, but it's an introduction.

Having done all this, you will be able to answer your own question, you will then be able to decide whether you still consider yourself to be free.

People believe they are free because the government propaganda machine is always telling them America is the land of the free.

Start to observe and think for yourselves and you will see what the government's concept of your 'freedom' really is.

I am not free to own land. I know they say I own my land, but its not really mine. I am not free to build what ever I want on it with out permits and red tape. If I don't pay my taxes or insurance it is no longer my land all though it is full paid for. If I die, it doesn't automatically go to my kids.

I am still bitter about that too, since that realization was what woke me up to how unfree I really was.

Honestly this alarm has little to nothing to do with president Obama; it has been raised from time to time in the past. The reason for concern over him more than others past is due to his own admissions...read his book.

What rights of mine have been violated? Am I being beaten on the streets for no reason by police?.....

In answer, let me ask you this: Does it really have to get that bad before you will be willing to do something about it?
Also, no this has absolutely nothing to do with race. I wonder why some folk always assume that is does....

The reason it is not readily obvious to all, that is how your liberty has slowly been stripped from you, is much akin to a "slowly boiled frog". It is the ever-so-slow "one step forward, two steps back" approach that has done us in.

In closing, as more proof that this is not anywhere near a "new" trend, here are the lyrics from the song "Eye of the Beholder", written twenty-two years or so ago.

"Do you see what I see?
Truth is an offense
You silence for your confidence

Do you hear what I hear?
Doors are slimming shut
Limit your imagination, keep you where they must

Do you feel what I feel?
Bittering distress
Who decides what you express?

Do you take what I take?
Endurance is the word
Moving back instead of forward seems to me absurd

Doesn't matter what you see
Or into it what you read
You can do it your own way
If it's done how I say

Independence limited
Freedom of choice is made for you my friend
Freedom of speech is words that they will bend
Freedom with their exception

Do you fear what I fear?
Living properly
Truths to you are lies to me

Do you choose what I choose?
More alternatives
Energy derives from both the plus and negative

Do you need what I need?
Boundaries overthrown
Look inside, to each his own....

Do you trust what I trust?
Me, myself and I
Penetrate the smoke screen, I see through the selfish lie

Doesn't matter what you see
Or into it what you read
You can do it your own way
If it's done how I say

Independence limited
Freedom of choice is made for you my friend
Freedom of speech is words that they will bend
Freedom with their exception

Do you know what I know?
Your money and your wealth
You silence just to hear yourself

Do you want what I want?
Desire not a thing
I hunger after independence, lengthen freedom's ring!

Doesn't matter what you see
Or into it what you read
You can do it your own way
If it's done how I say

Independence limited
Freedom of choice is made for you my friend
Freedom of speech is words that they will bend
Freedom no longer frees you!"

Others have mentioned these components.

Over 600,000 statutes.

You need a license to do things that are legal, like marrying, traveling, doing business, etc.

Individual property rights. You are not allowed to own property, you are allowed to lease it. Hence the taxation on property and things like registration. YOU DO NOT even own, your very self. Your labor is taxed. Labor is NOT an income. Income is defined as profit made on an asset sold. You do not SELL your labor. You trade it for currency at it's actual value. Tell me, as a person can you incorporate yourself so that all of your expenses like food, clothing, living quarters are deducted from your "income"? Of course not, your "income" is taxed on the gross wages, not actual net income.

Also, if a corporation commits fraud or other crimes, the actual "people" that have committed the crime are protected because of their corporate status. They do not go to jail, they get fined.

Only those that can see the bars of their prison realize they are not free.

Red or blue pill. Your choice.

I thought that laws restricts freedom. If you obey laws that restrict freedom, how can you call yourself free? Perhaps a stupid question, but a valid one.

well the idea that Obama as a singular person is running the show and diminishing the freedoms of americans is not sure. obama is sort of a figure head, he's there because people seem to adore him, and as long as people are happy and not questioning their government, or what their government is doing, that's all that matters. that is the role of obama.

behind the closed doors, there are secret societies like the freemasons, skull and bones, bohemian grove.. the list goes on because with so many secret societies it's harder for someone to figure out just how powerful the 'men behind the curtains' really are. these are the people running the show. frankily, they could care less about wether you have freedom or not. in the end they just need to make sure that their desires are met, that is the bottom line. unfortunately that usually means manipulating the masses through various media and broadcast systems, infiltrating the government via questionable elections.

the bottom line is, when they get what they want, they relax and give leeway and the masses can get a little bit of freedom ( for example 1990 - 1999 ) but when they start to realize that society is beginning to either grow out of their control or whatever it is that they need is about to escape from them, they have to implement means to control the masses so that their own personal will is the only one being accomplished ( such as 2001 september false falg, initiating a war thousands of miles away, tying up money and diverting the eyes of a whole country, allowing the freedom of information act to be passed unnoticed .. expensive oversea war that costs an already hurting economy two arms and two legs, thus the masses have no more time to think too hard about things on a daily basis, they are struggling hard enough making ends meet in their own life - they don't have the time OR the energy to spend occupying thoughts or actions that might go against these secret societies desires )

i could go on, but this is a conspiracy site, everything i've said has already been elaborated here even better than i can word it, don't rely on the responses to this thread to answer your original question: instead, spend some time searching through ats, look at some of the well written threads, old and new, documenting the decline of america "land of the free"

Freedom is a myth. It only truly exists relative to your own experience. Otherwise, it is an empty, maleable political term bandied about with numerous meanings.

Is America "free"? By what definition? Relative to a less-'free' place? Like maybe, North Korea? Or compared to the freedom you experience deep in the wilderness?

let us talk about this 'freedom' and find out for ourselves what it means.

Absolute freedom is anarchy and is a misuse of terminology. We are Constitutionally promised liberty, not freedom. Being engaged in society is not slavery. We pay for the right to be part of something more than our own labors could create.

I'm no fan of over governance but I do enjoy paved roads, being able to call 911 when something goes horribly wrong, and knowing that there's an emergency room down the street to deal with things that would outright kill me in a truly free world.

As somebody above suggested, there is a giant rain forest in South America where people can still find utter and total freedom. The problem is that most of us wouldn't survive a week in absolute freedom and those of us who could really don't relish the thought.
