So we clearly see who the has the best navy now...The US.
2nd and below is still tough to call,
the british have their shrinking fleets, Russia has their rusting fleets
,
How about the rest of the world? France, China, Singapore?

The U.S. Navy is BY FAR the best Navy in the entire world. 16 highly trained and armed Carrier battle groups, right there, that's all you need. Britain is a second with having probably the best training in the world.

Russia's Navy is a shadow of it's former self, even their once mighty submarine fleet is rusting and sinking (Kursk)

The Russians supposedly had incredibly fast submarines and super-cavitating torpedoes that would have been impossible to outmanuever, which gave them the edge in a straight-up fight.

EDIT: and if they aren't careful to maintain their submarines they will one day find themselves completely powerless to operate anywhere in the pacific or Indian oceans, courtesy of China (or even a re-born Japanese navy, if they were to ever attempt empire again).

Super-cavitating "fishs" need to be aimed precisely because they go in straight line. Also it makes so much noise that every ASW platform in area would awake to that. (and if you get bearing of its lauch from couple of them...)

I would keep China as "most promising" potentially hostile country.
They have lot of people, big land forces and need resources.
I think they might even look for Siberia in some day.

TASM and TLAM have only about 450 kg warhead which doesn't make so big hole to rock. (at least not big enough to get carrier over that)

I just happen to run into one of National Geographic issue that has a quikc blurb on the largest Navies.

In the May 2004 issue, it has a chart on the number of personel in the Navy.

The US has about 375,000. China about 250,000. Russia about 160,000. Thailand about 75,000. South Korea about 55,000. India about 52,000. and Turkey about 50,000.

The Brits and rest of Europe are not listed for some reason.
