In the news all week we have learned about 10 innocent aid workers being slaughtered by the Taliban. Some had been going there and helping victims for a decade before the current conflict even started.

"When we leave" what happens then? If we don't nation build and install a stable government what happens? Thousands of innocents slaughtered? A hundred thousand? More?

I've never forgotten the dark tragedy that followed our exit from Vietnam in the middle of political firestorm. Millions were slaughtered. It was barely talked about as those who wanted out celebrated and hordes of people died as a direct result of the way we withdrew. The media ignored it because they got what they wanted and the people who died did not seem to matter to them or those who made the decisions.

Will the same happen here, or do we have a responsibility to finish what we started to prevent it?

I see a lot of similarities here but very little discussion of what happens when we leave.

Think about it and I'd love to know peoples thoughts on this.

The U.S. has already commited troops to Afghanistan until 2015. We will never leave Afghanistan. The Taliban and Al-Qeada will continue to fight until they are all dead. The U.S. occupation of Afghanistan is only breeding more insurgents. More and more coalition troops will die as the war continues. The U.S. is just going to stay in Afghanistan and continue "nation building".

They will continue to fight forever whether we leave or stay. I mean really the only way the fighting would stp is if we bombed those countries and killed everyone in them... and the another place would start fighting. its a vicious cycle, no matter what we do or where we are there will always be conflict, its human nature to fight for what they want.

Keep dying and killing, I don't care, as long as you learned your lesson.

Wait, wait, did you learn your lesson after Vietnam?

Let us not forget the recent discovery of minerals (trillions or billions worth, I can't remember which).

We won't leave Afghanistan, ever.

Dear Blaine91555

When the US leaves Afghanistan the Taliban will rule again, I give it a month.

If you want to prevent this then the US forces must be prepared to stay for at least the next two hundred years.

That indeed may be optimistic

Afghanistan is for the most part still tribal in nature, a very large part of the reason it has not been conquered for centuries. As for nation building, securing a stable government etc etc Sorry but it seems as if you are trying to imply it is morally justifiable to be their in the first place, the forces in Afghanistan right now are foreign invaders and aggressors and have no moral high ground whatsoever. They should be treated as any military invading and occupying your country should, which is expelled through force. Not nice to say when you have friends over there and wish no harm to come to them, but it's simply the truth. The war is not moral or righteous, it is as usual all for the $$$.

To the OP.

The above qoute already sadly answered your question.

If you hope to learn the lesson from Vietnam's and Cambodia's tragedy when US left, do realize that it was not entirely the fault of US or it had failed Cambodia.

It was Cambodia's vacilating leadership that attempted to play ALL sides over and over again that led to the demise and terrible tragedy of its own people, and the refusal of the docile buddhist Cambodian masses to rise against their oppressors.

It was their choice and free will.

Only the corrupt and power hungry rose up using an unstoppable belief/ideology of those times, as proven by the failure of US in Vietnam, and turn the country into a massive burial ground, an unspeakable horror even till today, that made the Nazis looked like civilised choir boys with their treatment of the jews.

With or without US, the shias will continue to fight with the Sunnis. The foolish military industrial complex were the pawns when they thought they had been the kingpins, stupidly believing might is right. The chess game was invented by the easterners not for nothing, and otello too came from eastern civilisation.

There is nothing worth achieving now in Afghanistan. The mineral wealth belongs to the soveriegn people of Afghanistan. US too has its own wealth to be contented with.

But if it seeks to be avarice, they will only condemn hundreds of thousands precious young american lives, and would need to kill or cower millions of afghanis for that to happen, and it aint gonna happen as recorded by centuries of afghanis preserverance against colonizers..they aren't docile city dwelling iraqis..

May the US leadership wakes up and spare more innocent Alliance young lives there... ..

Might had failed there, and its time for other options to be used to help our innocent brothers and sisters there, which should had been done first. It's been 10 long years of death and destruction, which was the only thing that was achieved, as in Vietnam...

Well said! When will the U.S. Government wake up? Well... they havent really went to sleep yet, and until they sleep they cannot dream, and its only when they dream that they can achieve... too bad that if they were t dream it would be about world domination... I dont think anyone wants that... So whether or not they are awake or asleep, its still going to end bad. History will repeat itself, it always does!

Human beings, soft skinned and fragile, were NEVER meant to be warriors or created just for wars alone.

Look at our other species and compare- the crocs, the elephants and the rhinos. These are invincible animals and built for fighting. We humans were created with brains and intelligence, but only to maintain the ecological balance of planet Earth and other worlds we will soon embark on.

Yet we retarded our own evolution by using such intelligence to kill each other, brothers against brothers out of greed and power with corrupted ideologies...
