What's most interesting is that China could fight the U.S. under two situations: Taiwan or North Korea.

The scariest thing is, if North Korea goes to war with the U.S. and South Korea, China will probably see that as a green light for invasion of Taiwan. Even with as many forces arrayed in Asia, it's doubtful the U.S. can conduct an offensive campaign against North Korea while defending Taiwan.

Now, if China invades Taiwan, North Korea will see that as a green light to invade South Korea.

So prevention of a war with China depends solely on how well North Korea is handled. Take North Korea out of the picture, a defensive campaign against China becomes a lot easier.

sweatmonicaIdo,

Totaling all US military, I don't think the US could invade China, "with conventional weapons". The shear number of human bodies that could come row after row... Even if they were all armed with pitch fork, you run out of ammo at some point and retreat or die-it's just a numbers game. Y believe China has a standing army of 2.5 million men. After that what about one hundred million men/wemon/children heading for you-and thats just the first wave.
Lets not forget China has nuclear weapons and delivery systems capable of getting them here. No, they don't have near as many, but, enough to devestate the US major cities.
While we sort of are on the issue, what about those 7 battle groups out to sea going noone knows where.

The question is, would the U.S. go as far as INVADING China? I mean, I can see the U.S. launching airstrikes or at the most destroying Chinese forces that come near Taiwan or South Korea, but I just can't see any U.S. president being as insane as to invade China. That just seems inconcievable.

Without military forces already stretched thin in Iraq and the rest of the world, and the U.S. military being the size it is...

1st thing I want to get out of the way. The US being stretched thin thing. I know it seems that way, but we didn't send to many people to Iraq in the first place. If we sent a true invasion/occupying force, it wouldn't seem as it does now that we're being stretched thin. But we didn't so it does.

Alright as far as China vs. US.
I seriously doubt the U.S. would ever invade China. They have 2.5 mil people in their army, we only have a 1.4 million people. If we had a draft or something then we could even the score as far as people, but that would be a mess. Our weapons are more advanced so we wouldn't need to invade. I'm sure we'd have thousands of people in Taiwan however protecting them and/or driving out the Chinese. The death count between a US vs. China war would be incredible. China is the only country that has the means to put up a sizable fight on U.S. soil. The Russians....I quess they also have the means, but they I'm sure would use nukes first (poor Alaska.)

I think given the effectiveness of guerilla resistance tactics in Iraq and other places, I don't think any organized army of any size would be able to take a fight to US soil and win. I mean can you imagine what firepower and numbers the resistance would have? 270 million people all armed? There's probably more tanks, armour and fighter jets in private US hands than most countries military!

Whatever the economic outlook, I think American soil is kinda safe

Oh I know. I wasn't saying they'd win on U.S. Soil. Just that they'd put up a good fight. For like a day or two...
The last thing you want to do is unite Americans. That will unite them. A united America would be and is an unstoppable force. You know how we love our guns

Why would they fight the Chinese? They'd more than likely join them.

Yes that is more probable because Russia and China signed a Russia-Sino Alliance in 1996.

So, unless the U.S. gets the biggest coalition ever assembled, can it and will it invade China?

Even if the rest of the world is peaceful, the U.S. alone doesn't seem to be able to invade a country like China.

USA can kick any countires a**...including China's.

Hate to say it but China would win. They've had plenty of time to prepare.

China would not win because China's main source for food is America. A war with us would either end trade or (if they invade) end food production.

Either way China would starve.

I find it unlikely that China depends that much on us for food. With all the jobs we have shipped over there I think our economy depends on them. If ties are cut off that will cause serious problems for American business. All the stuff gets manufactured in China and they'd have nothing to sell.

Indy...why don't you view my thread about Economic inter-dependence titled something like, "Understanding the World Economy and Job Loss".

You'll see that China is dependent upon the US for food, we are dependent upon China for comforts.

If we went to war, we could kick China's behind, let them starve, and all we'd do is have to cut down on the number of shoes we buy.

We produce their farming equipment, their machine products (we as in the west), and everyting that supports the growth of their economy, in return they produce cheap trinkets and service goods and such.

They have an industrial program, but nothing like America could set-up in a month.

And nothing like the West has.

I hope the U.S. isn't ever planning to conduct offensive combat operations with China (invasion).

What you all have said makes a lot of sense and it seems like suicide to invade China. We would get slaughtered.

The thing is, will the U.S. just stand still after repulsing a Chinese invasion of Taiwan? The U.S. has always pummelled a weaker nation, but from what you all say, we won't pummel someone who can stand up to us.

How would we get slaughtered in an invasion against China?

China still has not mastered the art of "pin and kill" as we have. We'd run circles around them as we rain missiles from above, capable of zooming in on a platoon to hit their leader.

I mean really, China has efforts to modernize, but if we invaded today our entire Navy could support an invasion of about 200,000 combat personel and full logistical support add in the 140,000 Marines and we could position our Air Forces in Japan and just pound the Chinese into the dust.

The only problem would be their air force at this point, which would severly hamper our Naval and Air actions.

Uhh ... no.

There is a Sino-Russian pact, it's not a solid pact, and the memories of HATE that caused the Sino-Soviet Pact would cause more likely a Chinese-American invasion of Russia than a Chinese-American war.

This thread is so stupid because it's primary premise is that America would fight China. The reality is that China is so dependent upon the US, they will never fight us any time soon. Russia is the only nation diametrically opposed to America and aside from Nukes it's pretty worthless.

China's currency is pinned to the Dollar, attacking us would destroy the value of their currency. They'd be unable to trade and thus unable to conduct war.
