Ship Buried in 18th Century Unearthed at WTC Site

NEW YORK (AP) -- Workers excavating at the World Trade Center site have unearthed the 32-foot-long hull of a ship likely buried in the 18th century.

The vessel probably was used along with other debris to fill in land to extend lower Manhattan into the Hudson River, archeologists said.

Archeologists Molly McDonald and A. Michael Pappalardo were at the site of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on Tuesday morning when workers uncovered the artifacts.

''We noticed curved timbers that a backhoe brought up,'' McDonald said Wednesday. ''We quickly found the rib of a vessel and continued to clear it away and expose the hull over the last two days.''

The two archeologists work for AKRF, a firm hired to document artifacts discovered at the site. They called Tuesday's find significant but said more study was needed to determine the age of the ship.

''We're going to send timber samples to a laboratory to do endocrinology that will help us to get a sense of when the boat was constructed,'' said McDonald, who added that a boat specialist was going to the site Thursday to take a look at the ship.

The workers and archeologists also found a 100-pound anchor in the same area on Wednesday, but they're not sure if it belongs to the ship.

The archeologists are racing to record and analyze the vessel before the delicate wood, now exposed to air, begins to deteriorate.

''I kept thinking of how closely it came to being destroyed,'' Pappalardo said.

What are the odds? Wonder what else could be under that area. Thats around 300 Years that the ship has been buried. I wonder how deep under the site it was found.

Not only what are the odds, but since it want really damaged, imagine that that's what they were looking for?

Sorry, but I happen to think that this was possibly a Stargate of some sort. If it were a demolition, yet this wasn't harmed, how is that possible? How far do they have to dig anyway, obviously it wasn't seen when they built the place, what are the odds they want to rebuild, but are digging so deep, that now its found? Weirder things have happened.

My 2 cents

Peace to you...

Interesting theory. Anythings possible. It's easy to create a conspiracy from this, just by saying that they knew a stargate was there, and that the towers were taken down to uncover it.

But I think not. You never know though, like I said anything is possible.

Yes I knew that theory was kind of out there, but as I said crazier things have happened. We all know that there is something as of late that cannot be explained concerning the WTC/9-11.

I guess we will just have to wait and see the results of the ship, and lets see what they have to say. Ill be looking out for this one, thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Peace to you...

A conspiracy within a conspiracy? The ship must have been buried extremely deep. I'm guessing that it was several feet under the foundation of the building.Which is mind goggling considering how it was able to withstand all the weight of the building and then the collapse of it.

Very interesting, I'll see how this unfolds.

Awesome find! My first thought is regarding this statement. "The vessel probably was used along with other debris to fill in land to extend lower Manhattan into the Hudson River". Are they saying the 32' long vessel was within the debris and unnoticed or that the vessel was purposely placed with other debris? I'm unfamiliar with precisely how land filling is achieved but that would be a large bucket to scoop a 32' vessel without noticing it within the debris. I also can't really see workers deliberately placing a familiar shaped wooden structure within the fill. Maybe I'm just tired and am missing the obvious but I'm putting it out there anyway.

In response to NoRegretsEver, that's a heck of a theory but anything is truly possible. Chances are we won't hear the outcome, the results will be inclusive or any of a number of other reasons will prevent the truth from prevailing. If your theory was actually true it would only be hidden along with the other pieces of forbidden archeology.

What I am truly happy about is even though these things are brought to our attention, that we weigh all the options available to us to make an informed decision, even if its outlandish.

Though I have my own thoughts concerning some of the places that have been desecrated, and there possible meanings are not the norm, I know that whatever the reason for any of the atrocities will soon come to light, we deserve that.

Peace to you...

Cool, will this make the new building get put up any faster?
It will still be open in 2005 right?

I love the stargate theory.

its just so sci/fi

I cant wait till this ships age is found out. When vikings died they would be given boat burials, it would be unreal if this turned out to be one of those, proving that vikings reached Americas shores before anyone knew.

Very cool find.

But a stargate? Come on...
Let's get real here. Whenever a demo team digs ground, any obtrusive objects are examined before the dig continues. It's as simple as that. This is how they find old native american burial grounds and the such.
They strike something hard, it gets examined.
I guarantee thats the case here.
They
found the rib of a boat hull and investigated.

[facepalm] A stargate?
Not everything is a conspiracy.

A viking ship burial sounds more conclusive, although I imagine that the fill was composed of old wrecked ship parts.
Just like land fills today. Filled with anything.

i wonder if the boat was deliberately scuttled to help create landfill in the old part of the hudson river.

it would seem that some 50-plus feet below ground level, the boat was just a sunken vessel back in the 1790s...
only later, as the trash, junk, backfill was constantly added to the Manhatten Island landmass did the sunken or scuttled ship get buried in amonst the fill dirt (quite by accident not intention)

I want pics! Where are the photos of this thing?

Odd thought that just occured to me. Egyptians burried ships next to the pyramids. It's been well established that the masons use Egyptian symbols and borrow heavily from ancient Egyptian culture. The twin towers have been associated with the pillars Boaz and Jachin and have other masonic connections.

It looks like they think the boat was put there deliberately so is it possible that it was burried there as some sort of masonic /egyptian ritual or for some religious purpose?

Wow this is very interesting. I was just about to post this same thing.

Now, we don't know exactly how 'anceint' this vessel is do we. It could be from the 17/1800's, or ir could date a lot further back than that.

Lets say for the sake of it this ship is Viking, or it could be American Indian or created by another civilisation entirely. The sad fact is, we don't know, we'll never know unless info is leaked from those with access to data concerning it.

If it were to be Viking, then that would change history forever. It would mean that the Vikings discovered America, long before Christopher Columbus. I do not believe Columbus was the first outsider to land in America. A land mass so big would have been easy for any wayfaring sailor to stumble upon.

Onto conspiracy theories, perhaps this ship is Mayan? One Mayan prophacy stated this: Great Birds will come from the sky and end a great city to the north at 9/11/01.

Perhaps they actualy visited this site? Hundreds of years ago, and drew the prophecy from this voyage. New York wouldn't have been such an impossible voyage for them to have made, by land or by sea, or both.

I can't find any images online as to what Mayan sea vessels might have looked like, if anyone can find one, please post it!

Incredible discovery - even more incredible is the location at which it was discovered. Not really all that far down when you think about it. My first thought was, why it was not discovered earlier when getting ready to erect the towers - or even shortly after the Twin Tower tragedy. There is a pic on Yahoo news (sorry I don't know how to link correctly yet). I wonder how it will be preserved now that it has been uncovered?

After thought - wonder what is under the ship?

The idea that the boat was deliberately sunk as landfill is the theory I've heard from most archeologists on the wire-services today. The site is also south of the original World Trade Center building's foundation tubs which is why they say it was not found when the original buildings were built.

It's still an amazing find, but it could have been excavated with the old WTC intact, if anyone had known it was there. Currently the belief is that the ship was built some time in the 1700s but it was sunk for fill in the early-1800s where there are very scant records.

It probably sank and laid undisturbed for many years. Then when they extended the land mass... it just became buried and long forgotten. Cities around the world are rebuilt many times over previous ruins... Jerusalem being a prime example. Underwater archeological excavations just aren't the norm for New York City.
