The single greatest invention ever in the history of mankind was when he learned to create and control fire. Nothing else ever comes close to it.

Thinking - greatest invention was when we learned to think.
Without thinking all other inventions could not be conceived

The wheel, for without it in some shape or form nothing would function.
Closely followed by man's ability to make fire.

Alcohol.
Makes everything else bearable.

My other choice would be Art and Music.
But as someone once famouslly said:

"For art to exist, for any sort of aesthetic activity to exist, a certain physiological precondition is indispensable: intoxication."

otherwise it would be curtains for us all.

The printing press.

Before the printing press... knowledge about pretty much everything was reserved to the elites.

The scientific method, before it was even named as such.

All that we have done has come from experimentation
and learning what works and what does not.

The invention of money, value, property or worth. As this led onto greed, which has driven man (since the beginning) to explore every avenue of exploitation. By the time that ran out, we were smart enough to invent new one's for the gullible populace of the human race.

SCIENCE!!!

The written language is my choice as well. Without the ability to communicate precise concepts to future generations, most, if not all, other inventions would have been lost over time. It's a no-brainer. Easter Island is a good example. We see the statues there, but because they had no written language, we don't know who made them, how, or why.
