You know, isnt it all a bit moot this subject? We all know that the only thing seperating an effective armed force and an ineffective armed force is training. You can get a bunch of blade wielding nut jobs to slay ten times thier number of teched up desk jockeys as long as you train them well enough !
I couldnt give a damned what vehicle our soldiers and marines get where they are going on, as long as they are trained to be the most impregnable living things on the earth , trained to the point where no target is beyond the reach of destruction for them. That is important. Everything else is logistics.

By the time these two carriers are actually completed and in service, will they still be state of the art, or will they be obsolete?

Aside from the fact they are gas powered not nuclear (to keep costs down) these will be the most powerful and largest warships ever constructed in the UK. They will be state of the art.

Ah, come on Fred. Are you sure you're not over reacting? A bit of tongue in cheek 'Yank baiting' by a Canadian neighbour?

Australian War in the Pacific WWII

In 1942 the Australian military was reinforced by units recalled from the Middle East and an expansion of the CMF and RAAF. United States Military units also arrived in Australia in great numbers before being deployed to New Guinea. The Allies moved onto the offensive in late 1942, with the pace of advance accelerating in 1943. From 1944 the Australian military was mainly relegated to subsidiary roles, but continued to conduct large-scale operations until the end of the war.[70]

When was the last time France and UK were at war ? In the days of Napoleon, 200 years ago ?

While some of you were busy swearing, the world has changed, we have the telegraph now.

Well, the Entente Cordial wasn't signed until 1904 and up to that point, France and the UK had been colonial rivals and had skirmished quite frequently.

And look at how De Gaulle, his cronies and those that have followed him have repaid us for saving their arses in two world wars!

I have no trust whatsoever for The French, sorry if that upsets some people....and I very much doubt they have any trust in us...just the way it is.

This can not happen.
We can not ignore a thousand years of warfare, confrontation and mutual enmity!
We can not give up our ability to independantly defend ourselves.

The only nations we should ever consider sharing something like this with are those we know we can trust; Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

I doubt the accuracy of this report and suspect there maybe an element of sensationalism involved here.

I would like to add that Nelson will be spinning in his grave.

I'd love to hear what Prince Philip says to the Queen about sharing boats with the French

That's a whole new perspective then... I do understand now.

We reaaaaally need to be kept divided. In western Europe, we are as close as we could possibly be. We live the same lives and face the same problems. By we, I mean the people not the governments.
We must never unite and be fed with stereotypes, let be suspicious of strangers. Germans are militaristic, Italians are robbers and liars, French are cowards. We live in chaotic times, you never know what could happen, France could try to invade Britain

That's an anglo-american perspective, the one you were raised with. I was raised with another. It doesn't make mine better or more acurate. It only shows people are monitored by educational tools and accepted social behaviour. We are told what to think.

How do you explain the shared underlying general perception of the French by the English ? And of the English by the French ? And that, of course, they are extremely different ? Are the ones absolutely wrong and the others absolutely right ?

It's American nothing!
It's this Englishman's opinion based on history.

Of course it's a generalisation and I would try to treat any individual with manners and respect.

But De Gaulle hated us and felt shame at having to seek safe haven here and that we had to liberate his country for him.
The French have nothing but contempt for British society and culture, resent English being THE international language and sincerely believe that they have a divine right to be THE pre-eminent nation, people and culture in the world.

We think The French smell, can't fight and have a vastly over rated opinion of themselves and their culture.
However, their wine is quite nice.
Paris stinks and is far too expensive.
French women don't shave their necessary bits.
Vanessa Paradis is allright though.
French men are all unfaithful, want to shag our wives but are crap in bed!
French films are too serious.
French footballers cheat, but Eric Cantona is one of the greatest footballers ever.
French food is reasonably ok but not as nice as they think it is and you don't get enough.
They think the EU is their own tool to be used to screw the UK over on every available opportunity.

I could go on for ever, but I fear I may have gone slightly off topic and I don't want to upset anyone really.

It's a common Englishman's perspective based on anglo-american constructed collective memory. Nothing special, nothing you had to think hard about. You were bred with it without you even knowing. You are the docile product of your social environment.
Based on history ? What is the historical event or fact that shows De Gaulle hated you for a start ? Do you resent De Gaulle defending French interests before British ones ?

So I take it you don't think sharing carriers with them is a good idea?

(which bits don't they shave?)

they should have gotten used to it ages ago ,
here in finland we ve had "official" EU and nato troops training since the first days of EU recognition,

being in EU it realy doesnt matter if your a finn or italian , if there s a "war" in bulgary we have to go there together,..

my point is we can fight EU for the next 100years+ without any real success or we can make it even something the founding fathers didnt take in to concideration..

but truth be told feels a bit wierd that hundres of million lives have been spilt due to sovereign nations and now we should forget thouse lives,,,,

whats next syndicalist fasism within separatist nations,..

Reminds me of the story about why the new french navy ships all have glass bottoms ...

So they can see the old french navy, of course ...

Along with the story about cheap surplus french army rifles for sale ...

Never fired and only dropped once.
