I'd take some of that website with a large dose of salt.

This entire thread is offensive, hateful and frankly, in poor taste. Looking at the naked bodies of ancient Greeks is offensive to ALL AMERICANS save those who love pornography. I refuse to be a part of this any longer!

Just kidding. It's a fantastic thread and thanks for posting. Flagged and Starred. It's neat to peek into the colorful ancient past, all thanks to modern technological wizardry.

Thanks again.

Sorry OP, the statues that you are making us believe are Greek...are actually Roman statues. There is a very big difference in style and appearance; some temple where painted but the statues where mostly not. Imagine an advanced civilization like the Greeks that build architecture for 'eternity', wouldn't they have used paints (that already have been widely used in these times, also by Eqyptians) more durable pigments?? So from my knowledge and since I am also Greek the and Greek statues were NOT painted.

I must of been a wonderful site to see I can Imagine Egypt & Sumar was Colorful Long ago ! Especially the Pyramids as they had all there Original Smoothed Stones and a The Illuminating Pyramid top piece

You don't have to imagine it... the Pergamon Museum in (formerly) East Berlin houses a pretty impressive part of the Isthar Gate of Babylon. It's pretty damm cool seeing it in person, even though it's a reconstruction of what it would look like, it uses original pieces of the gate as well. .

That is pretty cool.

I hesitate to even admit this because it is a little embarrassing, but it never even occurred to me that those statues would have been painted.

I don't know about that..... Minoan stuff, mosaics and the like, were pretty colorful. It stands to reason that the mainland stuff would be similar.

Thanks for sharing.

I'm not going to lie, I never even knew they were painted. I thought they'd always been just white.

I agree with the mass that they look better unpainted, but still very cool.

false and misleading very reconstructionist. these are all renditions and have nothing to do with spectography.

Exactly what I was thinking. Half of those were CGI, and the rest were taken at differing angles than the originals.

But you have to understand when these things were made that they weren't necessarily into the the "natural" look of things. They probably wanted to impress everybody and most people who try to impress........over do it with colors and patterns, ect. Look at all the other civilizations around them... none of them were monochromatic with their art. The Greeks would have "amped it up" quite a few decibels I'm sure. Cept for them wacky Spartans.....they were too busy fighting.

That's exactly what I thought of when I saw this post. Was going to recommend it myself.

Not much else to add other than to say I was shocked and mildly disappointed by the gaudy colors the experts are suggesting were the norm. Eye-searing, to say the least.

just a footnote:

That statue isnt greek... its the roman Augusto di prima porta which is now in the vatican museum, representing augustus caesar. (from the 1st century I think...)

just setting things right.

Actually, mentioning hippies, it is known that Greek temple structures and colors came directly from India, where the hippi culture also came from.

More like Indian colours came from Greek. It was Alexander the Great that went there as a conqueror in Pakistan/north India and not the other way around.

Yea everything came from Africa.... 50,000 years ago. Roman culture is a direct export from Greece. Indeed as you can see they were Germaic and Celtic in origin, but they adopted the culture of the Greeks. And who did the Greeks get their culture from? Directly from the East.

In fact, most of the pre-Christian world religions were plays on each other.

en.wikipedia.org...

[edit on 21-8-2010 by Gorman91]

The Romans were patently not Germanic or Celtic in origin. They came from Anatolia about 3,000 years ago before the Turkish takeover of this area about 5-600 years ago. They were thus related to the Greeks and perhaps the Hittites, hence the cultural similarity.

Sad to say, but very true never-the-less, the Germanic and Celtic people were savage barbarians at these stages, with some being so primitive, they’d paint themselves blue all over.

The Romans waged a brutal war with the Celts of Gaul and Britain as well as the Germanic tribes.

BTW, this article says “Greek Art” but shows a statue of Augustus Caesar.

Actually the Romans were Celtic people that migrated south. The painting even shows a very Celtic colored man with red hair. Rome did not have a single origin. The City of Rome was founded by Celts who adopted Greek culture. However, Rome herself, in Italy, was mixed with many peoples. By the time of the emperors Italy had created its own unique race. Almost all Celtic traits were dead. Red hair found today in Italians comes from Vikings who occupied Sicily. Ironic. By the time the nation fell the people who founded it were nonexistent.

Hey thanks all for the good replies and history lessons. If you will re read the OP, I simply used that picture as an example of the technology, not as an example of GREEK statues, because it was my favorite from the pictures offered at link. But thanks for clearing that up, no harm done.

Hey TA, Thanks for posting this, very interesting stuff. Makes you wonder how colorful it must have been back then if everything was painted in these bright reds, blues, and all the other colors. Wild stuff.

Could you Kindly show me some sources please...
so i can verify what your talking about!
as you said in a previous thread that Native Americans are from
from Asia as your a believer of the Bering strait theory.. as you do not even realize that Eskimos Only Travel back and fourth thousand of years
and leave traces of Artifacts in Siberia

Setting the Record Straight About Native Languages: Linguistic Relationships
www.native-languages.org...

Then Explain to me the 7 types of races that can be found in DNA of what types of race you are or have within you as 3 of the 7 are Chinese ,Native American and Indian (INDIA) but white Caucasian you cant really tell ..
as it is label just European in the DNA testing ...

Only the way you can tell is the
BONE Structure of the white race but for Celtic it mostly considered Alpine & Nordic after the Viking Invasion

Bone Structure of Europe..
Nordic ,Mediterranean, Alpine

Nordic Race
en.wikipedia.org...
Mediterranean race
en.wikipedia.org...
Alpine race

Dinaric race

My Ideal of a Celt is a
Stocky, Broad Shoulder Barrel Chested with big calves

Ever heard of this Quote?
Herodotus, about half a century later, speaks of the Celts as dwelling "beyond the pillars of Hercules

Well as a few Historians claim Celts Originated from Spain & France and the!!! Basques People of NE Spain & NW of France in which there a Unique Group of People by themselves Alone (highest RH Negative Blood Type In the World) Many Historians think to believe the Basque People are part of the Seed of the Celtic Race..

Notes of the Basque People
www.bibliotecapleyades.net...

These star seed people are mostly of Celtic origin (Basques, Irish, English, Norsemen, Icelanders, Bretons, Spaniards and Portuguese) which, strangely enough, make up the largest percentage of RH-NEGATIVE blood types.

As i looked to find that Romans are Celts as i Failed to find your claims please link a source please... I did find ( a Mess load AKA.. Roman Invasion in my search ) as always the reversal of your claims as the Romans controlled Britain for almost 400 years till the Fall Of Rome ... as Britain now is the Celtic , Roman ,Germanic ,Nordic (Viking) Mix .... they may be some mixture Celts in Roman history tho but from being derived solely from the Celts I think Not .. Its just another missing piece of the White Race...

I think the White Race is the Survivors of Atlantis

or is it Pre Columbians ? MayanAztec Incas Etc...

but seriously if you want to Make a connection of Native Americans with the Old World (Europe Asian ) go study the Sami People (Laplanders) as they have a very Close Lifestyle of Plain Native American Nomadic Tribes (Especially the Tepees) to even Peruvian Style Clothing Now Thats a Twist isn't!!

Sami People
en.wikipedia.org...
Saami song
for a twist if you look away from this video and only hear the Song
you would thought you were hearing a Native American Song !

I have yet to see Ancient Celtic Art in the Beginning Roman Culture .

Fascinating.

I just always assumed they were that way originally, kind of like how everyone in the 20s and 30s lived in black and white!

I think you are probably correct- the color renditions have fixed legs and bows/arrows that the originals don't. It is historical fact that the statues and architecture were painted this manner. We learned about it in my college classes.

Wow really fascinating! UV is becoming more and more usefull
What paint did they use? Is that allready explained?
Or better said what material to get those bright colours?
I mean putting blueberries on a statue would not last very long I suppose..
