Me too!

But I'm having trouble with the file size...
[atsimg]http://files.abovetopsecret.com/images/member/bfcee9225e30.jpg[/atsimg]

How do you get the image to have a slider bar at the bottom?

Yeah, it is really hard to get it near 60KB. I've got mine at 64.8KB and it looks good, is that small enough?

There are many hints and tips to get the file size of JPEGs under control. For these images, try...

(1) Blurring anything in your image in the shadowed area in the center (where content will be), the more heavily you blur it, the easier the image will be to compress. No one will see it, except when the page loads, so it's not important for it to be crisp.

(2) Try blurring everything below 600 pixels from the top (with a gradual blur, maybe a brush), or even design your image to rely on a blur in the bottom 1/3.

(3) Avoid sharp edges or areas of high contrast

REQUIREMENTS:

(1) Do not reposition the logo or top black-bar
Understood, leave that layer alone.

(2) Do not reposition the deny ignorance text, or the "credit" text
Understood, leave that layer alone

(3) Keep the text subtle, not a bright white
Replace your label of ats 2010 skin by skeptic overlord with our own label? Correct? Also, do you want the font to be the same. I will need to find a font download.

(4) The bottom fade and central shadow must remain
Understood, leave this layer alone

(5) The file size as a JPEG cannot exceed 60k
Now, I just tried to save your file as a standard quality high level 8 and it comes to 126.6k if I change to baseline optimized or progressive it is still above 100k If I lower your skin to the lowest quality, then it comes in under the 60k. Hmmm, wondering if I am doing something wrong here?

(6) Any artwork you use must belong to you, or is material you have the rights to use
Understood

(7) We prefer beautiful abstractions, but compelling imagery (that is beautiful) that matches ATS topics will certainly be considered
Understood

(8) Make sure you give yourself credit
Change the credit line

Very, very helpful. I will try your advice and edit this post shortly to add my image.

EDIT: I blurred the image a little, and saved it as the lowest medium quality - 5. It came out as 62.4KB! Surely that must be close enough...I guess I could try blurring it a bit more if it's absolutely essential that it be 60KB or under.

I clicked on the link and got the background image but not in layers. I dont have photoshop, I use photoplus x3. Would it be possible to give us links to the layers individually.. the logos, the central colour, bottom fade. etc.

Ive sorted it lol. Saved the file and found out the software I use does open psd files, so now I have all the layers.

Instruction manuals are amazing things.

Try what SO said about blurring the part which wont be visible, it can take a large chunk of the size. Even try blurring your whole image a little and save it as a lower quality.

you need to save for web and devices in photoshop not just save as
and there make sure you use jpg and you can regulate the quality and it is easy to get it below 60 kb

Wow, you're a genius, I can't believe I didn't know that. You learn something knew every day. I was able to get my image down to 55.6KB and it looks better than before. Thanks.

PS - I love your avatar, that is awesome.

Hopefully my final version:

Hi,

Don't know anything about skins, I'm so not a techie, but just wanted to say that I love the skins you've been using, especially those beautiful colours in the lights across the sky.

Also love the new text box, which is a great improvement and much more user friendly.

One thing I liked better the old way was that there were three headlines on the home page. I preferred that - it's good to see a choice!

Many thanks for the new look, it's great.

Great idea SO, you know this is right up my street.

Check the link in my profile for some of my abstract "fractal" illustrations, is that the kind of thing you're after but geared to fit the page content?

Will also be firing up the old CS4.

Nice one!

Helvetica is a commercial font and not generally available. Why are you using commercial fonts?

I haven't finished reading this thread yet but - Photoshop???? Do you think we are all made of money or what?

Why not a Paintshop Pro or Paint.NET template? I would love to have a go at this but I cannot afford Photoshop (nor would I either)

Well this looks like fun if I could figure out how to even use my photoshop

Can I save the pic and use it in another program and make my own?

BTW I like the pinkish one that is up right now, it also has some purple in it.

Yeah, would love to do this too. But why then it is only available as psd?
Could you bring a template for paint.net up?

Peace
