Should it be required by law that children be taught how to swim in school?

Yes learning to swim and being able to swim is a life skill full stop.

It should be taught along with other life skills like writing, math's etc. To me I feel that it is an essential skill.

Why exactly should people learn to swim? we are land animals after all, if your not doing it as a sport or to keep fit what is the point exactly?

because we use boats, because we as a race enjoy being near to water.
Again being able to swim is as important to me as being able to drive...

What next? Are we going to mandate having the government teach kids to eat, wipe their ass, ride a bike, row a boat, count cards in black jack, fish so they can eat, farm, breathe, etc...

If your kid cannot swim by a certain age then that means their parents arent doing their job. Society shouldnt have to pay for pools and swim lessons, because some people happened to be born to utter morons.

Essential "life" skills and "education" taught in school are completely different things. Its like dropping everything into the laps of the schools instead of the parents seeing to it that their children learn various life skills such as swimming, driving, etc.

The education system is a mess in a lot of locations as it is, their focus should remain on teaching reading, writing, math, history, science, etc. and leave the rest to parents and organizations that are designed and focused on sports and recreation.

If a parent knows how to swim they can teach their child to swim. If they don't know how to swim they can see that they get swimming lessons.
