Last week Dick Cheney underwent a procedure to install a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) which runs on a battery and pumps blood through the body. This device is worn on the outside of the body. The procedure was done last week and revealed to the public on July 14, 2010.

The LVAD flows continiously and does not pulse therefore, Mr. Cheney no longer has a pulse. If you were to check his wrist you would feel - nothing. The valves of the heart normally open and close giving us the familiar thump-thump. Mr. Cheneys valves are now closed.

The device is expected to last 3 to 5 years but can be replaced at any time.

Darth Cheney?

Battery-powered Cheney! Ahhhhh!

Is it safe to call him an android, as he is being kept alive by artificial means? Creepy.

I knew it! I just knew it! Cheney is the founder of The Borg!

He no longer has a working heart. That's effectively the same as having no heart. Some of us knew this all along.
Now if he can only get a brain, he could truly become an even more awesome villain. One worthy of being in Star Trek movies.

I was surprised enough when they said his heart was giving him trouble.
He has a heart?

A man is doing all he can do to stay alive. A family doesn't know if their father/husband could die at a single moment.

And you guys are laughing.

I don't much care for the man myself. He helped start the war in Iraq where I have lost many friends. But I will be damned if I laugh at someone who is dying a slow, inevitable death.

I hope you and your families suffer the way his family suffers.

What will it take to bring down The Cheney? He really is a cyborg now, I'm just waiting for him to pull his hunting rifle out of his leg, circa RoboCheney.

I guess you have never laughed at anyone before, because you just described the entire human race.

Interesting that you don't think it is ok to laugh at someone but wishing suffering on others is completely acceptable.

"Darth Cheny"

That was hilarious. Maybe he doesn't want to die because he is afraid of what awaits him?

What goes around comes around, karma is a bitch, karma will bite you in the ass..........the list of sayings goes on and on and on. Take your pick and apply it here.

I promise I won't be laughing when it happens though. I do laugh at people, but I don't find humor in failing health or families suffering a illness in the family.

Also don't be a smart ass.

Unfortunately for the real-suffer's who have always been the working class of society would in most circumstances be put on such a long waiting list from the NHS for this technology and if you wanted to have it within a week or two, i'd imagine it would be sold a such a high price that none of us! would be able to afford such a device.

Its annoying and frustrating when the Powers To Be get everything handed over to them on a plate without a struggle!

Now there's the real story right there. Cheney got this on the spot, no waiting list. This device usually keeps one going until a transplant heart can be located but apparently, Cheney is just going to keep the device.

A true example of the Elitism that most certainly exists.

You would prefer I was a dumb ass?

Seriously though, you don't see any humor in the fact that he doesn't have a pulse and has no need for his heart.

As someone pointed out above...is he an android or some other type of being now?

Lighten up, life really isn't that serious.

I see the humor alright.

Its hilarious that he has to go to such extreme measures to stay alive. Its hysterical that his family has had to suffer so many times and each time they get closer and closer to losing a husband and father.

Jesus Christ my sides are splitting I'm laughing so hard.

And then you go on to speak about Karma.

What do you think happens when you project negativity in response to something you don't like? Love and light in return? Honestly.

Well then I must be one of the Elite.

I have had a diagnosis of Viral Cardiomyopathy since 2001. Regardless of my underlying opinion about the Pharmaceutical Industry (it's evil) and the US Medical Business (it's pure capitalism gone insane) I know that the medications I have been on for 9 years now have saved my life. Now, this February my heart failure progressed to a point where my EF is 15-20% (normal is 60% plus) and I was referred to a specialist transplant/heart failure team. As of May, I now have a Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Defibrillator installed. I had the procedure within a week of deciding to have it done.

Now, the LVADs... It is indeed true that the first of these devices were not thought to be robust enough for long term use, and were indeed used as a "bridge" between death (for want of a better way of putting it) and a transplant. Recently, new models of LVADs have far better long term prospects and there are a growing number of people who are living active lives with such a device.

If it comes to the point that I need one, I will get one as soon as I need it. No waiting. Gee it's great to be one of the Elite!

If Cheney's doctors decide he needs a transplant on a Monday and he gets it on a Tuesday - THEN there will be an issue to address! In the meantime, however much anyone dislikes the man, surely we can be happy for his family that his life has been extended for a while by this modern marvel.

Just my story for what its worth.
