Hey everyone! I live in Panama City, Florida. I know we have Tyndall AFB and the NCSS (naval coastal systems station) here in panama city, as well as norad I'm pretty sure, but what else is around here (what secret facilities?) Thanks!

edit: if there is no secret facility in NW FL, what is the closest facility to Panama City?

Well, as far as norad, I don't know.. from what I heard it's not like Cheyenne Mountain, of course, but it's supposed to be a small facility, I don't know exactly. My dad is a network engineer and did some computer work for them, and was escorted through the complex by men with guns. He was told to turn his head and not look in certain areas. I could be wrong though. I could be mistaken by what he told me. Who knows.
That's cool about your family living here!

All kinds of interesting things happen around Pensacola, Eglin AFB and Pensacola Naval Air Station. I have spent a lot of time in the Perdido/Gulf Breeze/Pensacola area, and have seen everything from F-22's flying along the coast to late-night parachute exercises. In the summer of 2000 my wife & I took turns with binoculars and watched a Navy helicopter dropping what I guessed were sonobuoys as we ate breakfast on our balcony.

There are a ton of active bases, bombing ranges, etc. in the area.

Just to be the devils-advocate, what classifies as a secret base? Area 51?

Area 51 is probably the least secret base in North America. What is secret is not the military bases themselves, but what goes on in them. As I also stated in my previous post, if they are truly secret, we wouldn't know about them.

Finally, I think the best we can do is point the member to the bases that are located in Florida and let him/her complete the research by determining what goes on at each.

Actually my original post was are there any "secret" facilities.... and if you'll notice, "secret" is written with quotations around it, to specify that I'm asking if there are any facilities that are SUPPOSED to be secret, that the government would LIKE to be secret.. but are known about. That's ok, though, I understand that you didn't realize how I was wording it and how it was supposed to be taken. Obviously area 51 is not secret anymore, but there are places I don't know of, in Florida, and I was wondering if any of these places were near me. As for searching on google.. well, yes, I could easily search on google. I simply chose not to because I didn't want a mess of search results about secret facilities in Florida, and all of the other results that would have come up non-relating to the topic. I wanted to ask people who I thought knew about the subject! I stumbled on this sight. Wasn't really even looking for it. I simply had typed in "secret hospitals" and was somehow led to this sight. Anyway, so that's the deal.

edit: thanks for all of the info, though, and websites...

Yes there is. Search and ye shall receive:

Excerpt:
Three regions, two countries, one team.

Responsible for protecting the airspace of two vast countries, North American Aerospace Defense Command's area of responsibility stretches from Clear, Alaska, to the Florida Keys, and from St. John's Newfoundland, to San Diego, Calif. Thousands of U.S. and Canadian military members have worked side-by-side in both countries for more than 40 years to protect North America against an aerospace attack. Aerospace warning and control are the cornerstones of the NORAD mission.

To perform its twin missions of aerospace warning and aerospace control, NORAD consists of three regions: Alaskan NORAD Region (ANR), Canadian NORAD Region (CANR), and the Continental U.S. NORAD Region (CONR).

CONR is further broken into three sectors: Western Air Defense Sector at McChord AFB, Wash.; Northeast Air Defense Sector at Rome, N.Y.; and Southeast Air Defense Sector at Tyndall AFB, Fla., which is also the headquarters for CONR.

CANR's headquarters is in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and the Canadian Air Defence Sector is located in North Bay, Ontario. ANR's headquarters is located at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska, adjacent to Anchorage.

There are two Navy bases in Pensacola.

There is NAS Pensacola, most famous for training new OCS officers (remember the movie "An Officer and a Gentleman"? - that was NAS Pensacola). It is also the base where new naval aviators receive primary flight training.

There is also NTTC Corry Station, which used to be Corry Field back in WWII. It was converted into a training facility in the 1970's. ALl the hangers were reconfigured as schools, and alot of infrastructure was added. This is where all Navy electronic warfare and cryptological training takes place.
