Super typhoon headed for Japan!

Supertyphoon Dianmu, churning north-northwestward through the Philippine Sea, is packing sustained winds of 180 mph.

There seems to be a lot of strange weather phenomena lately.

With 180mph sustained winds where does this storm rank all time?

hurricanes and typhoons are not my forte when it comes to weather, but this sucker looks huge. the storm system itself looks almost as large as japan!

What a cool image. Look at those storms lined up in both hemispheres. Because of the lack of land the ones in the southern hemisphere stand out more. Very nice. I'd like to see a close up image of that typhoon. It must be impressive.

I wonder if it will be heading for Hong Kong? Cos Japan is near Hong Kong.

Thank goodness I don't live on Kyushu anymore. I've been through my fair share of typhoons while living in Japan, but this one takes the cake. That is definitely one powerful storm system.

According to this story the strongest storm ever recorded had wind speeds of 213mph (sustained) in 1961 in a typhoon but these were just estimates and apparently there is a claim that speeds were over estimated for Typhoons from the 1940's to 1960's. Seems the accepted record is 190mhh. So this storm is about one of the strongest in history.

Wow! I suppose super storms come in cycles just like everything. :-D

The storm has weakened but is still headed for Japan, and is still considered a super typhoon.
