An incredible link to a live radio broadcast for the region was provided by another ATS member from New Zealand over on the Quake Watch 2010 thread.

Listening to live reports of a lot of destruction, bridges unstable and damaged, instructions on boiling water, a lot of sewage issues throughout the region. Also mention of concern because this quake was not along the major fault line, rather an offshoot of the one that they are believe might cause their 'Big one' some time. Casualty reports starting to come in. Live aftershock reports are rattling nerves there.

You'll know as much as anyone does.

Sounds like sewege system breakdown in New Brighton may cause evacuation there

Earlier two seperate people who were in San Francisco 1989 quake said this was stronger
Also liquification in the eastern suburbs, sand volcanos etc

I felt it quite strongly on the west coast of the south island, NZ. Shook the room up. I think it was a 7.2 in Christchurch - thats a biggie. Quite a bit of damage caused in the CBD from what I have seen on the news here.

The aftershocks are more spread out now, but they are very violent and sudden.

TV states that some suburbs, especially Brooklands may be evacuated due to Sewage Water flooding up throught the ground.

For anyone not familiar with Christchurch, it is a very low lying, flat city next to the ocean.

Many areas are quite prone to flooding etc.

lol, thanks tortoise!!

Its big shame indeed for the city. Christchurch is a beautiful place. I've lived here for 6yrs and I would never leave now.

Not going to be an overnight fix for sure.

just dived under the table again.

WTF is going on in NZ?? That kind of quake is unheard of in NZ. They are volcanic islands, but EQ's?? Nuts!!

State of emergency??? Cheeesus... is it that bad? I suppose it's like the Tornado we had here in Vaughan, Toronto. Destroyed houses completely, and even more damage. Toronto is not known for Tornado's, but it happens.

Looks like Christchurch got hit hard! Those buildings are decimated. I hope there are no fatalities... They say there aren't, but these pics make me think otherwise.
