Hey Muzzy - hubby and I took a walk up to view the Glacier last week when we were in the Tekapo area. A great sight... I'll get a photo sorted

So is this an indication that the glacier is in fact growing and as a result of this growth, being forced to shed excess mass through calving ?
One would tend to assume that if the glaciers mass was shrinking and retreating through "global warming", that huge chunks wouldn't be expected to be breaking off ?

I'm not sure which it is, in the story about the warning it says that the face of the glacier lifted up off the lake floor (because of lots of rain filling the lake higher

I don't think this is one of the NZ glaciers that is growing, there are lots of others in the Southern Alps besides this one, although this is the biggest.
