I was unaware of these flying platforms and how long they have been around.
I followed your link and watched a bunch of videos on them.

They are seem extremely stable (the ones with jet engines)

Waiting for the original footage.....

Ok I found the guys original footage, I asked him to join us here as well if he would like to answer more questions or whatever. I also asked if he would send me the clip of his footage, but I dont think it is going ot be much different then this below. The good thing about this clip is it shows the barge come into play without being cut to it. I think that changes it a little bit as well.

So now, we have this new clip and if you missed it from before, his own quote:

Just gotta put Sneakyset right!! The boat was doing 30 kph. 30 minutes out of Noumea, Decent chop on the sea. (Watch the barge take one over the rail). Distance to the objects were over 1.5 kms. You would be pushed to see kite surfers at the distance. Estimated height of objects ..around two storeys plus. Objects went into the wind. of 30 knots... no wash, no wake. Why is the video shaky? Coz I'm 70 next year and our cabin was 80 feet above the sea with a strong wind.

Just when did they start fitting barges with fins??? Look closer. That isn't a barge.

I cant claim to know a lot about barges with or without fins, Ill leave that to the others around here to check out. The barge or whatever it is really isnt my concern anyway. It is the other objects. Im just happy to see the barge being a part of the whole picture now to see things like speed and direction etc.

I am also curious how these can now still be kite surfers if the gentleman says these objects are estimated to be over 2 stories tall if not more? 30knots is a pretty strong wind isnt it?

I wanna believe... but something tells me that this guy is filming a military naval exercise... or their playtime after it's all over and done with. Just a hunch...

I could play along with that idea except I would think anything above the water would have to be attached to something below the water, so to me there would have to be a wake where the above meets the below. The extension piece should be breaking the water. I don't see any of that.

Well... you're definitely right about the missing wake. Perhaps if what's above the surface is attached to an extension piece that's attached to something bigger several feet below the surface... are we close enough to even detect a wake???... or an extension piece for that matter???

I cant imagine what could be so small to not make a wake be able to hold up something above water thats over two stories high.

I notice that at the point the moving object draws level with the headland there is no sea between the headland and the object, right after that there is a big sea gap. It suggests that the moving object did a very fast tack in the direction of the cruise ship and the camera, and then recontinued travel towards the right. The speed of that manouevre also could suggest there is no water drag. To yigsstarhouse, thanks for your interest. I do have a question for the cameraman, was the the cruise ship about to dock, or maybe turning right round before docking, although with the given speed it is unlikely.

A kite is not "held up" by what is below it. In fact, it works the other way. A kite lifts what is below it.

Kiteboards don't leave much of a wake even when they are on the water. But at a couple of points in the video I think I just can make out some splashes beneath the kites, in spite of the poor lighting and video quality.

Personally I think they might be balloons

Ok I might buy that, but just how big Are the Kites as a rule? How tall are they? Are they over 2 stories tall?

I will be sure to ask him that question. We might get lucky and he may come here. I did invite him and gave him the link.

I also wanted to say I also noticed what you just pointed out. That was a pretty fast clip or burst of speed there wasn't it? Nice catch

Where does "2 stories tall" come from?

2 stories tall? What do you mean? 20 feet above the water? Yes.
20 wide? They can be pretty close.

Once I will quote again what the gentleman that filmed it had to say himself. This is where I got it from:

Yes, well. The ability to judge the distance (and size) of an object of unknown size is notoriously unreliable. But board kites are quite visible at a distance of less than a mile (1.5km). Their riders less so (particularly in low light).

That's why know exactly where this was filmed is important, because if it was on the place I posted before (this one) then I don't think they were that far away.

Hi Armap,
The videoman just says 30 minutes out of Noumea, whether that means incoming or outgoing I'm not sure, but the cruise terminal is Moselle. So, either way there is about 9,10 miles travelling distance, that is going by a 30 kilometres per hour speed.

One other thought I have, is that there may be cable-laying ongoing in Noumea, and that the moving object is a marker of some sort, and that the "barge" has a role. Maybe a GPS sensor for information feedback on currents or whatever. There is or was, fibre, or rather fibre-optic cable-laying going on there recently. 12/09/10 may be one of those dates.
