What lesson? That a company can ignore safety violations because asking forgiveness is easier than permission?

Have Americans stopped consuming oil because of this? Now THAT would be a lesson learned.

BP has an army of Madison Ave. advertising companies designing letters, TV advertisements, newspaper ads, people to coach the www. spin miesters; like the paid shills on ATS, to paint a favorable picture of the oil company and to run damage control. A company as big as BP subcontracts out much of it publicity/advertising as well as having an inhouse department to paint a favorable image of the corporation. Its SOP in the corporate world to maximize image to keep the stocks up so the investors can live large. Ultimately the American taxpayers will end up paying for the clean up. BP will continue to get taxbreaks and subsidies just like in the past.

Large companies like BP don't view their customers as people. You are what is known as Market shares. Didn't anyone ever watch Lou Dobbs.

Topic....mamabeth, If you want to send a strong statemant to BP; send them your credit card back to them in small pieces. But perhaps the spill dosen't matter to you. I just got a local oil co. card and that where I'm gonna get my gas from now on. I'd rather contribute to the local economy and pay a few cents more. To hell with BP, Shell, Exxon etc.

Cute. Although I'm not sure how you come to that conclusion, unless you are stuck in the false-dichotomy that can only assume that someone critical of the right is a member of the left.

I guess I am just naive to think that ATS wouldnt be populated by more of the old-guard left/right false choice.

Dear BP,

I hope you have learned that pushing for short term gain at the expense of health and safety is not profitable or commendable. I hope this, but I suspect not. I suspect that you will get off without having to pay the true cost of the damage you caused with your reckless rush to profits, just like many corporations your size do.

Oh sure, there will be much hoopla about damage awards, and funds being set up, but we both know that years from now, when the public has moved on to the next media storm, you will win some appeal and have those damages reduced to something that is a mockery of justice.

So I am also hoping that you as people somehow learn that money is not everything. I hope that you learn, somehow, through circumstances in your own lives, that people and other living things, and the Earth itself, matter more than your stupid bonuses, or salaries, or houses in Spain.

I hope this because it would effect more lasting change than any monetary award against a nameless, faceless, non living entity like a corporation ever will. So forgive me for hoping you learn this lesson. Because it often comes in a horribly painful form, often by losing people you love very, very much, and realizing that no amount of money can replace them. Maybe you will be lucky and you will learn it some other way.

Dear BP;

I'm sure you knew what you were doing, and you know that ultimately, no one near the top level of your organization will ever have to pay any significant penalties. Tony Hawyard resigned with a million dollar pension, and the taxpayers will end up footing the bill for the long-term cleanup efforts, as you write off and work around any payments you may ultimately be forced to make.

I feel like measures should have been taken before the fact to prevent something like this from happening. Yes it was an accident but why weren't there plans for fixing the problem before it even happened? Preventative measures should have been taken or at least backup plans should have been talked about in case something like this ever happened.

There's a project starting to raise awareness of the BP oil spill and its one we can call contribute to. This video is a trailer for the film but I guess what they are trying to do is to get locals who are effected by the spill to contribute their own footage and to conduct their own interviews and send them in to be involved in a film about what happened. It looks like it could be a great way to get involved.

I can't post what I would say here.....it would be removed LOL!
