Soap was my second. And I almost listed it as first.

It truly changed the world we live in. It made living in a society or civilization sanitary.

Flat bread...pita or noun.
A utinsile before knives, forks, and spoons were invented.
It was and is the perfect absorber of sauce, and stews. Has helped billions enjoy life and survive environmental pressures such as famine, disease, etc..
Good luck finding them at McDs...

A significant part of early Christianity too...the Lords Super.

I think the wheel is an invention so easy to think up that it only deserves praise as being a great invention because of the benefits of such a simple design, good invention, but I don't think it deserves greatest invention for the simple fact anyone could have thought it up, simple logic.

The greatest invention ever should be something very complicated to think up and very effective in it's design and purpose.

I am going to say "TRANSPORT" Why?

Well in the beginning all we had was our feet. Not bad for visiting the relatives or catching the odd rabbit, but hardly feasable to travel long distances.

Next we tamed animals to ride, horses being the most common..
This allowed us to travel greater distances and share ideas with more people.
Then came the wheel, well that really opened it up..
Now we could not only travel long distances but also take supplies and even move house over longer distances, settling distant lands.
Next was the boat..Yes there had been early boats but now they were mopre modern and could travel across oceans, again sharing ideas and knowledge with foreign lands.
Since then, trains, planes and automobiles have increased the pace of knowledge sharing..

Without transport, where would we be today?
Still living in our little villages unaware of all the different people, continents and knowledge that exists...

Mathematics. Without it we wouldn't be where we are today.

I would think the pulley is just as important as the wheel (as the wheel basically evolved from it). Without it man would never have had the ability to lift heavy objects and build large structures such as the pyramids....which are still around today.

SCIENCE!!!

Quoting Socrates:

“Writing destroys memory and weakens the mind, relieving it of…work that makes it strong. It is an inhuman thing.”

And one more quote from my favorite movie Donnie Darko to add my answer to the OP:

GRETCHEN
I should go. For physics. Monnitoff says
I have to write an essay on the greatest
invention ever to benefit mankind.

DONNIE
That's easy. Antiseptics.

She gives him a look.

DONNIE (cont'd)
I mean, the whole sanitation thing.
Joseph Lister... 1895. Before antiseptics
there was no sanitation, especially in
medicine.

GRETCHEN
You mean soap?

DONNIE
Don't knock soap. Without it, disease
would spread rapidly. If we ran out...
you and I would never live to see the
year 2000.

I could choose from many different inventions, but all of them would be by Nickola Tesla. So I'll just pick the best inventor rather than the best invention.

EDIT: Sure this has been posted many times, but here it is again:

My asthma inhaler. I have once been in a situation where I didn't have it with me and had a severe asthma attack...It nearly got me killed.. So that makes you appreciate the little device a lot..

But since it's a pick for humanity, and most of us have no need for asthma inhalers
lol.. I will pick the microscope. The microscope was very important in the discovery of many dissease causing bugs and the effects of medication on them.

That's pretty obvious.

It's the Shamwow. It holds 21 times its weight in liquid. Use it around the house, on clothing, on the car, on the boat, on the RV, use it as a spare towel. I say wow every time!

My choice is Fire in your pocket ... a simple lighter.

As previous reply implies. Various fire ignition methods are the greatest inventions ever. Then comes the various ways of using the fire. Without it, there propably wouldn't be much of the rest. Although good inventions presented here.

Electricity. It wasn't something invented, but discovered. Therefore, the generator.

It has a part in producing practically every single invention on this thread.
