Senecas Vote To Withhold Casino Revenue Payment To the State

www.wgrz.com

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Seneca Nation tribal leaders voted Monday night to withhold the state's casino revenue payment saying the the "state has violated terms of the 2001 Gaming Compact which allowed the Nation to establish Class III casinos".

Asked if this is in direct response to the state's insistence to collect taxes on cigarettes, Tribal Counselor JC Seneca replied they had been considering this action previously, but say it's unlikely they would have passed it tonight if the state hadn't insisted on collecting the tax.

I don't know how many people here at ATS are from NY state or western NY. But this in my opinion is a situation to keep your eye on. What really gets me is some of the other articles that have been posted locally, quote the governor as saying he expects violence and possible deaths as a result of what they are trying to do. All over taxes, how greedy politicians have all become, they are willing to wage war for more tax $$$. Disgusting.

They can go after the Amerind's without worry. The People will not even flinch. They are dark skinned, and therefore close enough. Just put some more Snooki on TV, and make sure that the Kardashian's keep shaking their ass for our entertainment. The blood that will be spilled in New York over taxes will, like Ruby Ridge, be spun against the "offenders", and The People will just nod in approval and take another sip off their beer.

It's a damn shame. I give my moral support to the Seneca Nation. I just hope that honor is not sacrificed. By either side.

You are neglecting to take into account that many of us cannot enjoy watching Snooki without or cigarettes. Many of us are addicted and feel a little unevenly burdened when it comes to taxes. Many of us actually rely on the Seneca nation being able to do what they do. That means many of us will pretend to care about the plight of the natives if only to save us 6 bucks a pack of smokes.

Well there are many legal loopholes that will have to be looked at imagine. What I have always wondered can the state government legally start a war with a sovereign nation within it? Or is that something that has to be decided on at a federal level? Because that is what this could escalate to in my opinion. They have tried to do this in the past unsuccessfully. It just goes to show you who & what big brother is concerned about as usual. And NYS is full of some greedy crooked politicians, sometimes I wonder if they send them here to train them!!! Hopefully enough people around the country hear about this and voice their opinion and support for the Natives. Weather your a smoker or nonsmoker this is about them being able to tax more and more and nothing being safe from the tax man. I love how they are going to erect a toll booth on the state thruway that runs through their land, and how they could also effect the trains whose tracks pass through there also. Peacefully if possible but I'm sure that the big headed state troopers will provoke something and all hell will break loose.

My sister in law buys all her smokes on the reservation as she lives near Batavia. I can't believe the freakin taxes - $4.35 per pack!
When I started smoking you could buy a whole carton for that.
Patterson sounds like he is threatening the Seneca which would be a HUGE mistake. You don't just take on the Seneca, but all the Iroquois tribes, Cayuga, Onandoga, Oneida, Mohawk.
The whole state would be in chaos.
I hope the governor is neither that stupid or greedy.
The People of the Longhouse stick together.
If real trouble starts I will be joining my brothers upstate.

PS - wth is Snookie?

I am not familiar with the particular case, but it seems like the reservation is risking the huge revenue tied to gaming in exchange for the tax they could just add into the value of cigarettes. Not to hurt anyones feelings, but I am pretty sure that the reservations could not bring enough weight to bear. It might be better to handle this situation in a legal forum.

So they're charging taxes to the natives now for ciggys? Is that what it's saying? I'm not shocked NYS would do this, and I hope the natives stand firm on the issue.

As of September 1 the new law goes into effect. Or thats when they will try to put it into effect.

Honestly, in my personal opinion, I feel that the money should go to the res or community in which the casino is a part of. The income was meant for the Native people and that is where is should go.

I think the money should go to the people, too. Also, it would be a stupid mistake to provoke them. Not only will natives from NY join in the fight, but all over the country. It'll be like back in the 60s and 70s. But with more guns. I wish the Seneca luck.

This doesn`t surprise me at all. Your going to see more and more of these types of things with other states as well. It`s the old thing of, why should we cut back on state run programs, when we can just tax everyone to death, or to the point of war to keep them funded. Funny, as tax payers, we have to cut back on things we all like, just to have money enough to pay for the necessities of life, but the states or federal government doesn`t have to give an inch. Gee, maybe we all should let both the state and federal governments know we are done doing without, just to keep their freeloading, money grubbing little programs going. It`s time they are the ones made to cut back on the things they like.

They keep it up, and one day the people will let them know the hard way, how they all feel about the fiscal stupidity that they have been showing not only us, but the world.

Governor Blinky has a very short memory apprently because he seems to be forgetting the last time NY and Vermont pissed off the Mohawks up near St. Regis and a Vt. National Guard chopper got shot down by the Mohawks. This was only 20 years ago. The Haudenosaunee do not # around.

To me it seems that Governor Patterson is committing an act of terrorism. Especially since he has the knowledge that people could get injured or killed over this dispute. He openly admitted to that. Yet he still wants to pursue his agenda, which I think is totally irresponsible. If anyone is harmed because of this I think he should be brought up on charges.

I'll have to look into it over here. I am in Wisconsin and we are close to the Oneidas - they also do the Casino and we buy cigarettes from them 4.85 per pack vs. 6.95 in the stores - I think the Indians would have a very valid gripe if we try to impose our rules and regulations on them.

I do think the cigarettes are a scam, though...but they are also perpetrated by Big Tobacco. And let's not forget that organised crime is a huge concern, especially on the border reserves. I think the balance is to show a status card to buy those cheap smokes.

The casinos? That's just revenge upon the white folks.

So they made a temporary ruling that only applies to the Seneca nation and Cayuga nation. I'm guessing the main reason behind that is because the NYS thruway 90 runs across their reservations and they know that a holiday is fast approaching and figured we will wait 14 days to tell them they have to pay up. Seeing as the Tuscarora nation is not in that position looks like they are gonna get screwed.

If anyone is still interested nothing major to report on yet seems they are dragging their feet as usual after making all sorts of threats. Kinda funny no input from the politicians here or anywhere far as I have seen.
