God knows we have plenty of pending catastrophe threads here on ATS. Between imminent WWIII, super volcanos, 2012, global warming, Nibiru, etc. seem like there's no shortage of things to fret over. But what if the biggest threat, the most legitimate peril is right in front of us but we've become so embroiled in these other discussions that we're essentially missing the boat?

Sun watchers know that we seem to be emerging from an extended and particularly quiet Solar Minimum with over 800 spotless days. Just recently the sun has started Solar cycle 24. There is a direct correlation between sunspot activity and global climate and we may have a problem on our hands.

See here.

Take your time reading the article. Lots of data, lots of citations.

Wow a very awesome article.

Something very interesting I noticed. If you look at that graph. I want to say that it relates very closely to the global warming trend we've been having.

And if you look at that low around 1500-1600 it corresponds to the little ice age.

Interesting.

Exactly. My point in bringing it up. There's been increasing discussion about global warming being mostly caused by solar activity and that bears out in the data provides. Going back centuries. This could be very bad news if the scenarios presented play-out.

Scientists now speculate that the sun is causing the polar ice caps on Mars to melt. kinda interesting. maybe Mars is being prepared for our next home?

We don't know if this will end in bad news. The truth is we have only observed the sun for so little time to make that decision.

Even if it does flare up and the worst happens, we will endure better than our past lives. The knowledge that has been passed down will help us survive even if we are on the brink of annihilation.

We are being tortured with fear, we are being sold out of fear. In 30-40 years we will still be on the Earth. We could have been hit with the worst solar storms, comets, and super volcanoes and still survive. If we did it in the past with less knowledge and technology, we could endure the future.

I have really stopped listening to this Sun fear mongering, every week something new, There is ABSolutely nothing we can do about what the sun does....so no point in worrying

christian or not, you should read revelations.

essentially a part says something to the effect of "the power of the sun is increased so as to scorch the earth and all that lives upon it" causing famine etc....

look at Russia, seeing record heat thats killing people, not a few years back it was france, not to mention all over the united states we are seeing high temps not just for a few days but for going on 2 months!

Yes, but in the past humans didn't rely on technology as much. Do you know how to purify water? How about where to find food in the wild wants grocery stores become empty? If you got hurt, would you know how to treat it without the ability to ask a doctor or look it up? Can you build a fire without matches?

As much as technology has improved the quality of hours lives, it has made us stupid in regard to survival. While I don't doubt humans would survive and adapt, I think it would be worse for us now than it has been in the past.

Please read this thread ?

It reveals climate warming on other solar system inhabitants and that the solar system will very soon or maybe even is travelijng through a hot gas cloud.

Climate Change Occurring in Every Planet in Solar System

A thread I've made on the dust cloud. : Could the galactic dust cloud be the same as the Photon belt ? (True science meets fringe theories )

Setting aside a history of debunking the concept of man-made climate change...and perhaps some work on how to hide from asteroids...I can't seem to find anything in Google Scholar that points to actual peer-reviewed scholarly work. Hmmm...just because you're a nuclear physicist with a past career in the military doesn't necessarily say you've got it right.

But the Earth's been around for 4.5 billion years. Why would we die now?

Legitimate I think it's just another worry that does not exist so much. Whatever happens happens. Sure we should keep looking just in case, but realize that it's highly unlikely anything will happen.

No one says we ARE going to die. The article maps out Solar cycles going back thousands of years (using ice core samples)) and observational data for the more recent cycles. Either the sun cycle data correlates with climate changes or it doesn't. If you read the article it's hard to believe you wouldn't concur. The author is simply saying 'when the sun cycle acted like this in the past, this is what happened'. I strongly urge you to read the article before forming an opinion. It's not all doom and gloom but it sure ain't birthday cake and skittles either.

We learn to adapt far quicker than other species. Purify water? It is a simple technique that doesn't need much teaching. Hunting for food would be the only hard part, but I could survive of plants for sometime.

2/3 may die because of a huge catastrophe but the survivors will endure. Not everyone is relying on technology to live their lives. We still have hunters, fishermen, builders, and etc.

I am not saying it wouldn't be terrible, just no need to live in fear.

Thank you ! very good post ! Humans please take heed ! Many of us purchase exspensive insurance for all sorts of things ie: house, contents, life, car, valuables, travel etc insurances... Prepare folks ! have some supplies (insurance) when we do get a massive solar flare en.wikipedia.org...
Kiss life as we know away... Infrastructure wont be repaired for along time if at all.. Society will collapse ! the people that "protect us will be busy protecting them selves and the people that fix the grid certainly wont be on the streets fixing transformers... System failure ! Society failure !

That's wrong.

Such an assertion was put forward by Habibullo Abdussamatov who is known to have ridiculous stances on global warming (for instance, his ridiculous claims that CO2 has no effect on climate/temperature) as well as links to right-wing/industry think-tanks.

IMO, the article linked is fear-mongering and follows the same logic of human caused Global Warming.

You'll notice within the article that it states that we only have empirical data from solar cycles for the past 250 years - that is we have only observed the sun within any cycle for 250 years. How one can then go and graph something stating that the worse cycle was 12,000 yrs ago and we may be heading into one now is is flawed science.

This graph does not rely on the scientific method and is useless in predicting how bad any Solar Maximum may be.

That's not to say the article is spot on in describing Solar Cycle's - it is... But when it comes to predicting how bad this current cycle is going to be, well that just not based on anything but conjecture.

To the op - don't worry when the end of the world comes and your hiding under your bed - that sound outside will be me laughing as I charge through your neighborhood in a monster truck drunk off my ass with 12 strippers in the back.

Nothing left to do but enjoy it.
